About the Author

Susan Tamasi is Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Program in Linguistics, Emory University. She has presented at NWAV, AAAL, Sociolinguistics Symposium, and American Dialect Society, Her areas of research include sociolinguistics, language variation, language attitudes, American English, and health communication.

Lamont Antieau is an independent language consultant who has held positions as Research Associate (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Visiting Instructor (Western Carolina University), and Lecturer (Mississippi State University). He has presented at NWAV, American Dialect Society, Southeastern Conference on Linguistics, and International Association of Forensic Linguists. His areas of research include language variation, dialectology, American English, corpus linguistics, and biomedical informatics.

This book offers a unique look at language in the United States by combining attention to dialect variation (in English) with attention to multilingualism. The thorough, engaging treatment of Spanish is current and especially welcomed. The book is accessible to non-linguist readers, who will find it informative and engaging, but yet sophisticated enough in its treatment of the subject matter to be an excellent teaching resource in a variety of courses, including Language in Society, Language in the United States, Sociolinguistics, and others.

Unrealistic and Self-Important

I found this book to be frustrating. As someone who has had a weight loss surgery procedure, I found her lack of personal insight annoying. She mostly discusses her extensive travel, fancy clothing labels and gourmet dining experiences; that is, when she's not plugging her own website and products. This book seemed like a vanity project and nothing more.

What a person really wants and needs when researching WLS is a real and honest account of the ups and downs, before AND after surgery. They need to know that they aren't alone in their destructive behaviors and failures. Ms. Leach doesn't discuss how she got big in the first place, what behaviors lead to such a dramatic weight gain, etc. This book is mostly one long description of her privleged lifestyle and perfect figure (after plastic surgery). There are patients out there who don't have these pie-in-the-sky options, and I wonder how this book could possibly relate to them.

Additionally, over half of this book is dedicated to recipes. Recipes, by the way, that are not for the average working Joe/Josephine with children and several require you to buy products from her website in order to prepare them properly.

If you must read this "memoir", I would not suggest buying it. Check it out from your local library, or - better yet - find a more informational and substantial read elsewhere.

Disappointing unless you want the recipes

I have to admit, I found this book disappointing. I am pre-surgery, in the qualifying stages, and have done a lot of research. I hear about dumping and emotional changes and mood swings and changes in relationships with people, as well as with food. So I expected this book would give me a realistic view of what to expect ahead.
I know each person's experience is different, but I got tired of the diary of what gourmet food she was able to eat each day after surgery...plenty of ! points throughout the narrative, like a pre-teen's diary, but not a lot of useful information. I was also disappointed she went right on eating absolutely everything pre-surgery to say goodbye to food, and then found she can still enjoy gourmet delights, just in tiny portions. Most of us are not gourmets, and it is not a healthy approach to weight loss surgery to have your last supper three times a day every day before surgery. You need to get your head in the right place first, and for me, it is breaking the food addiction. Susan obviously is able to continue her love affair with food without skipping a beat, just tiny portions. There's very little about the emotional changes to expect, etc. - her life seems perfect, she can afford the plastic surgery afterward, etc. There was nothing about the psychological aspects involved, just the good times with friends and sharing delicious food and being loved. It just wasn't the kind of book I'd hoped for.
On the positive side, though, I will say the recipes are good, and are broken down into WLS portions and normal portions.
I guess I was expecting a "real" person with real issues, but instead this book is about someone who has her cake and eats it too.

Only For The Upper Crust

This book does one thing very successfully.... it leaves me completely unable to relate. I read this book prior to my weight loss surgery 3 years ago and again several months after my wls. Call me boring, but I'm just your average middle class working mother - and these faboooo trips she's talking about, the fancy schmancy foods she is referring to and the wine sipping... I just could not relate. I would rather read about how real life people with normal lifestyles that include the insane hustle and bustle and financial pressures of real life deal with getting the proper nutrition, life after weight loss surgery and its impact on their relationships and lifestyles.

Heck, I can't begin to find some of the foods she mentions, let alone afford them. You're better off not frustrating yourself with this book. But, then again, if you are "Upper Crust" and enjoy snobbery, this will be perfect for you. Remember, weight loss surgery doesn't fix the mind...

Wonderfully Warm Tales With Real Substance & Wisdom

If you find the whole genre of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' type books to be annoyingly sappy and over-the-top then this book is your antidote.

It features real stories from real life whereby the author (a Quaker pastor) draws real substantive wisdom. Where Chicken Soup and the like were "cute" or "charming", Gulley is challenging. There's plenty laugh out loud comedy here too, and enough sweetness to aggravate a toothache, but those elements are the icing instead of the cake.

Gulley talks about raising children to be tough, the capacity people have for mid-life change, prayer, loss, flexibility, the home, the dignity of work, the debilitating effect of television, why we need more listening and less psychology, love between a husband & wife, and many other subjects. Nearly all of these short essays are punctuated with surprisingly relevant scriptural anecdotes from the Good Book.

On the first page, Gulley wrote, "I thank God I was born before Nintendo video games and all the other things that keep kids from getting out and exploring their environs. My parents turned off the television set and sent me outdoors, where I met all kinds of interesting people, like Mrs. Harvey and Doctor Gibbs and Mr. Welty."

And he isn't kidding. This is a superb read that--through the window of the author's life--manages to search out so much of what's wrong with the world, offers beautiful alternatives, and does it all with the charity, humor, modesty, and self-depreciation proper to a Christian.

You'll read it over and over again!

I'm 13 and I'll admit I only bought this book because I had a gift certificate to a local Christian bookstore and I couldn't find anything to buy in the young adult section. But after being bored one day I picked it and it's dusty cover off of my bookshelf and started reading it. I'm glad I did. Philip Gulley writes in an easy manner that anyone can understand, even a teenager like me. His stories make you laugh, even though I don't think he tries to be funny. It just comes out natural in his writing. I've read the book twice and got my mom to read it and she liked too. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read mini-stories, because that's what the book is. You can put the book down and not have to worry about remembering characters' names or other details. It's full of stories that will make you laugh and also warm your heart. So why are sitting here reading my review? Buy the book on Amazon today! If I'm 13 and I liked it, I think you'll like it too. Bought this as a gift for my Mother who is in a nursing home, looked for light, up lifting reading for her and WOW did I find it in this author, bought two more of his books and am thrilled with the poignant and sometimes humorous stories. Would recommend again.

About the Author

Carrie Clark attained her doctorate from the University of Denver. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Trauma Therapy Program at Women’s College Hospital. She is on staff as a clinical psychologist in the Trauma Therapy Program. She specializes in the area of trauma therapy.

Catherine C. Classen is a clinical psychologist with expertise in the treatment of psychological trauma. She is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Senior Scientist and Director of the Women’s Mental Health Research Program at Women’s College Research Institute, and Academic leader of the Trauma Therapy Program at Women’s College Hospital. She is a past president of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, sits on the editorial board of several trauma journals, and has numerous publications in the area of psychological trauma.

Anne Fourt is an occupational therapist and team coordinator for the Trauma Therapy Program and Women Recovering from Abuse Program at Women's College Hospital. She is an assistant professor in the Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Toronto and has a cross appointment in the Department of Psychiatry.

Maithili Shetty is a psychiatrist and clinical faculty at the University of British Columbia. She received her medical degree at the University of Western Ontario and completed her residency in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Shetty is the Director of Medical Education, Medical Director of the Psychiatric Assessment and Stabilization Unit and Inpatient Lead for the Department of Psychiatry at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.

About the Author

Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE, was the author of more than 70 books, including the internationally bestselling Discworld series of novels. His books have been adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. In January 2009, Pratchett was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to literature. Sir Terry, who lived in England, died in March 2015 at the age of 66.

THE COLOUR OF MAGIC

ON a world supported on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There’s an avaricious but inept wizard [Rincewind], a naive tourist [Twoflower] whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course The Edge of the planet . . .

How it all began:

In a distant and second-hand set of dimensions, in an astral plane that was never meant to fly, the curling star-mists waver and part . . .

There was the theory that A’Tuin had come from nowhere and would continue at a uniform crawl, or steady gait, into nowhere, for all time. This theory was popular among academics.

An alternative, favoured by those of a religious persuasion, was that A’Tuin was crawling from the Birthplace to the Time of Mating, as were all the stars in the sky which were, obviously, also carried by giant turtles. When they arrived they would briefly and passionately mate, for the first and only time, and from that fiery union new turtles would be born to carry a new pattern of worlds. This was known as the Big Bang hypothesis.

The twin city of Ankh-Morpork, foremost of all the cities bounding the Circle Sea, was as a matter of course the home of a large number of gangs, thieves’ guilds, syndicates and similar organizations. This was one of the reasons for its wealth.

The stranger smiled widely and fumbled yet again in the pouch. This time his hand came out holding a large gold coin. It was in fact slightly larger than an 8,000-dollar Ankhian crown and the design on it was unfamiliar, but it spoke inside Hugh’s mind in a language he understood perfectly. My current owner, it said, is in need of succour and assistance; why not give it to him, so you and me can go off somewhere and enjoy ourselves?

If complete and utter chaos was lightning, then he’d be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting ‘All gods are bastards’.

Tourist, Rincewind had decided, meant ‘idiot’.

At about this time a hitherto unsuccessful fortune-teller living on the other side of the block chanced to glance into her scrying bowl, gave a small scream and, within the hour, had sold her jewellery, various magical accoutrements, most of her clothes and almost all her other possessions that could not be conveniently carried on the fastest horse she could buy. The fact that later on, when her house collapsed in flames, she herself died in a freak landslide in the Morpork Mountains, proves that Death, too, has a sense of humour.

The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork smiled, but with his mouth only.

‘I’m sure you won’t dream of trying to escape from your obligations by fleeing the city . . .’

‘I assure you the thought never even crossed my mind, lord.’

‘Indeed? Then if I were you I’d sue my face for slander.’

‘Ah, Gorphal,’ said the Patrician pleasantly. ‘Come in. Sit down. Can I press you to a candied starfish?’

‘I am yours to command, master,’ said the old man calmly. ‘Save, perhaps, in the matter of preserved echinoderms.’

There are said to be some mystic rivers – one drop of which can steal a man’s life away. After its turbid passage through the twin cities the Ankh could have been one of them.

That’s what’s so stupid about the whole magic thing . . . You spend twenty years learning the spell that makes nude virgins appear in your bedroom, and then you’re so poisoned by quicksilver fumes and half-blind from reading old grimoires that you can’t remember what happens next.

Death, on Discworld, is a character in his own right, and throughout the series is recognizable by always speaking IN BLOCK CAPITALS.

Death, insofar as it was possible in a face with no movable features, looked surprised. RINCEWIND? . . .WHY ARE YOU HERE?

‘Um, why not?’ said Rincewind.

I WAS SURPRISED THAT YOU JOSTLED ME, RINCEWIND. FOR I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THEE THIS VERY NIGHT.

‘Oh no, not—’

Death sat in His garden, running a whetstone along the edge of His scythe. It was already so sharp that any passing breeze that blew across it was sliced smoothly into two puzzled zephyrs.

‘Run away and leave Hrun with that thing?’ Twoflower said.

Rincewind looked blank. ‘Why not?’ he said. ‘It’s his job.’

‘But it’ll kill him!’

‘It could be worse,’ said Rincewind.

‘What?’

‘It could be us,’ Rincewind pointed out logically.

‘We’ve strayed into a zone with a high magical index,’ Rincewind said. ‘Don’t ask me how. Once upon a time a really powerful magic field must have been generated here, and we’re feeling the after-effects.’

‘You don’t understand!’ screamed the tourist, above the terrible noise of the wingbeats. ‘All my life I’ve wanted to see dragons!’

‘From the inside?’ shouted Rincewind.

‘You’re your own worst enemy, Rincewind,’ said the sword.

‘Bet?’ he said wearily.

‘Well,’ said the voice. ‘You see, one of the disadvantages of being dead is that one is released as it were from the bonds of time and therefore I can see everything that has happened or will happen, all at the same time except that of course I now know that Time does not, for all practical purposes, exist.’

‘That doesn’t sound like a disadvantage,’ said Twoflower.

‘You don’t think so? Imagine every moment being at one and the same time a distant memory and a nasty surprise and you’ll see what I mean.’

I’d rather be a slave than a corpse.

Plants on the Disc, while including the categories known commonly as annuals, . . . and perennials, . . . also included a few rare reannuals which, because of an unusual four-dimensional twist in their genes, could be planted this year to come up last year. The vul nut vine was particularly exceptional in that it could flourish as many as eight years prior to its seed actually being sown. Vul nut wine was reputed to give certain drinkers an insight into the future which was, from the nut’s point of view, the past. Strange but true.

‘We know all about you, Rincewind the magician. You are a man of great cunning and artifice. You laugh in the face of Death. Your affected air of craven cowardice does not fool me.’ It fooled Rincewind.

Impoverished in an Embarrassment of Riches

The problems with selecting the best Pratchett quotes are that no one agrees on which are the best and there are too many to include them all. So while there aren't any bad Pratchett quotes, it's annoying to find your favorites aren't included in this compilation.

As just one example, the selections from "Soul Music" omit both the "felonious monk" pun - maybe the best pun in Pratchett - and "we're on a mission from Glod." I mean, reasonable minds can differ, but what can Briggs have been thinking? Maybe that's the best way to describe the problem with this book: what was Stephen Briggs thinking? Which is why I give this effort only two stars, the lowest rating I've given any Pratchett-related product. And it goes deeper than that. Many of the quotes in this compilation are only amusing in context. Lifted from context, they can be a little flat. So who is this written for? Folks who haven't read the books will be bewildered, unamused and disappointed. Hard core fans will disagree with and be annoyed by the selections. It's hard to see the target audience.

I respect Mr. Briggs' dramatizations of Pratchett's novels, and his various editions of "Discworld Companion." But this effort falls flat. Notably, it does not contain an introduction from Pratchett, unlike some of the other non-canon books. Perhaps that omission is a comment all by itself.

The bottom line: read the books. Read all the books. They are a lot more fun, and you can decide for yourself what's witty and wise. Recommended only for those who want to keep their Pratchett libraries complete.

Both witty and wise!

Ah, Terry Pratchett. What an amazing fellow! I've had the immense joy of meeting him on two occasions and found him to be wonderfuly warm and entertaining. Very much worth all the praise he gets for his writing.

The best of these writings are culled together into this book. It's a collection of quotes and scenes from the various Discworld novels (including the "kids" books, but leaving out the short stories). It's a fairly comprehensive book, though I'm sure everyone will likely think their particular favorite is under-represented (THREE PAGES?! That's all that Small Gods gets?! WHAT THE HECK?!). You will likely also notice that some of your favorite quotes or scenes are not in this book (ie: the "Elves are..." bit from Lords and Ladies).

But beyond that, this is a very nice, well put-together compilation of some of the greatest... er... things... of the Discworld. It even features an index where you can look up lines from all your favorite characters.

Though far from complete, this is a worthwhile purchase at a very reasonable price, and who knows? If enough of his Discheads (not a word you want to make a typo on), buy this up, maybe we'll be treated to volume two?

Great fun for Pratchett fans!

There's not much to say about this book, aside from "buy a copy." Anyone who loves Terry's Discworld enjoys his humour and wit. Having what are arguably all the best lines from each book in one handy reference is great, since it means you can laugh your way through the development of the series in an hour or two. It's also handy if you're looking for a particular line and don't know what page it was on in the original book.

My favourite, of course, is:
Cuius testiculos habes, habeas cardia et cerebellum.

Powerful and intense....

Five months. It's been five long months since Detective Rebecca Montgomery's little sister, Danielle, went missing. Five months in which the crime has haunted Rebecca as she has badgered fellow officers for any hint, any clue, as to who kidnapped her sister and left her blood in a motel room. Now, Rebecca has pushed things too far and finds herself reassigned to the Cold Case Squad. Her first case involves arson and the skeletal remains of a body entombed in the walls of the Imperial Theatre. But why is Diego Galvan so interested in the crime scene? Just what are his ties to nefarious characters such as Hunter Cavanaugh and Joseph Rivera? Meanwhile, more women are disappearing... Rebecca is going to face the toughest case of her life.

Jordan Dane blazes onto the scene with an incredibly powerful and intense book! NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM is one of those books that is guaranteed to wring emotions out of the reader. There were scenes in which I was furious beyond words with a particular character and later, that same character could leave me in tears.

NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM is multilayered. On one hand, it's a fantastic suspense thriller. The tension builds and builds until certain scenes will leave the reader with chill bumps. However, the story is much deeper than just that. NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM is a powerful story of redemption. Many of the characters, not just the hero and heroine, are flawed or make mistakes, but Jordan Dane shows that moment in which redemption is granted. Jordan Dane brings out that humanity in her characters, that side that shows the characters aren't flat or one dimensional but rather that the characters are like real people- sometimes deeply flawed but still struggling to find their own sense of peace.

NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM also brings to light a very dark crime, one that is simply evil. The descriptions are quite graphic and even a bit eerie as Jordan Dane paints some horrifically vivid pictures of this appalling crime. NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM is a tough read emotionally, but is well worth each and every moment.

Great Debut Novel

Jordan Dane hits a solid homerun with her debut novel, NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM. The book is marked as romantic suspense, but the accent is on suspense, with clearly defined characters, a taut plot, and forensic and police terminology that will satisfy the armchair crime scene investigators looking for a new buzz.

The novel's pacing is frantic, the prose pared down and swift, the love scenes torrid, and the bad guys as creepy and evil as anyone would ever want. I had a good time blazing through this book. It offers a lot of excitement and twists, as well as the San Antonio background that I'd recently visited. The scenes along the historic riverwalk really jumped out at me.

I liked Detective Rebecca "Becca" Montgomery right out of the blocks. She's cut from the same larger-than-life cloth that a lot of action/suspense heroes are cut from, but she wears it well. I liked the fact that she was tough, independent, and good in a fight, though that isn't what most romance heroines are noted for. However, more and more young women in our world are getting that way - including familiarity with the martial arts - and I think Becca presents a good role model in several respects.

Dane grabs our attention immediately in the beginning with the short action piece, then segues smoothly into Becca's story. Still reeling with the guilt and pain from her younger sister's disappearance months ago, Becca is pulled off Dani's investigation and placed on a cold case assignment. Along the way she's hauled into an investigation involving the body of a young woman that was bricked up in a recently burned-down movie theater.

While at the theater crime scene, Becca crosses paths with Diego Galvan, who quickly proves he's more than he seems. Diego is a strong lead that easily holds his own with Becca, and he's a man hiding a lot of secrets.

Real life has to be squashed almost into sound bytes in a novel to keep the pacing up, and Dane masters that art easily. Her strength lies in the plotting, which has enough twists and turns to keep most readers guessing or second-guessing which path she's going to take.

With the meteoric pacing of Becca's investigation, the budding relationship with Diego sometimes gets overshadowed, but I found myself accepting the fact that the author would handle it. My main attention focused on Becca's pursuit of the bad guys and who everyone really was. The headlong storyline made it almost impossible to let the relationship breathe, but I think it'll be satisfying to romance fans.

However, the suspense, action, and detailed police knowledge should have fans of Tami Hoag and Lisa Jackson picking up Dane's books as well.

Dane scored a great deal with her publisher. Over the next three months, three of her novels will be released. NO ONE LEFT TO TELL comes out next, followed by NO ONE LIVES FOREVER. Although they sound like a series, all of them feature different heroines and heroes.

Pick up Jordan Dane's novels even if you don't have time to read them now. They're perfect beach books, though you may be more tense lying in the sun and lawn chair than you'd planned on being!

Detective Rebecca "Becca" Montgomery has been in a state of emotional limbo since her younger sister, Dani, disappeared five months prior. To get Becca off the case's head investigator, Lieutenant Arturo Santiago (her boss and friend) sends her to investigate the body found in the ashes of a recently burned down theater. Upon arriving at the fire scene Becca scans the by-standers for anything odd. (One man stood out from everyone else and she makes a mental note to have someone check out the handsome guy and his car tags.) The body found has already been reduced to a skeleton. There is no clothing, but an expensive locket is found at the feet. The body had been bricked into the theater wall, near the stage, during the last reconstruction. Sam Hastings, the team leader for the crime-scene technicians could tell the person had been a young female. The scratch marks within the brick tomb clearly shows that the lady had been buried alive. Becca's duty will be more difficult than normal since the clues prove that someone has been missing a daughter or sister, just like her, with no idea if the girl were alive.

It is not long before mystery man's identity is known. Diego Galvan is one of the top men working for Hunter Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh is a high profile business man. He is as dirty as they come, but no one can ever prove anything. If Diego is working for Cavanaugh, he can't be good and this makes Becca wonder why he was at a fire scene. Diego makes contact with Becca, claiming that he was only giving her warning about Cavanaugh. Yet the man never comes right out and tells how he is connected to Cavanaugh. Diego neither admits his boss is in any way connected to the body, nor that his boss is not. One thing is for sure, anytime Diego is near Becca, her knees go weak and she yearns for things out of her reach.

Diego Galvan hates Cavanaugh. But there is one person he hates even more and this is Matt Brogan, Cavanaugh's muscle man. Diego has to be very careful due to the fact that Brogan keeps an extremely close eye on him. Yet Diego cannot stop himself from warning the lovely detective about his boss. Once he meets Becca face-to-face, Diego is fascinated and unable to stay away. Feeding Becca information could easily get him killed; or worse, get her killed. One way or another, Diego is determined to bring Cavanaugh to justice. But is the price too high?

***** I am unable to tell more in the synopsis without totally giving away some vital clues and information. I can say that Cavanaugh has more than one shady business going on. Brogan knows most, if not all, of Cavanaugh's business dealings (legal and illegal). Yet Brogan is not very intelligent. He can't get his mind off of killing Diego someday. The body's identified early on and Becca must contact family, anyone last with the deceased...the normal stuff. But again, I can't go into more detail than that.

Author Jordan Dane has set a very strong foundation for the "NO ONE" trilogy. Rest assured that this IS a stand-alone story. All major loose ends are tied. Whether you are a fan of Romantic Suspense or Crime Scene Thrillers you will not be disappointed. There are some bedroom sections, but not enough to turn off male readers. I have never read this author before now, but I will definitely be keeping my eye on her. If Jordan Dane's writing stays this good, I see wonderful things in her future. Excellent! *****
