In his latest effort, Pearlman (The Bad Guys Won!) tells the story of how the Dallas Cowboys went from being a league doormat to a Super Bowl–winning machine. It's the cast of characters that makes this story a page-turner, starting with controlling owner Jerry Jones; all-business coach Jimmy Johnson, who would cut a player without blinking; and star players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders. Pearlman explores the many other people who bought into the philosophy that if you were going to be a Dallas Cowboy... you needed to live the life—and that meant, in the early '90s, plenty of infidelity, cocaine, nightly trips to gentleman's clubs and hangovers at practice. Pearlman interviewed nearly 150 members of the Cowboys organization for the book, but much of the terrific detail comes from such tangential folks as journalists, players' wives and staff at the local Cowboys restaurant. The anecdotes range from uplifting (the heartwarming story of quarterback Troy Aikman granting a wish to a dying boy) to raunchy (defensive end Chris Haley, while playing for the 49ers, often masturbated in the locker room). When the first chapter of a non-fiction football book starts off with future Hall Of Fame receiver Michael Irvin stabbing a teammate in the neck with a scissors... and blood is shooting all over the room... and the intensity of the lurid details... on and off the field... regarding the famed "dynastic" Dallas Cowboys of the 1990's... never lets up for the next three-hundred-fifty-eight pages... you know you've got a great book in your hands. Any true football fan, regardless of what team you root for will want to read this book. There are so many riveting... outlandish... insider... stories... that you will constantly want to stop reading for a moment or two... just to call one of your buddies to tell him what you just read!

This book has it all. From the "humble" beginnings (as far as wins and losses that is... nothing about any of the key individuals in this story could ever be considered humble!) concerning the 1989 Cowboys who had a one-win fifteen-loss season... to the three-time Super Bowl Champions. The author smoothly gives you detailed background information on everyone from owner Jerry Jones to coach Jimmy Johnson to Troy Aikman/Emmitt Smith/Michael Irvin/Nate Newton/Charles Haley/Deion Sanders... and every Cowboy large... small... or in between... who effected the team on or off the field... good or bad. From drug busts, that included Michael Irvin and teammate Alfredo Roberts being caught with 10.3 grams of cocaine, more than an ounce of marijuana, assorted drug paraphernalia and sex toys... and oh yea... two strippers... to shocking exposes regarding eventual FIVE-TIME-SUPER-BOWL-CHAMPION Charles Haley who would expose himself... and "pleasure-himself"... in front of teammates in the locker room... training room... and meeting rooms... to famous quotes from players, that truly thought they were above the law, are provided... such as when three-hundred-sixty pound Nate Newton said: "WE'VE GOT A LITTLE PLACE OVER HERE WHERE WE'RE RUNNING SOME WHORES IN AND OUT, TRYING TO BE RESPONSIBLE, AND WE'RE CRITICIZED FOR THAT, TOO."

Did you know that when former Cowboy owner Bum Bright sold the team to Jerry Jones... that one of the conditions of the sale was that Jones had to fire Tom Landry? Landry was probably the most popular man in Texas, but Bright couldn't stand him. How did the Cowboys code of ethics compare to other big name NFL teams? Barbara Mertz is a New York Times bestselling author who writes the popular Amelia Peabody mystery series under the pen name Elizabeth Peters and romantic suspense novels as Barbara Michaels. She was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Loved it. This book is actually a textbook, but it's the most interesting textbook I've ever read. It really gives you a "feel" for daily life in ancient Egypt.

A book to love on many levels of interest

Barbara Mertz is also the real name of writers Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels. She has written 37 books in the popular Amelia Peabody series (Amelia is a Victorian Egyptologist and archaeologist) and 29 suspense books as Michaels. Mertz received her doctorate in Egyptology in 1952, and her first book published was Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs: a Popular History of Egyptology. Her first novel was published in 1966. This is the second edition of Black Land, Red Land, originally published in 1978.

This well-written and readable book is an excellent source of information on life in ancient Egypt. Mertz covers everything, including childhood, pets, women and queens, clothing, jewelry and cosmetics, towns and houses, education, magic, religion, science, medicine, mathematics, pyramid building, boats, mummification and tombs. All are fascinating, though my personal favorite is the chapter on painting and sculpture, and the Amarna period. The XVIII Dynasty has always fascinated me: the time of Queen Hatshepsut, Akhenaton, and Tutankhamon. It is difficult to imagine a kingdom and society that lasted for nearly 4,000 years; the U.S. is an infant in comparison. There is a chronology, map, notes, and a list of books for further reading. The line drawings and photographs enhance the text perfectly.

Readers of the Amelia Peabody and Vicky Bliss mysteries, anyone longing to travel to see the ancient wonders of Egypt, or anyone with an interest in archaeology, will love this book.

As a Former Expat Who Lived 15 Years in Egypt, I Found this a Fresh, Remarkable Approach.

Bearing in mind that I lived and worked in Egypt for nearly 25 percent of my 62 years on this planet. Well, 25 percent unless someone can somehow prove that I am a reincarnated pharaoh or visiting spaceman.

Readers of this book will appreciate my humor, as I also am confident the author would, were she to read this review.

One of the many bits of her wry humor was when she warns the squeamish to skip her description of a particularly gruesome bit. The then jabs the reader halphway through, stating, I told you...

Barbara Mertz is my type of writer. If I ever get off my duff to write of modern Egypt, i will want to appeal to the same mindset Mertz so gracefully educates regarding a topic that usually is rather dry. Well, it is dry if the writer is trying to stay close to the serious observations and discoveries.

Perhaps that dryness is why so many less serious and less informed writers author the, uh, aw, the heck with it, let's call it what it is, the kooky fantasy tales of the occult and visitors from some far flung Galaxy.

I have a somewhat vast library regarding ancient Egypt. I've taken two magnificent cruises to visit the tombs and temples between Luxor and Aswan, plus once visited Abu Simbel. Yet, I gained unspeakably more understanding from this one book, including the audible.com version narrated by Lorna Raver. Indeed, Raver did a terrific job of narration.

As a former expat having resided 15 years in Egypt, I found this to be a remarkable, fresh approach to teach us about ancient Egypt.

Therefore, I not only enthusiastically rate this at five stars. I recommend getting the Kindle book plus Whispersync so you can listen when you don't have time to read the book. I'd give Red Land, Black Land 10 stars if I could. Belongs in every historian's library.

What's more, I intend also to buy a printed copy next payday. It IS that good, for me anyway.

An interesting overview of a very dynamic space

It can be hard to justify buying a book about a place as fluid and temporal as Second Life. In a world with a constantly-shifting, user-created landscape, what could one write that will be of any use in the next few years?

Given this challenge, Wagner James Au crafts an excellent book about the history and nature of Second Life. Leveraging his status as a former employee and virtual embedded journalist, Au shares with the reader his well-researched subjective viewpoint into a world of fluid forms and fluid personalities. Touching on such topics as the economy, socialization, politics, the nature of self, and the interaction between the real world and the artificial one, the book weaves a narrative that is one part company history, one part personal experience, and one part industry commentary.

While the book overall is an interesting read, I found myself having to swallow some significant typos and informational errors. This is a pet peeve of mine, and I feel the book really could have used a second editorial pass and some fact-checking (for instance, the 3D embedded content viewer inDuality ([...]) is made by Pelican Crossing, not Penguin Crossing). Print is not the web, and sadly, once one publishes an edition of a book with this many errors, it's published forever.

But if you have a tolerance for typos and a willingness to do your own fact-checking (which will be necessary anyway, given the changeable nature of the subject matter), this book is a good read and can serve as a starting point for further forays into the field of 3D interactive worlds, and Second Life specifically.

Wagner James Au, as both journalist and end-user, is privy to two intertwining histories: that of the California startup Linden Lab and the rapidly expanding online virtual world of Second Life. His "The Making of Second Life: Notes from the New World" is a largely anecdotal account of these two histories. Whether by eye witness or a careful, thorough reading of Second Life's periphery blogosphere, Au does a nice job of synopsizing key moments in the evolution of Linden Lab and Second Life. He also qualifies his reporting by theorizing characteristics of human behavior in avatar form, i.e. his concept of Mirrored Flourishing where the user improves his or her physical world standing through interaction with virtual worlds. "The Making of Second Life" would benefit from closer reliance on empirical social science statistics and surveys---rather than largely anecdotal observations---for drawing conclusions about behavior in virtual world. However, despite this aside, Au's work is rife with rich, colorful accounts of the larger-than-life personalities and events in Second Life. It is an invaluable primer for anyone interested in Second Life history from an author who has been there since its inception.

The Making of Second Life is THE book you want to read before any other book about Second Life. Whether you are a 'Second Lifer' or just a curious review reader without any Second Life experience- this book is a must read for anyone even remotely interested in simulated 3d experiences of any kind or even ways of transcending the human embodiment into flesh. It will give you a great insight into what Second Life is (do NOT assume upon the name!), and how Second Life became what it is today. From the conception of the idea, formation of Linden Lab, first residents experiences, romance, protests, war...a fantastic and upbeat read that doesn't ever stray away into 'too much geek talk' or leave you with questions unanswered. Wagner James Au (virtually responsive to the name Hamlet Au) has made a great contribution to the history of human virtuality by writing this book. Thank you.

About the Author

Gregory O. Hall completed his Ph.D. in Political Science, with a concentration in International Relations from Howard University. He currently serves as Director of the International Studies Program at Morehouse College. Dr. Hall has held appointments at several institutions, to include Hong Kong and Turkey, and, he was a 1997 Fulbright Fellow in Kazan, Russia. Dr. Hall is author of several articles, and is co-editor of and contributor to the book, Eternal Colonialism (University Press of America, Inc., 2010).

if you like gambling or vegas, then you'll enjoy this reading. busting vegas by ben mezrich and jonny magic & the card shark kids by david kushner were better.

Too Many Hands, Not Enough Soap

Talk about mixed feelings. On one hand, I was disappointed that Money for Nothing didn't spend more time describing the experiences of lottery winners. There's some of that in this book, but not much. On the other hand, I was fascinated to read about an entire industry that I had no idea even existed.

Then there's the tone of the book. On one hand it often reads like something from the 1950s, a hard-driving salesman who parties in Vegas and motivates himself by screaming "I am King Kong!". But on the other hand, Ugel also sounds like a nerdy Gen X-er who thinks too much, like someone from This American Life, a show he's written for.

Ugel works for a company that pays lottery winners a lump sum for their future payments. He never divulges how much the company pays the lottery winners, because they pay as little as they can get away with. It depends on how much the lottery winner needs cash and how skilled the salesman is. Using California as an example, let's say you win a jackpot of 26 million dollars. If you take the annual payment option, the Califonia Lottery will pay you an average of a million dollars (before taxes) per year for 26 years. The Lottery doesn't actually have the 26 million now, but if they invest about 13 million (depending on current interest rates) now, they'll be able to pay you 26 million over 26 years. If you opt for a lump sum payment, they simply give you that 13 million now. Ugel's company does something like that for winners who don't have the lump sum option in their state or didn't when they won. He describes it as a service for people who want it. It would be a service, just like cashing checks or lending money can be a service. Except when it's those usurious check cashing places in the strip malls or loan sharks that charge exorbitant rates.

So on one hand, it's disgusting that Ugel spent years smooth-talking people into giving up their future winnings on some fast cash now, but on the other hand these lottery winners squandered a lot of money if they're so hard up they need to even talk to a Ugel or his oily colleagues.

I'm not the only one who's conflicted about this. Ugel spends much of the book justifying the business of buying out lottery winnings for pennies on the dollar. He also spends a lot of time wallowing in self-hatred for having being so successful at such a slimy occupation.

At one point Ugel describes having a ritual fried chicken dinner before closing on a big deal. "I was nervous and my palms were sweating. The sweat mixed with the grease from the chicken...I was a mess. I had to get out of there. I stopped into the bathroom and compulsively washed my hands, soap and water, soap and water, soap and water, trying to get rid of the grease." After reading Money for Nothing, I know how he feels. In this book, Farr examines the spoken and written language of post-observation teaching-practice feedback on teacher education programs. To do so, she draws upon theories from discourse analysis, conversation analysis, and pragmatics to frame the analysis of feedback meetings and written tutor reports, which are then examined using comparative quantitative and qualitative corpus-based techniques. The overall aim is to determine the defining characteristics of this genre, focusing especially on pragmatic factors, with the ultimate goal of investigating the salient aspects responsible for making feedback both effective and affective. Farr's research draws upon a spoken corpus of feedback interactions and a written corpus of tutor reports from language teacher education and is also strongly informed by data in the form of diary reflections and questionnaire responses from student teachers and questionnaire responses from the relevant tutors.
