I actually thought DANCE WITH A VAMPIRE, book four of the VAMPIRE KISSES series, was going to be the last one. So I was overjoyed to find out that the story of Raven and Alexander continues in THE COFFIN CLUB.

It is now summer vacation and Raven is missing Alexander. At the end of the last book, Alexander and his caretaker, Jameson, left Dullsville for Hipsterville to return the young Valentine to his family, leaving Raven all alone. Now that school is out, Raven has decided to visit her cool Aunt Libby in Hipsterville. From her aunt, she learns that the creepy mansion in town is being rented. Immediately, Raven investigates and finds her beloved and Jameson camped out in the place.

After a sweet reconciliation, Alexander rushes her out of the place to go on another mission. Raven is left wandering the town waiting for her aunt to finish up one of her classes. She ventures back to The Coffin Club (the infamous place where she first encountered the evil Jagger, Valentine's older brother) and stumbles upon the Dungeon. The Dungeon is the coolest place below the main club. It is also members only. It takes Raven a while to figure out that the "members only" part means vampires. REAL vampires. And there she meets the hypnotic Phoenix. Phoenix may just have some secrets of his own. And Raven stumbles upon Jagger yet again.

As the story develops, Raven gets caught up in the world of vampires and realizes that she does truly fit in with the vampire crowd. She meets two cool gals, Onyx and Sapphire, who befriend her. They accept her for who she is. And she finds out that most vampires just want to be who they are and lead as normal a life as possible.

There is trouble brewing at the Dungeon between Jagger and Phoenix, and the vampire world in Hipsterville may forever be changed. Caught between the mortal and immortal world, Raven again struggles with who she should be. Does she give everything up to be with Alexander for eternity, or should she remain mortal and see how things progress?

Ms. Schreiber keeps the reader coming back for more romance and adventure between Raven and Alexander. They are an unlikely romantic couple who enchants all. The story is light, with mostly action and little depth, but it is truly entertaining and fun. The story leaves the reader waiting for more once again.

Forever a better series than Twilight
By Danielle Perosi
I have been a long-time fan of the Vampire Kisses series, and there's not better words to describe how realistic and romantic it is.
I was particularly interested in the 5th book in the series; there was suspense on every page. I couldn't turn them fast enough to see what happens next! Raven's adventures are absolutely addicting!

Goth girl in Club Vampire
By R. C. Mulhare
I'd be the first to admit that I have a soft spot for this series: the characterization can be a little silly, but it's endearingly silly. Raven might be a little ditzy and clueless about what vampires are really like, but fortunately, the vampires in her world aren't *too* dangerous. Though, as she finds out when she follows Alexander, her vampire sweetheart, to "Hipsterville", she ventures deeper into the secret recesses of the town's Goth club, she finds that there's more going on among Alexander's kindred than she first assumed...

I'm a little dismayed that the self-awareness and self-questioning that Raven had started to display at the end of Book 4 didn't carry over into this volume, but since our girl is discovering more about Alexander's world and how it works, there probably wasn't much time for introspection.

Made in Italy: Food and Stories, by Giorgio Locatelli

Giorgio Locatelli started helping out in the family restaurant at age five. He was raised in Corgeno in northern Italy, close to the Swiss border and Milan. Almost everything his family ate and drank was produced locally. He was told by the head chef at his first real Italian restaurant job that he would never make it as a chef. His grandmother, who shared her great love of food with him, said Giorgio would have to go back and show him. And so he did. After getting suspended from cooking school because of kissing a girl on the school's steps, he went on to become a greatly admired chef.

Made in Italy is a 624-page, vibrantly illustrated book full of Locatelli's recipes, insight and historical detail about Italian food. He combines food narrative with hands-on expertise of a top chef. He peppers the book with evocative stories and funny and often outspoken observations on the state of food today. This is the contemporary Italian food bible, from the acknowledged master of modern Italian cooking.

High-end Italian dining in early 21st century
By Reader A
I bought the UK edition of Locatelli's Made In Italy but the US edition should be identical except the metric measurements are exchanged for American systems of measurements.

Overall speaking, the book is comprehensive and introduces what the author serves at his Locatelli restaurant in London, a little like the UK equivalent of the Babbo's owned by Mario Batali. Loctaelli serves dishes similar to what is served in a typical posh restaurant in early 21st century Milan - arguably Italy's economic centre, and thus if you are in to look for Italian-American fares like meatballs in red sauce or steak pizzaiola, Frank Pellegrino's "Rao's Cookbook" and "Rao's Recipes from the Neighborhood" would be the great alternatives instead.

Based in London now, Locatelli is northern Italian (born in Corgeno near Milan), so his section on risotto is fantastic and more comprehensive than any other "general Italian cookbooks" I have encountered including Antonio Carluccio, Mario Batali, Guy Grossi, or Frank Pellegrino. In addition, Locatelli also spends around 100 pages explaining Italian ingredients, from common ones like tomatoes to delicacies like white truffles. I am impressed with his detailed explanation on making good fresh egg pasta in particular.

A list of typical dishes in the book runs like this:

1. Antipasti: radicchio salad with button mushrooms and Gorgonzola dressing, beef carpaccio, parmesan grissini
2. Zuppa: broccoli soup with ricotta cheese dumplings, fish soup
3. Risotto: asparagus risotto, clam risotto, quail risotto
4. Pasta: linguine with pesto, tagliatelle with marinated sardines, pheasant ravioli, potato dumplings with artichoke and murazzano cheese
5. Pesce (fish): chargrilled tuna, roast brill with green olives and cherry tomatoes
6. Carne (meat): chargrilled lamb with peppers and aubergine (eggplant) puree, veal chop with artichoke and new potatoes, roast piegon, black truffle and garlic puree
7. Dolci (desserts): strawberry and mango lasagne, tiramisu with banana and liquorice ice-cream, amaretto gelato, amaretti and and other biscuits

You will notice as I mentioned above, from this list a lot of the dishes will be restaurant grade, but there are also many simple ones you can try. The only disappointment for me is that seafood dishes are largely absent when compared with other Italy cookbooks. It may be because Corgeno is near the Swiss border and landlocked.

You may find that just like a majority of Italian cooks and foodies, Locatelli belongs to the Slow Food movement, thus some of his comments will be very stridently against the "normal" foods - certainly in my opinion far more outspoken than Batali. Still, compared with some of the extreme voices from the Californian food scene he may not be so resolute as to putting you off.

I highly recommend this book if you are a serious cook and want to finesse your Italian cooking skills. At the least it provides good reading materials for armchair cooks like me. I have known from the online forums a lot of American foodies are interested to source the UK edition even before the American edition was published, so I gather this book should appeal to a lot of US audiences. If you find the book too foreign in tone and expensive at US$60.00, Mario Batali's "The Babbo Cookbook" provides a more American and more cost effective alternative.

A Tome, indeed
By PH
I purchased this book for my sister-in-law for Christmas. We lived in London for a while and are familiar with Locanda Locatelli, the author's restaurant, and my brother and sis-in-law love Italy and the food, so this was thought to be a good fit. I read through the book before I wrapped it, and I was amazed at how comprehensive it is. There are wonderful stories and all kinds of insight into details of individual ingredients. It is absorbing and I could easily get lost in it, even before thinking about trying some recipes. I think if you are looking for the answer to any Italian food/ingredient/method question, it has got to be in here!

Rare gem of a cookbook
By D. Perez
I'm a cook who studied and worked in Italy. Therefore, I can tell you it is very difficult to find a cookbook that conveys the emotion, passion and devotion the Italians have for their cuisine(s), even in Italy. Therefore, the arrival of Giorgio Locatelli's book on American shores is an event to be celebrated.
Chef Giorgio does a fantastic job describing ingredients and recipes and includes histories and anecdotes from his own life, making this book more than just a cookbook; it is a rare gem. It is a gift from a celebrated Italian chef who evokes the experiences of Italian food just as his countrymen (and women) see it, taste it, smell it, eat it, live it, and, more importantly, share it.
Although many recipes are restaurant-grade and can seem intimidating to the amateur cook, there are so many more dishes any experienced home cook can make at home. Plus, Chef Giorgio speaks to the reader with enough confidence so as to make the most intricate dishes "do-able" in your own home kitchen.
Made In Italy also reads like a wonderful tale and you will spend lots of time reading it on your couch in between selecting which recipes to make. You will really start to relate to the chef as well as to the ingredients he writes at length about.
By far, this book, along with Gillian Riley's Oxford Companion to Italian Food AND the classic The Silver Spoon are must-haves for any true Italian cook - amateur or professional. If you're new to cooking Italian food or cooking in general, I suggest you get all three books. Start cooking with The Silver Spoon (just like many Italian brides and young Italian professionals have), graduate up to Made In Italy, and always refer to the Oxford Companion!
Remember, Italian cuisine is a style, not a technique!

Ethics for Managers: Philosophical Foundations & Business Realities, by Joseph Gilbert

This book examines issues relating to ethical decision-making in the managerial context. Managers are paid to oversee the work of others, and in the course of their work, they often make decisions that impact other people. This book is intended to help managers, and students of management, reflect on the impact of their decisions, and to help them in making such decisions ethically.

Ethics has to do with interpersonal or social values, and the rules of conduct that derive from them. By the time an individual becomes a manager, he or she invariably has a sense of moral right and wrong. Author Joseph Gilbert examines the sources of this sense, and how it is shaped and altered by various influences. He lays the groundwork for discussion by delving into the meaning of ethics and its philosophical foundations, then exploring its application to the task of management. This balanced approach both makes clear the moral implications of actions taken by managers and provides some time-tested ways of thinking about moral issues when they arise. Without preaching or critiquing the reader’s existing ethical sense, Ethics for Managers prepares the manager or student of business to adequately address the difficult decisions that will crop up during their career in an ethical and self-aware manner.

Fantastic Novel

As a teacher, this is part of the required reading for my year 9 class. I've listened to it on audio tape and also read it and it cracks me up every time. The story is fast paced and relevant, and the characters well drawn.

However, as an Australian the jargon and use of slang also appeal to me. I would worry that American readers might miss some of the culturally specific references ('Wussy-crap' being one). Don't let that stop you giving it a go though. I would recommend this book for young teenage boys, as it deals with issues that relate to them. If they don't understand the language, tell them to email an Australian ... that should sort it all out!

Anything but a white whale!!
By Lisa Hoffman
What a fun book! This has to be, hands down, one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time. It's a first-person account of the trials and tribulations of a year 9 boy, Ishmael Leseur, and his band of very colourful friends ("Razza" Zorzotto, Ignatius Prindabel, Bill Kingsley, James Scobie) and not-so-friends (Barry Bagsley and company). Through the school year, they have to face debating debacles, girls, and bugs...lots of bugs... The writing is excellent and the dialogue is laugh-out-loud hilarious in a lot of places. It's the sort of story that just pulls you along, and I found the book nearly impossible to put down.
I'd give this book more than 5 stars if I could...a terrific read with great characters and fabulous dialogue. I just wish my son was old enough to enjoy this book with me!!!

Funny, very Aussie novel
By Charmaine
Poor Ishmael, nothing seems to be going right in his world. The characters in this story are wonderfully rich and individual. Ishmael makes a great narrator as he fumbles his way through school life, coming up with inventive ways to avoid being bullied.

Excellent book!
By T. Kirkwood
Despite the negative feedback, I decided to try out Purplicious. The name, as with Pinkalicious, was too cute to resist. I want to address some of the negative feedback from other buyers with my opinion.
Some of the complaints came from parents of children under 5. If you use the "look inside" feature, you will see that the book is geared for 5-8 year olds. My 3 year old enjoyed the book; however, I am sure she does not fully understand the moral behind the story yet.
One response said "the mean girls don't even learn a lesson in the end." Well, that is a life lesson. Not every mean person learns a lesson. THAT is a lesson for the person being hurt. The lesson is that people are mean and you just have to ignore them, be yourself, and move on.
The book does have a negative tone and there are low points to Pinkalicious' feelings. However, many people have those feelings and do not know how to handle them. This book allows a child to learn that many people have down moments but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Yes, there are phrases like, "pink stinks", "pink is for babies", "pink ice cream is for sissies." So what!? Kids say these words and worse every day. It is a nice way to introduce things your kids will eventually hear in an environment in which parents can advise them on how to handle those types of words.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will recommend it to anyone. It is not a happy-go-lucky, feel-good story. It is a story about personal preferences, how mean people can be, and how to be yourself!!! How can a story with that premise be so bad?!

Unfortunate Follow-up to a Gem
By Amazon Customer
Pinkalicious is a hugely loved book in my household, and we've shared it with friends and even read it at school in our girls classes (kindergarten and 1st grade). So we were excited about the prospect of a sequel. Fortunately, I read the new book, Purplicious, at a bookstore before purchasing. I was amazed at the consistently negative tone of the book and how how huge a downer it is. The final redemption at the end of the book comes too late, following a bombardment of negativity, and unfortunately, I don't believe it is enough to reverse the otherwise very sad tone of the book.

In this new book, Pinkalicious discovers to her horror that all her friends at school are now wearing black. The friends ridicule her mercilously for still loving pink when it is now out of fashion. Pinkalicious gets sad and depressed and puts all of her pink clothes away. Her parents and brother don't know what to do. She wears blue because she has the blues. Finally, in the last four pages of the book, Pinkalicious meets a new girl at school who shows how she can mix her beloved pink with blue and make purple, and finally Pinkalicious is happy again.

A 40-page book. 36 pages of relentless teasing, ridicule and sadness followed by a 4-page redemption. I opted not to purchase the book and don't think my girls would have enjoyed reading it.

Disappointing.

Great lesson - opens discussions with children
By M. McCord
I am so sad to see all the negative reviews on this book. The first time I read both Pinkalicious and Purplicious to my three year old daughter I was concerned about the words used and subject matter. In both cases, the book has opened up great discussions with this little person who understands more than we realize and needs help forming her opinions and actions when faced with mean girls, bad words and too many cupcakes! Hiding our children from situations they will most likely face does not protect them. I wish I could protect my girls from all the bad things that happen out there but we all know that is not reality. So why not start to introduce them to these moments through a little girl they have learned to love.

Drollery to the nth degree
By Paul W. Wright
This book is a real find - amusing, informative, and filled with all kinds of little known facts about New York's fabled history. The author somehow puts them all together in a format that - importantly enhanced by his well crafted drawings - bring both wit and humor to what might otherwise be considered as trivial arcania. Stevenson, both a noted New Yorker cartoonist and cover artist, and a prolific author of dozens of children's books, has put together a wonderful collection of interesting New York history.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5–8—This story picks up where Playing with Fire (HarperCollins, 2008) leaves off. The skeleton detective and his 14-year-old sidekick, Valkyrie, have uncovered an evil plot to allow the Faceless Ones through a portal into our world, which will surely bring about the destruction of life as we know it. Banished from the department and branded a dangerous character, Skulduggery is not allowed to work the case, but he is able to uncover enough information to put the pieces together. The plot contains many twists and double crosses as dubious characters factor into the mystery. In the end, sacrifices are made and Valkyrie is faced with a difficult decision. This third installment has enough action to keep casual or new readers interested in what happens next. Kids who have outgrown Lemony Snicket will enjoy the series.—Karen Hoth, Manatee Elementary School, Fort Myers, FL END

About the Author

Derek Landy lives near Dublin. Before writing his children's story about a sharply dressed skeleton detective, he wrote the screenplays for a zombie movie and a little thriller in which everybody dies.

As a blackbelt in Kenpo Karate, he has taught countless children how to defend themselves, in the hopes of one day building his own private munchkin army. He firmly believes that they await his call to strike against his enemies (he doesn't actually have any enemies but he's assuming they'll show up sooner or later).

The reason Derek writes his own biographical blurb is so that he can finally refer to himself in the third person without looking pompous or insane.

As they say in the U.K. - "brilliant"
By Pop Bop
I don't know why the Skulduggery books haven't succeeded in crossing over to the U.S., given their great popularity in the United Kingdom. They aren't particularly British, (except for the dry humor and understated violence), and are perfectly accessible to an American reader. But, be that as it may, you'll just have to be content to be way ahead of your fellow readers on the cool scale, assuming you can find copies of these books.

This volume three continues the development of the characters, advances the series' story arc, brings back some favorite secondary actors, and maintains the pace and deadpan humor of its predecessors. If you liked the first two volumes, (and you should probably try to read these in order), you should be happy with this installment.

Valkyrie Cain and company are back for another daring, supernatural adventure in Derek Landy's THE FACELESS ONES. This is the best SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT novel I've read so far, with much more development of the characters, their relationships, and higher stakes than we've ever seen before. If you thought life was dangerous for this crowd in the first two books, hold on to you hats - 'cause things only get worse from here.

Teleporters across the world are being murdered. Despite the suspension of his official title as Sanctuary's lead investigator, skeleton detective Skulduggery Pleasant and his young protégé, Valkyrie Cain, are on the case. It's small wonder then, when they're contacted by the world's last trained teleporter, Emmett Peregrine, for protection. But when Peregrine is murdered by members of The Diablerie on ace swordswoman Tanith Low's watch, the savvy duo knows the stakes have risen to an all-time high. For this time our heroes aren't just facing a skilled dark sorcerer intent on revenge, but a crazed madman determined to bring back a nearly indestructible force: The Faceless Ones.

What I enjoyed so much this time around was how Mr. Landy maintained the plot's forward-charging momentum, while simultaneously deepening the relationships between the main characters. The affection between Valkyrie and her new group of friends grows more apparent with each book, especially the almost parent/child attachment between her and Skulduggery, despite his best efforts to remain aloof. These familial stirrings are further evidenced when both mad scientist Kenspeckle Grouse and ex-boxer-turned-fine-tailor Ghastly Bespoke express deep concern over the increasing risks Valkyrie's new job poses to her life.

There are also wonderful scenes demonstrating how much "life" Valkyrie is missing out on by allowing her mirror self to take over her everyday activities, whether it's her first kiss, the growing distance in the relationship with her parents, or Tanith's tacit agreement with Kenspeckle's belief that Val needs friends her own age. As she sustains one injury after another and multiple near-death encounters, it becomes clear to the reader (if not Valkyrie herself) that this wickedly cool existence comes at a high price.

I applaud Derek Landy for not being afraid of taking the SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT novels in an even darker direction and showing the effects such events have on his young heroine's psyche. I'm eagerly anticipating book #4.

There is no other place where you can get a dry sense of humor, sarcastic bantering, and a host of original characters
By KidsReads
After defeating endless vampires, demons and bad guys, you would think that Skulduggery Pleasant and his assistant, Valkyrie Cain, would be ready for a break. Although blacklisted by the Sanctuary, Skulduggery and Valkyrie still seem to be in the thick of all matters paranormal and unusual. You didn't expect them to sit at home and just watch the world come to an end, did you?

After inspecting the crime scene of a teleporter's murder, four more teleporters show up dead and the trend is utterly disturbing. Not only are teleporters extremely hard to catch and/or kill, all of them have been murdered in the same gruesome way. Skulduggery and Valkyrie launch into an investigation that turns up even more alarming information. Someone named Batu is killing off teleporters to narrow down the population to one...and that one teleporter will be used to open the gateway to the world of the Faceless Ones.

Of course, there are numerous issues to complicate matters. Finding a teleporter is never easy, and confining them to one location is even trickier. Batu also has drummed up support and created "The Diablerie," a problematic group of assassins who will stop at nothing to make sure that the gateway is opened. The Sanctuary isn't exactly being helpful, seeing as their head detective, Remus Crux, gets confused easily about who the real bad guys are. It also doesn't help that a spy is hidden in the Sanctuary passing along crucial information to the Diablerie.

In the midst of all these issues, Valkyrie Cain is struggling with some problems of her own. Newly 14, Valkyrie has grown over the past year and her protective outer gear is no longer fitting. Her reflection is doing well keeping up appearances at home and school, but her reflection also received her first kiss from a boy, and Valkyrie is disappointed to find the whole experience devoid of emotion. Perhaps she is most uncomfortable with the fact that everyone keeps telling her she needs to live a normal teenage life, one that is not fraught with danger and an untimely death. It looks as though her nightly excursions may finally be catching up with her.

However, Valkyrie's personal problems will have to wait for another day as the threat of the Faceless Ones is very real and very dangerous. If you've read the previous installments in this series, then you know that there is an epic battle, a couple of deaths, and some bruises and broken bones. In the end, though, there are smiles all around as yet another disaster is averted. Not to give anything away, readers, but don't plan on smiling at the end of this one.

I've always thought that the Skulduggery books have long been underappreciated. Sure, it's fun to have wizards, witches, magic, blah, blah, blah, but there is no other place where you can get a dry sense of humor, sarcastic bantering, and a host of original characters that cause readers to shed tears from so much laughing. Quick wit is hard to come by these days, and if you read too fast, you're going to miss all the little gems inserted craftily into the story. I, for one, can't wait to see what Derek Landy has up his sleeve next.
