Era of bad feelings and good results.
By Richard I. Pervo
in 1789 the U.S. was anarchic and in financial difficulty. How the new constitution would work and if it would survive were far from certain. M. ably tells the story of how the country was formed. Fortunately, the Federalists pushed for a strong central government. Hamilton was, of course, the leading proponent of ideas. As an organizer and plotter he was extremely inept. The book allows the author the leisure to describe those early developments in detail.
among the details is the unfettered vitriol of the press. there were two fox news channels, one for each of the emerging parties. neither valued truth or even its most distant relatives.
the growth of parties was a major factor in improving voter turnout, which was low.
The Federalists turned the paper constitution into a manageable system--and then expired from their own elitism. We can, however, be glad that they had their day. Amateur historians who wish to understand U.S. history will benefit from this book.

Grade 7 Up—This worthy collection of brief poems offers an array of teen voices, all participants in WritersCorps workshops in the Bronx, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. Ngoc Minh Nguyen's "Homesickness" is particularly strong: "Let me become wind/to fly with the kite of childhood." Other poems capture a slice of teenage life, such as riding the bus to ballet class in Annie Yu's "Saturdays" and Kenneth Mozee, Jr.'s "Summer," which evokes the quicksilver delights of the season. Some dazzle through stark simplicity, such as Jaquan Clements's "Middle-School Haiku" and Sarah Verghese's "Questions Beyond Answers." The raw emotion expressed in Shekuanzie Dorch's "Struggles on Living in a Shelter" makes an indelible impression. An essay by WritersCorps teacher Michelle Matz adds a vivid picture of her students and their lives. This fine collection should inspire creativity and resonate with teens who find their own hopes, fears, and dreams eloquently voiced in the works of these young poets.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

This anthology from WritersCorps incorporates poems written by teens from three major cities across the United States: San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and the Bronx.

These poems aren't all delightful with happy endings. They talk of teen issues and troubles; most deal with immigrating to the U.S. and the differences between here and their homes.

With a foreword by Sherman Alexie, this small anthology book of teen poets quickly guides the reader through real struggles and dilemmas that teenagers face.

TELL THE WORLD is an eye-opening book of poetry that is sure to enlighten any who read it.

Coretta Scott, by Ntozake Shange

Walking many miles to school in the dusty road, young Coretta knew, too well, the unfairness of life in the segregated south.

A yearning for equality began to grow.

Together with Martin Luther King, Jr., she gave birth to a vision and a journey—with dreams of freedom for all.

This extraordinary union of poetic text by Ntozake Shange and monumental artwork by Kadir Nelson captures the movement for civil rights in the United States and honors its most elegant inspiration, Coretta Scott.

Starred Review. Grade 4–9—Poetic language paired with powerful images makes this biography/history of the Civil Rights Movement a moving, provocative read-aloud. Young Coretta and her siblings solemnly "walked all/of five miles to/the nearest colored school/in the darkness/with the dew dampening/their feet." A close-up of the stoic children as the "white school bus/left a/funnel of dust/on their faces" reveals the hurt they already knew. The peaceful, prayerful profiles of Coretta and Martin juxtaposed against a stained-glass church window provide a soothing contrast—"they prayed together/found joy/and were married." Later came the sit-ins and the marches; "hundreds then thousands/white and black/marched/in Alabama/Carolina/Georgia/and Chicago." Until "a quarter of a million at the March on Washington/peacefully singing 'we shall overcome'/and listening to the words/that would inspire a nation." A bird's-eye view of the crowd looks like a garden of flowers surrounding the Reflecting Pool. Yet, despite the song and solidarity, "things nature never intended/a child to see/haunted them…." The book ends with several spreads of marchers and singers accompanied by an excerpt from the traditional gospel song "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Round." Nelson's stirring oil paintings on plywood are all full-spread with large, easy-to-share images. An author's note provides a summary of the subject's life and of the Civil Rights Movement, though there are no credits or references to the songs. Every library will want copies of this lyrical tribute to an elegant woman and the era she represents.—Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Unflinching verse and elegant imagery combine in a powerful, evocative, picture-book portrait of Coretta Scott King. As stated on the cover, Shange uses poetry to recount Coretta Scott’s life, from her childhood to her marriage with Martin Luther King, Jr. On the final page, the author offers a linear, prose biography, adding context to her more abstract references in the poetry. Omitting punctuation and capitalization, Shange assembles her simple words into a whole that reflects both the facts of Scott’s story and her humanity. Nelson’s accompanying paintings are luminous and reverent, and as much as they recall his distinct style in books such as Carole Boston Weatherford’s Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (2006), there is something of Norman Rockwell here, too, in the straightforward compositions and profound dignity of the American spirit on display. Concise back matter notwithstanding, this is not a biography of fact and reporting. Instead, poet and painter have joined forces to offer an indelible, emotional expression of the strength, beauty, and joy of one woman’s character. Grades K-3. --Thom Barthelmess

Review
“Poetic language paired with powerful images make this biography/history of the Civil Rights Movement a moving, provacative read–aloud. Every library will want copies of this lyrical tribute to an elegant woman and the era she represents.” (School Library Journal (starred review))

“Nelson’s jacket portrait, monumental and tender at the same time, sets the tone for this intimate picture biography. Shange’s rhythmic lines and formal syntax roll like waves carrying readers on a soul–stirring ride through Coretta’s coming of age in the Civil Rights Movement.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Poet and painter have joined forces to offer an indelible, emotional expression of the strength, beauty, and joy of one woman’s character.” (Booklist (starred review))

Sing a Poem of the Dream
By a gentle sound
Now what makes this book unique is that it carries the sound of poem, spiritual, song as one might associate with this woman that stood and held the hand of a leader, two people together taking on a journey to place we can call today a Promised Land. A place where dreams are born into being.
It tells in a hushed calm about where she started, Coretta who loved to sing, and then like a brush might sweep across a canvas, it crosses us over, over into a kind of melodic telling of our national prayer. One that speaks of better days, all children at a table, concern, caring and mighty truths. A hope that all people might one day enjoy the prosperity and the chance as well as the reality of a fair opportunity to exist in a country that wrote creeds this way, creeds it often does not fulfill, not yet, not without struggle, strife and difficulty. Born in the darkness and beauty of a people that built a great nation. But a people that it kept down, who in turn kept it moving forward, in part because of woman like Coretta Scott.

The book is beautifully, largely, inspiring, and boldly illustrated with pictures that do remind me of the WPA and that so fits, that illustrated, painted style fits the telling of this poem. Nothing better would carry the feel of the artists than those of that time in the last century who raised the awareness of the necessity of the arts, the power of the arts, and the potential of the arts to speak in the ways of the heart path. Especially in a time of need. Like this time. Of the soul journey. As song does waft to form into our being the music of being heard.

I hate to tred my path alone, so I will share two personal responses to this book. The first involves my own mother. My mother became involved with the issues of treating others fairly and in my youth, in the 1960's onward she connected with the NAACP among other groups. At some point in West Virginia she shared a lunch or maybe two luncheons, as she is correcting me, with Mrs. King. Coming home the first time (and I would date this to the early 80's) I recall her talking to me of Mrs. King's courage, calm, solid determination, thoughtfulness in answering her. She could have left the national stage, raised her children, remarried, she could have and many would have been afraid, locked herself in fear, and wisely chosen to be outside the fray anymore, she had given enough. But to know her, or to meet her, is to meet the mettle of this couple. Neither stepped away. Both went where they were asked to go, asked to fight for justice. It is exactly what it is. The content of their character. And no one could miss that. My mother related this clearly, and handed me an autographed book that she treasured getting. For me. I recall her telling me that she felt Mrs. King like a rock. I believe this was how she might have functioned for her family. As the ground we walk and tread, knowing a path and a way. I read her auto-biography a powerful, inspiring work. It helped me to build my being. The one part of me that teaches in poverty areas and must constantly each day bring a sincere understanding to the work I do, and a worthwhile heart as well. This book too, honors that.

The second thing I might share is the reaction today to reading this to my students. It is not a long text. They were reverent, hush, calm. They recognized places like the Washington Monument. They connected through recent events at the Inaugural and our reading about President Obama and Dr. King. They felt value in the words. They understood notions of separate schools and how we are traveling on a road ever working to be more just. To improve upon the past. They saw the idea of "process" and "progress." And how do I know? They told me these things. They had an understanding that the spouse of a leader like Dr. King must be dedicated and indeed spun of cloth very valuable and precious.

So, I think, if you would give this to a classroom, to a library, to a school, to a student, you have done a very good thing, it will aid in the work we are really here to do.

This is one of the BEST read-alouds for parents, teachers and librarians. The pictures are magnificent, and I have read this to my 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade classes over the past two weeks, for MLK day. A beautiful companion to "Martin's Big Words," as the pictures complement each other. Highly recommended!

Aesthetics and Morals in the Philosophy of David Hume (Routledge Studies in Eighteenth Century Philosophy), by Timothy M Costelloe

The book has two aims. First, to examine the extent and significance of the connection between Hume's aesthetics and his moral philosophy; and, second, to consider how, in light of the connection, his moral philosophy answers central questions in ethics.

The first aim is realized in chapters 1-4. Chapter 1 examines Hume's essay "Of the Standard of Taste" to understand his search for a "standard" and how this affects the scope of his aesthetics. Chapter 2 establishes that he treats beauty in nature and art and moral beauty as similar in kind, and applies the conclusions about his aesthetics to his moral thought. Chapter 3 solves a puzzle to which this gives rise, namely, how individuals both accept general standards that they also contravene in the course of aesthetic and moral activity. Chapter 4 takes up the normative aspect of Hume's approach by understanding moral character through his view of moral beauty.

The second aim of the book is realized in chapters 5-7 by entertaining three objections against Hume's moral philosophy. First, if morality is an immediate reaction to the beauty of vice and the deformity of virtue, why is perfect virtue not the general condition of every human individual? Second, if morality consists of sentiments that arise in the subject, how can moral judgments be objective and claim universal validity? And third, if one can talk of "general standards" governing conduct, how does one account for the diversity of moral systems and their change over time? The first is answered by showing that like good taste in aesthetics, 'right taste' in morals requires that the sentiments are educated; the second, by arguing against the view that Hume is a subjectivist and a relativist, and the third (chapter 6), by showing that his approach contains a view of progress left untouched by any personal prejudices Hume himself might harbor. The book concludes in chapter 7 by showing how Hume's view of philosophy affects the scope of any normative ethics.

Review

"Timothy Costelloe sets two tasks for himself in his thought-provoking Aesthetics and Morals in the Philosophy of David Hume: to make a contribution to our understanding of Hume’s aesthetics, and then to use that contribution to throw light on Hume’s theory of morals. Costelloe is a graceful writer with an impressive grasp of the whole of Hume’s corpus. He is consistently engaging, his interpretations are consistently suggestive, and the comparisons that his powerful grasp of Hume’s writings allow him to make are consistently striking." -- James Shelley, Department of Philosophy, Auburn University

From Publishers Weekly
Memoirist Kilmer-Purcell (I Am Not Myself These Days) tells the sad tale of wannabe TV star Jayson Blocher, a suburban high school student in the 1980s Midwest. After writing and starring in his home-shot, gay coming-of-age soap, Dallasty! Jayson sets his sights on Hollywood. A rogue Dallasty! screening sets off pandemonium, so Jayson's alcoholic mother sends Jayson to his father, which leads to a seamy romp through the gay semicelebrity scene of New York and L.A as AIDS emerges. And when Jayson actually does get his big Hollywood break, it is no surprise that his connection to his mother deteriorates further. Kilmer-Purcell certainly has interesting and tough-minded things to say about being young, gay and celebrity-obsessed in the 1980s, but the characters aren't strong enough to withstand the rollicking plot. Review
“A balls-out joyride through eighties pop culture that enlightens as much as it exhilarates. As always, Kilmer-Purcell’s astringent wit is nicely tempered by his obvious sympathy for human frailty.” (Armistead Maupin, New York Times bestselling author of Michael Tolliver Lives)

“Josh Kilmer-Purcell is funny funny funny, one of the funniest young writers in America. In Candy Everybody Wants, he trains his insightfully sardonic eye on the world of 80’s pop culture, showing the roots that made us a nation of Britneys, American Idols, and Obamamaniacs.” (James Frey, author of Bright Shiny Morning)

“Josh Kilmer-Purcell has created rich and memorable characters that emerge from the tumultuous landscape of the 1970’s. Jayson Blocher is the Holden Caufield for a new generation who is thrust in to a Little Miss Sunshine family in the early 1980’s.” (Dr. Drew Pinsky, author of The Mirror Effect)

“A genuine comic novel filled with big laughs, Candy Everybody Wants is entertainingly out-of-left-field yet remains rooted in reality. With his second book, Kilmer-Purcell has avoided the dreaded sophomore slump. We can’t wait to see what he’ll come up with next.” (Myspace.com)

Fasten your seat belt, and put phasers on STUN-ning!
By Bob Lind
Reading kind of like a VH1-style "I Love the 80's" special on steroids, "Candy Everyone Wants" is a madcap, extremely "over-the-top" story of a rather eventful year in the life of Jayson Blocher, a joyously flamboyantly gay boy from a small town in Wisconsin. A series of events lead to his leaving home to go to Manhattan and live with his estranged father, who runs an escort agency for men who want to spend time with Broadway chorus boys. Jason meets Devlin, a slightly older boy who starred in a popular sitcom and whom Jason had a longtime crush on, and he gets to sample a bit of fame by appearing in a popular series of television commercials. Subsequent events have both Jayson and Devlin on the lam and living on the streets of Chelsea, while his family and friends make an unexpected visit and Jayson waits to hear if he will be co-starring in a sitcom of its own. Throw in a few homophobic bible-thumpers, a kidnapping, a betrayal from someone whom he thought was a friend, and a realization that the life of an actor is not always a bed of roses, and you have a rollicking good time of a novel, written in a fast-paced, very witty manner that can cause a bit of "whiplash" whenever you try to put the book down for a while. So don't put it down ... it's a fun, light read. Five stars out of five.

Very Gay, Very 80's, Very Funny
By Rachel Kramer Bussel
This novel goes from gay and ridiculous to even more gay and more ridiculous. Josh Kilmer-Purcell manages to write a book that really couldn't be more different than his memoir. Jayson Blocher is like an amalgamation of every over-the-top child star ever, but gay. Every character her is a caricature to the nth degree, but all so carefully crafted that you fall for them and their madness anyway. Plus, oh, prostitution, drugs, crime, scandal, pregnancy, disabiity, crazy names and so much more. It's like the entire book is written in rainbow capital letters.

As a New Yorker, getting insight into a very different SoHo than the one of designer shops and the Apple store was a delight. Kilmer-Purcell manages to weave this social landscape into his otherwise quite fantastical tale that'll have you wishing Dallasty! were a real show you could Tivo.

If I had to summarize it in one word, it would be gay. No, make that Gay, in all the best senses of the word. I'd recommend to anyone who grew up worshiping at the altar of their TV screen and hoping one day it would come to life.

If you loved the memoir, you won't like the novel
By NE Reader
I adored I Am Not Myself These Days. It's like a different writer created this dreadful "novel." To me, it was quite sophomoric and not even remotely witty. Silly, perhaps, without a shred of charm to it. JK-P should have kept this hidden in his sock drawer.

Storytelling Organizational Practices: Managing in the quantum age, by David M. Boje

Once upon a time the practice of storytelling was about collecting interesting stories about the past, and converting them into soundbite pitches. Now it is more about foretelling the ways the future is approaching the present, prompting a re-storying of the past. Storytelling has progressed and is about a diversity of voices, not just one teller of one past; it is how a group or organization of people negotiates the telling of history and the telling of what future is arriving in the present.

With the changes in storytelling practices and theory there is a growing need to look at new and different methodologies. Within this exciting new book, David M. Boje develops new ways to ask questions in interviews and make observations of practice that are about storytelling the future. This, after all, is where management practice concentrates its storytelling, while much of the theory and method work is all about how the past might recur in the future.

Storytelling Organizational Practices takes the reader on a journey: from looking at narratives of past experience through looking at living stories of emergence in the present to looking at how the future is arriving in ways that prompts a re-storying of the past.

Review

‘David Boje’s storytelling imagination burns with the fierce energy of a volcano generating more insights in a few pages than others display in whole volumes. Whether revisiting St George and the dragon or having dinner with Zygmunt Bauman, Boje delights, provokes, subverts and resurrects. His latest book is a must for every true lover of story, narrative and antenarrative!’ -Yiannis Gabriel, School of Management, University of Bath, UK

‘David Boje is one of the most innovative thought leaders on organizational change and narrative methods. His expository style is equally fluent regardless of the context at hand, be it in the trenches of a distribution warehouse or the ethereal realms of philosophies and life worlds.’ - Nikhilesh Dholakia, University of Rhode Island, USA

‘The brothers James would be delighted with Storytelling: James because of the weight given to the narrative and Henry because of the central place of pragmatist theory in this new David Boje book. Both would be happy to see the two united within a field unknown to them, which are organization theory and the enlightened placing of pragmatic storytelling in a new era. The contemporary readers, organizational theoreticians and practitioners alike, will be enriched by its broad historical perspective and the rich imagination of its author.’ - Barbara Czarniawska, Professor, Managing Overflow, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

‘David Boje has written an incredible book. Writing from the perspective of philosophical pragmatism, Boje has laid out the theoretical underpinnings of organizational storytelling. It is a must read for those interested in organizations from a deeper perspective.’ – Dr Ian I. Mitroff, Mitroff Crisis Management

‘David Boje's work makes an outstanding contribution to the study of organizations. His distinct perspective has powerfully influenced the way in which researchers engage with and understand organizations, and this book is no exception. In Storytelling Organizational Practices Boje provides a comprehensive analysis of the various ways in which storytelling is used and interpreted within the organization: beautifully written and engaging.’ - Heather Hopfl, University of Essex, UK

‘Dr David Boje takes storytelling to a stratospheric level in this book; giving his readers an exciting, thought-provoking, and extreme depth of understanding of what storytelling is really all about. He leaves ‘no stone unturned’ in his profound and gifted way of dissecting and explaining the variety and complexity of storytelling. No book has ever before been published that has given us such a rich and diverse understanding of what storytelling is all about, as does this marvellous and monumental work. David has created a masterwork.’ - Ed Breeding, Painter/Writer/Documentary filmmaker, USA

In this book Boje prompts us to see the open-ended nature of possible futures as an invitation to re-story the past and re-imagine the present. The academic formula of quantum age management allows Boje to notice a broad spectrum of contemporary storytelling organizational practices. He systematically rejects the mainstream conformism of professional bureaucracies and moves away from Academies of Management, via International Academies of Business Disciplines towards Standing Conferences on Management and Organizational Inquiry (sc’MOI) and towards open sources of responsible civic conviviality’s.’ - Slawek Magala, Rotterdam School of Management, Boje’s successor as editor in chief of Journal of Organizational Change Management, Netherlands

‘We all love a good story! We all tell stories all the time! No-one tells as good a story about our storytelling - to ourselves and to each other - as does David Boje. In a compelling story about what we tell each other as explanation, truth, and possible futures, Boje reminds us, "lest we forget", that the story about one set of interests may over-ride all others - but that it need not be so. In a world that currently supports the interest of the 1% over the needs of the other 99% we might bet that another ante is possible.’ - Maria Humphries, Associate Professor, Waikato Management School, University of Waikato, New Zealand

‘In this ground breaking book, David Boje combines elements from such seemingly disparate areas as philosophy, quantum physics and Shamanism. He describes how storytelling can and has been used in good and bad as well as ethical and unethical ways by organizations to help them make sense of past events in the organization; including organizational culture and history. Students and professors, as well as the interested organizational reader, will find the book to be challenging, fascinating, and imminently practical.’ - Jerry Biberman, Professor Emeritus, University of Scranton, USA

‘Here is the Boje book we didn’t know we were waiting for. David emerges as a quantum weaver, applying his deep insight and astounding creativity to connect the strands of theory – his own and those of others – with great clarity in his most approachable work. It is punctuated with significant examples, important stories, and pauses for reflection and action. David engages us with his ideas about what is happening now, and what is possible going forward. He takes us on an inside-out-outside-in journey filled with passion and integrity. If you care about people, stories, organizations, and their dynamics, read this seminal book.’ – Dr. Jo Tyler, Associate Professor at Penn State University, Storyteller, and Mosaicist

‘More than anyone else, perhaps, David Boje has sensitized us to the importance of narratives, narrative plurivocality, and storytelling in organizations. In this hugely insightful book, possibly his best so far, Boje goes further: he brings storytelling to the quantum (or post-modern) era – the era of uncertainty, indeterminacy, and complexity. This book is an insightful scholarly story about organizational stories – a masterful achievement.’ - Haridimos Tsoukas, The Columbia Ship Management Professor of Strategic Management, University of Cyprus and Professor of Organization Studies, University of Warwick, UK

‘David Boje is arguably the leading scholar in organizational storytelling. In this comprehensive new book he synthesizes and extends the storytelling literature to speak of restorying the future. This book breaks new ground by proposing alternate methodologies to explore how many storytellers, not just omniscient managers, may impact alternate future courses for organizations. A must read for anyone interested in storytelling, or simply in the mechanics by which managers choose organizational futures, and the moral hazard this entails for society.’ - Usha C. V. Haley, Professor of Management, West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA

‘Storytelling matters! David Boje challenges us to question what we know about storytelling providing us with a compelling and wide-ranging account on theory and method for a sea-change in narrative research’ - Anna Linda Musacchio Adorisio, Copenhagen Business School and author of Storytelling in Organizations

‘David Boje knows everything about narratives and storytelling. This new book presents different approaches to storytelling and takes quantum storytelling to the next level. The book will certainly help and inspire both those who want to know what storytelling is all about and those looking for new innovative ideas and methods. There is so much to learn from this highly original package..’ – Eero Vaara, Hanken School of Economics, Finland

‘David Boje’s work merges us into the core of the storytelling methods and narratives based on interviews about organizational practices. Although Boje focuses on businesses and organizations, his book’s larger scope also addresses situations of human interaction. If storytelling of organizations is undoubtedly interested in the past stories and the present time practices, it is also oriented on the future stories, the antenarrative. Boje emphasizes on the fact that the future is not an extrapolation of the past but is rather a bet, a prediction.’ - Professor Henri Savall, Socio-Economic Institute of Firms and Organizations, France

the vanguard of research in storytelling
By R. Saylors
David Boje presents the future of the future in storytelling. His research from a decade ago is just now entering the mainstream research. This book represents what will be the vanguard of research in storytelling. If you are interested in gaining insight into storytelling in organizations then this is the book for you.

The unfortunate truth, though, is that there will be 10000 vampire-porn books sold for every copy of this book sold. In a better world we would all be inclined to grow as people, challenge our assumptions, and move into a deeper understanding of the human condition. In a better world this would be the most popular book on the shelves.

Allow yourself to be challenged. Buck the trend of knowledge-decemination written for 12 year olds. Allow yourself to absorb complex thought... and when you're on the fifth wikipedia-tab trying to understand what you just read: realize that you're becoming a more incisive person because of it.

Telling Stories
By M.T.Humphries
The arrival of "Storytelling Organizational Practices" in my work as researcher and teacher has been a fabulous way to articulate those 'other stories' that I find so compelling but that are so often dismissed from the conversations I wish to have. This valuing of other stories, this sense of holding back from petrifying dominant stories, is found useful and inspiring also by a growing group of researchers in my ken - researchers who have also struggled to find a way to tell their own stories or the stories of their research participants in ways that are essential for a vibrant academy.

From Publishers Weekly
Actor and producer Wagner begins this engaging memoir by recalling his childhood fascination with movies and the Hollywood community. Determined to become a part of that world, in 1942, at age 12, he worked as a golf caddy, struggling to make contact with those who could help him. As an 18-year-old Fox contract player, he got a foothold with minor roles: I wasn't very good in this period, but I was diligent. Soon he scored with Prince Valiant in 1954, and A Kiss Before Dying, thus beginning a six-decade career in theater, television series and more than 100 movies. His rule of thumb: Find smart people and listen to them. Along the way, he realized friends and family were equally as important as show business, and he writes with fondness and humor about his close friendships with David Niven and others while painting a backdrop of Hollywood in transition. As for the women in Wagner's life, he details one-night stands, his four-year affair with Barbara Stanwyck (who was twice his age) and his four marriages (twice to Natalie Wood). His love for Wood threads throughout, and his memory of her last night is chilling as he leads the reader step-by-step through her 1981 disappearance from their boat and the search for her body. Review
“Pieces of My Heart is a treasure. . . . Wagner’s portrait of [Natalie] Wood is adoring and poignant. . . . With admirable strength and honest self-awareness, Wagner makes plain that there’s much more to him than his handsome face.” (Washington Post)

“Mesmerizing” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Engaging” (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover

Robert J. Wagner opens his heart to share the romances, the drama, and the humor of an incredible life.

When he was a young boy growing up in Bel Air next door to a golf course, Robert Wagner saw Fred Astaire, Clark Gable, Randolph Scott, and Cary Grant playing golf together one morning—and it fueled his dream of becoming a movie star.

In Pieces of My Heart, Wagner offers a candid and deeply personal look at his life and career—his rise to stardom in the studiodominated Hollywood era of the 1950s; his relationship with mentors like Spencer Tracy and David Niven, and with friends like Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis; his decline and his resurrection. And he speaks from the heart of the women he loved: Barbara Stanwyck, a glamorous star twice his age; Marion Marshall, Jill St. John . . . and Natalie Wood. For the very first time he chronicles in great depth their extraordinary romance and bares his pain as he openly recounts its tragic end.

With color photographs and fascinating never-before-told tales and anecdotes, Pieces of My Heart is the heartfelt, remarkably revealing, and quintessentially American story of one of the great sons of Hollywood.

Oh, RJ -- be still my heart.
By D. Summerfield
I initially purchased Robert Wagner's autobiography because his late wife, Natalie Wood, is my favorite movie star. I wanted more insight into her personality. The book does have quite a bit about his two marriages with Natalie, and about the fading studio system in Hollywood in the fifties which brought them together. It also chronicles the devastation brought on by her untimely death by drowning. But this book is a surprisingly compelling portrait of a handsome, charismatic, approachable leading man who has been in the limelight for most of his life.

I really didn't know much about Robert Wagner when I started reading this book. I had seen most of his movies, and I liked his old television series "Hart to Hart" with Stefanie Powers. But I knew nothing of his personal life, or about his background. The depiction of his journey from young rebel to solid leading man to Hollywood icon is told here with great charm and in-depth self-examination.

Of course the big surprise is the revelation of his early romance with the much older Barbara Stanwyck when Wagner was first starting off in Hollywood -- she was twice his age and the relationship lasted four years! But there is fascinating information all through the book about Wagner's love affairs, his co-stars and his friendships with other Hollywood legends. He is especially lovely when writing about his current wife, Jill St. John, herself a sex symbol and Bond girl, who helped him get over Natalie Wood's death. I also like that he writes warmly about his close relationship with his children.

I recommend this book highly to film buffs and those who enjoy movie star biographies and memoirs. Robert Wagner comes across as a wonderful man, and one who is still sexy as all get-out.

UPDATE: This memoir mentions that Wagner and Wood travelled to London in 1976 to do Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" for Laurence Olivier. Natalie Wood played Maggie, Wagner played Brick and Olivier played Big Daddy. Wagner calls the production his "professional high point."

I just discovered that the production, along with four other plays directed by Olivier, is available on DVD in a collection called Laurence Olivier Presents. So for Natalie Wood fans who are longing to see her in something new, or for Wagner fans who would like to see him in a truly pithy dramatic role, here's your chance.

An inside view from an insider
By Fran Ishman
What a worthwhile book! Mr. Wagner has mentally stored a mountain-full of memories that he now shares with us. Wonderful details spanning many years give insight and humanity to people who, for many of us, have always seemed to be on another planet. There are surprises, for sure. I came away from the book "liking" most of these folks, and Mr. Wagner's love and respect for his cohorts is obvious. For those few for which he held disdain, it was for very good reasons. The fame and fortune gleaned from a lifetime in the film business do not seem to be his most treasured prizes at all -- but rather the friendships he amassed.

I found the workings of the Hollywood studio system as well as his transition to television -- and the differences between the two, to be quite interesting. He certainly was well established in both arenas.

The telling of his life story indicates to me that Mr. Wagner is a man of principle, a man with admirable values and a man of deep emotion. I am definitely not star struck, a groupie, or an autograph collector. But I think I would just like to be Robert Wagner's next door neighbor.

I encourage you to read this book. It's the old "I couldn't put it down" thing.

So readable and genuine
By baramarie
I had to give this a 5 star because it seemed so honest and genuinely
moving. At the end of the book, I have to say I LIKED Robert Wagner.
I think people he calls a friend are very lucky indeed. He seems to have
real values. Anyone who likes "star" bios will certainly not be disappointed with this book.

The Rise of the Fourth Reich: The Secret Societies That Threaten to Take Over America, by Jim Marrs

Throw out everything you think you know about history. Close the approved textbooks, turn off the corporate mass media, and whatever you do, don't believe anything you hear from the government—The Rise of the Fourth Reich reveals the truth about American power. In this explosive new book, the legendary Jim Marrs, author of the underground bestseller Rule by Secrecy, reveals the frighteningly real possibility that today the United States is becoming the Fourth Reich, the continuation of an ideology thought to have been vanquished more than a half century ago.

This concept may seem absurd to those who cannot see past the rose-colored spin, hype, and disinformation poured out daily by the media conglomerates—most of which are owned by the very same families and corporations who supported the Nazis before World War II. But as Marrs precisely explains, National Socialism never died, but rather its hideous philosophy is alive and active in modern America. Unfortunately, most people cannot understand the shadowy links between fascism and corporate power, the military, and our elected leaders.

While the United States helped defeat the Germans in World War II, we failed to defeat the Nazis. At the end of the war, ranking Nazis, along with their young and fanatical protégés, used the loot of Europe to create corporate front companies in many countries, including the United States of America. Utilizing their stolen wealth, men with Nazi backgrounds and mentalities wormed their way into corporate America, slowly buying up and consolidating companies into giant multinational conglomerates. Many thousands of other Nazis came to the United States under classified programs such as Project Paperclip. They brought with them miraculous weapon technology that helped win the space race but they also brought their insidious Nazi philosophy within our borders. This ideology based on the authoritarian premise that the end justifies the means—including unprovoked wars of aggression and curtailment of individual liberties—has gained an iron hold in the "land of the free and the home of the brave."

For the first time Jim Marrs has gathered compelling evidence that an effort has been underway for the past sixty years to bring a form of National Socialism to modern America, creating in essence a modern empire—or "Fourth Reich"!

THE SECRET WORLD OF THE NAZIs: THEN AND NOW!
By RBSProds
Four and a half CONTROVERSIAL Stars!! Disturbing, Fascinating, and Challenging. Easily the conspiracy book of the decade!! Revisionist history, international maniputalion on a gigantic level, Illuminati, 'Foo fighters', the greatest unsolved bank robbery in history, body doubles, and Solomon's treasure: all of this will gladden the hearts of conspiracy theorists, but there's lots here for everyone and much is disturbing. Mr Marrs' basic premise: some well-heeled Nazi's survived WW II, used their connections, as well as their scientific expertise and appropriated loot to promote rich lifestyles, and insinuate themselves into high tech corporations and governments. Worst still, Mr Marrs asserts that maybe some really big Nazi (a word derived from National Socialism) leaders had access to amazing technology and could have escaped with it. He feels we are now using some of their old tactics, discoveries, and philosophies to implement US policy based by the merging of government and corporations, to the detriment of individualism. Scary indeed when one considers which of the two is calling the shots. But can it be true? And then he goes into various shadowy European and American organizations who sought and are still seeking unconditional power and control through various business networks and governmental operations. He reveals Project Paperclip where the USA imported thousands of 'useful' former Nazis to the US with little or no knowledge by our citizens. Beyond this, Nazis set up front companies in Argentina, Sweden, Switzerland (more than 200 companies), Portugal, Spain, and Turkey, among others. One of the most fascinating chapters is called "Nazi Wonder Weapons" which is full of guided missiles, early television, plastics, the possibility of the A bomb, early computers, quantum mechanics, and high tech assertions that frankly are quite shocking. I'll let the reader discover the two biggest of the Nazi discoveries, as described by Mr Marrs. Did the Germans have nukes? And have world governments kept us in the dark about many well-known historical events?

Despite what some may feel about Mr Marrs' previous works, I do believe he's onto something with regard to the hidden Nazi history of world corporations, power, and political ideologies, especially with regard to 'war'. Big corporations, according to this book, have been forming non-political alliances that have been funding the war machines of opposing countries and alliances. The ties between world politics and big business are revealing: for example, Leon Trotsky was living on the grounds of Standard Oil in New Jersey, rent free, in 1917 just before returning to Russian to help depose the czar, with Wall Street bankers and wealthy Brits and Germans funding that Bolshevik triumph. Another stunning assertion is that "globalists" fearlessly funded and manipulated both sides of the overall conflict between communism and western nations for their own financial benefit from the very beginning, even to the point of determining who should "lose the war". And based on these successes, Mr Marrs says these globalists are now funding the new Nazi philosophy and rising activities of "the fourth reich". The influence of the "the ends justify the means" Illuminati, freemasonry, and even Yale's Skull and Bones are playing major roles in today's activities. Only in "Ratlines" does Mr Marrs falter, after building a case for the ruthlessness and inventiveness of the Nazis, he would have us believe various religious personnel could have actually denied the Nazis anything. There are also unflattering characterizations of Charles Lindbergh, John Foster Dulles, William Randolph Hearst, the Rockefellers, Pope Pius XII, Winston Churchill, Prescott Bush, Joseph P. Kennedy, IBM, ITT, Ford Motor Company, Standard Oil, and DuPont. This is a challenging book with a disturbing alternate historical version of the last 100 years: believe it or not!! Highly Recommended! Four and a half AMAZING stars!!

Entertaining and Regrettably NOT Unbelievable
By Andrew Kilian
I read this book in a weekend and couldn't bring myself to put it down. The case made by the author at first seems like fantastic fiction, but alarmingly, as the chapters begin to relate to events closer to current history you begin to feel the rug being pulled out from underneath you.

If I had a criticism it would be that, although the author convincingly shows how elements of Nazism splintered, survived, flourished, made inroads as well as became absorbed by various American institutions; he conflicts with his own argument stating that National Socialism is the danger, while simultaneously, Plutocratic Interests also are the danger. It can be followed that one begat the other, they developed along separate paths and intertwined at some later point. Marrs keeps citing that one is the issue, yet both are competing conspiracies or more likely one dominant and one subordinate.

I enjoyed this book immensely for it's odyssey on "what is wrong with America and how we got here", particularly for all the ground he covers. I think everyone should read this (at a minimum) just for the challenging ideas it presents. I felt it plugged up a lot of holes in my historical vocabulary.

Much is Excellent, But Open to Severe Criticisms
By David M. Dougherty
Author Marrs's premise that the US is rapidly becoming a fascist state is hardly open to question any more, but his pointing to Nazi Germany as the origin of this trend misses the mark. Nonetheless, this book is a valuable read for all, regardless of the reader's political persuasion or positioning on the left or right.

Unfortunately the author damages his work as early as in his Introduction with false facts. For example, on page 1 he states that the bodies of Mussolini and his mistress "were left hanging from lampposts." Actually they were hung by their heels from the canopy of a gasoline station in Milan. On page two, Hitler's remains were found by the Soviets, positive identification was made from dental records, and part of Hitler's skull was retained by Stalin as a war souvenir. The two pages about Hitler's possible escape are pure fantasy and at odds with documented history. Even his definition of terms is poor, for example the term "Nazi" is not a contraction from "National Socialist" but rather the first two syllables of "Nationalsozialismus" (one word) pronounced in German as Na-tsi (National is pronounced Na-tsi-oo-nal in four syllables). I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, the author plays fast and loose with some facts to spice up his theme when no spicing is needed, and such lack of historical scholarship calls his other facts into question.

Another example might be made of the Skull and Bones Society at Yale. Certainly this was an organization whose members were drawn into the Bilderbergs, Trilateral Commission and Council on Foreign Relations, but casting this college society as a fascist conspiracy group is like condemning the Boy Scouts or DeMolay for the evils some of their members bring about in later years.

Nonetheless, author Marr does identify the most terrifying secret group today that is likely to bring an end to American sovereignty -- the Bilderbergs (B), supported by their agents The Round Table in Europe, and the Trilateral Commission (TC) and the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) here in the US. These groups are well documented for wishing to end American national sovereignty, imposing global taxes, and wanting to reduce the American standard of living to come into line with the world's average. They have achieved the European Union, and their next step is to form a North American Union out of Canada, the US, and Mexico with a standard currency, the Amero. These programs are very far advanced, and the public needs to take action at this very late date. Marr correctly points out that private ownership of weapons in the US acts as a significant curb to these ambitions as does the history of individual freedom in the US.

Marr loses his way in attempting to pin the actions of these groups on Nazis or their influence. Like the Bolshevik revolutionaries, many of the individuals actively working to foster this new One World Order are Jewish (Kissinger immediately comes to mind) -- something that puts them at odds with Hitler's racial underpinning of his state. In addition, Hitler would have maintained his nation-state as the supreme body for world leadership -- today the One World Order types seek a Supra-National Socialist (or Supra-Nazi) world governing body, controlled by them through the management of the political process and public-private partnerships (PPPs). Marrs is correct in his descriptions of these PPP organizations and how the corporate and political worlds are managed by the globalists.

Marr correctly points out that Jimmy Carter was the first President to be catapulted from obscurity by the Trilateral Commission and the Bilderbergs by Zbigniew Brzezinski and David Rockefeller. He also is correct in that the Reagan Presidency was managed to an extreme by these organizations, as were the first Bush administration (Bush himself was a member of all three), Clinton's (Bill is also a member of all three), George W. Bush (essentially everyone below Bush are members, and most disconcerting, Obama has been stage-managed from 1983 by Brzezinski and others, and is little more than a front man for the Bilderbergs. That's why Bill Clinton became so enraged when he saw the Bilderberg and TC support go to Obama instead of his wife -- she was considered to be less manageable than Obama. Kerry was also a Bilderberg, and indeed, so is Chris Dodd, one of the architects of the mortgage mess and Henry Paulson, the man who will be transferring 700 billion dollars from American taxpayers to his Bilderberg buddies. For those who still have doubts concerning this manipulation, consider the Bilderberg action when the gasoline prices reached $4.00 at the pump and McCain began surging in the polls due to his energy policies. The Bilderbergs took swift action in the oil futures market as only they could do, and three months later, high gasoline prices have been forgotten as an economic issue. Hey, folks, that's control that would be far beyond Hitler's comprehension.

So buy and read this book, but soft peddle the Hitler connection. The actual reality is much worse, and probably irreversible due to the propaganda taught in American schools since World War II and sent out every day on American TV stations. For your viewing pleasure, all of the major media outlets (including Fox -- Murdock is a Bilderberg) are owned or controlled by Bilderberg members. You'll never hear O'Reilly or Hannity on Fox mention the Bilderbergs, Bill Moyers at PBS is PBS's primary Bilderberg member, and the New York Times and Washington Post are little more than Bilderberg house organs. Enjoy yourself -- it's later than you think.
