Lovely vignettes

This book was pretty, and had some lovely vignettes pictured, but I was hoping for more depictions of complete rooms and designer attributions. It seemed like an expanded version of Ms. Hoffman's Bliss Victoria magazine. I felt like I had eaten the salad and was still waiting for the main course.

Close, But No Cigar

Having read and treasured "Gracious Tables", I expected more from this book. While there are a few really nice photographs and some decent commentary, it just seemed to fall short of the grandeur of "Gracious Tables" which I recommend often and use for personal entertaining inspiration. Phyllis Hoffman has exquisite taste, and I would like to see a lot more of it through lavish pictorials in her books.

Amid this realistically complex generational sandwich, the book's appealing horse scenes—depicted with unsentimental affection—help build a moving story of loss, survival and renewal.

The accident, then three dominoes fall

Annemarie’s life through the first three chapters. Then she is left to cope for the next eighteen chapters with the consequences, the fallout, the bad decisions, the non-decisions, the foibles and fumbles of her mid-thirties years. Ride it out, Annemarie, and learn about Pappa, about Mutti, about Eva, about Dan, and eventually about yourself. Things the reader knew by the fifth chapter, Annemarie learns by the end. We learn to watch for the same symptoms in our own life-illnesses. Her “litany of disasters is like an Ohrwurm,” a tune you hear over and over again in your ear, an undying repetition of the same tune, perhaps in a different key in later chapters, but the theme rides up over itself repeatedly into our consciousness. We cannot believe that the woman, otherwise sentient and thoughtful, can remember so vividly and still be so forgetful. It stretched the suspension of my unbelief from time to time, but Annemarie is my Schatzlein, too. My eye, along with Mutti’s, turns away, but my heart never gave up on her. She reminds me too strongly of people I love, and even of myself at times. Fine writing, evocative, penetrating, and finally true.

Little girls and their horses

I am bothered by the first chapter where the horse, in organized competition, jumped over the fence and landed his full weight on his fetlock which shattered and sent his rider, a little girl, into a coma and body cast for months. I was glad that the girl didn't jump to her feet hollaring "That was fun! Let's do it again!" And so the story is committed to the question, what happens when she has a little girl of her own who grows up dreaming of a horse of her own? Just to narrow her choices she returns to her parents' horse-riding academy where her dad is dying and her mother never understood why she didn't saddle up at her earliest opportunity. I mean what for God's sake is wrong with this girl? And then, get a grip, she meets a horse identical to the one who died in chapter one. Spooky.

I loved Water For Elephants and I was thrilled to find Riding lessons... until I read passed the exciting opening chapters and discovered the astonishingly unlikable protagonist and her astonishingly unlikable actions. A writer of comedy she is not; at turning off readers she is quite good. Until I find a reason not to, when I like a writer for a single book I buy their other books, those past and those to come. Sara Gruen lost me with this one.

A Must for Chili Pepper Fans

It's great to see a book about a band written in their own words. It has been on heck of a ride for RCHP and even if you are a hardcore fan, you will have insight into this band that you never had before. The photographs are incredible, but the band member comments and stories really make them take a back seat. You absolutely cannot go wrong buying this book. You will be entertained and will learn a lot about a wonderful band who have seen and done it all....Bravo, Peppers :)

About the Author

Jon R. Bond received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is currently a professor of political science at Texas A&M University. His research analyzes the policy making process and the operation of democracy in American politics. Specifically, he is interested in the interactions of American political institutions, especially Congress and the presidency, and how electoral motivations affect democratic responsiveness in American political institutions. He has published more than three-dozen chapters and journal articles on presidential-congressional relations, congressional elections, and public policy. He served as president of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society from 2006-2008, and president of the Southern Political Science Association, the oldest regional political science association from 2006-2007.

Kevin Smith received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is currently a professor of political science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he is also co-director of the UNL Political Science Physiology Lab. His primary research focus is on the biology of political attitudes and behavior. Smith is the recipient of his university’s College of Arts & Sciences Outstanding Research and Creative Achievement Award.

Great textbook and far cheaper than the campus bookstore

Bond is both a fantastic professor and a great writer. The book is actually entertaining most of the time and I didn't mind reading it (it was also pretty much my only textbook I did open).

Better Than the Books

Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses definitely translates well into Manga. I've read the first three books in her series, and reading all the meticulously described clothing gets kind of old. Not to mention how after a while it just feels like overused goth sterotypes in her written works. I was worried that the Manga wouldn't be better than the novels. I was wrong.

The Manga has a good flow, it's cute and funny. It introduces a lot of new characters, meaning it isn't necessary to have read Schreiber's Vampire Kisses novels - so far Alexander, Raven and Becky are the only characters to get lots of play in both the novels and Manga. The art is good (although that's coming from someone who's never read Manga before).

The length was the only part I could fault. It was a very quick read, and it didn't feel like it got deep enough into the story, although it did set up a good foundation and background.

Great Art, Good Find.

Raven has an idyllic relationship with her boyfriend, Alexander. The one catch--they can only be outside at night, because he's a vampire. This fact doesn't deter the Gothic sixteen year-old Raven, in fact, she wishes she was a vampire herself! Their cemetery escapes are abruptly halted one night when they encounter four upturned graves, and Alexander finds a toy from his past...

I'm pretty new to the world of manga--even graphic novels, and this one was the first one I ever bought. It didn't leave me very disappointed, except for the size of the book. I really wish it was longer, because by the time I really got to know the characters it was nearly done [I have yet to read the series this is based on]. Also, the size of the book didn't let the story develop, and like the characters, by the time I got into the story it was nearly done. However, the art is really nice, and it added a lot to the plot.

Historical Thinking Goldmine (beyond sourcing!)

Awesome. I love Sam Wineburg's work, but I appreciate how Nokes gets beyond what he calls "historian heuristics" (sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading) to look at other forms of historical thinking including periodization and a proper mindset. He also addresses a range of sources, including artifacts, data, music, and monuments as well as the more traditional images and written documents.

Each chapter has the same set-up: a vignette where too-clever students engage in a sample lesson, a discussion of the historical skill that lesson addresses, an analysis of the scaffolding and other considerations for working with a specific source type, and suggestions for how students can create their own version of this source. I straight-up copied one of his lessons, but the real wealth in this book is that these templates and considerations are really easy to re-fit to your classroom, topics, and students. I think that this work fines the line between Wineburg's more theoretical work and Bruce Lesh's so-practical-it's-hard-to-see-the-big-picture (but still awesome) book. I also appreciate how Nokes draws on literacy research to discuss the "literacy" side of "historical literacy."

If you're going to buy just one book on teaching history and you're looking for something that will help your teaching, choose this over the other options. It's a little drier, but I've used it in short-term, long-term, and departmental planning.

This book is the perfect balance between theory and practice and is a MUST READ for any history teachers. Jeffery Nokes builds on the work of previous historical literacy experts including Sam Wineburg, Bruce Lesh, Bruce VanSledright, and many others. I really appreciated his writing style, including the fictional stories at the beginning of chapters that illustrate his points, and the book maintains your interest with a solid mixture of practical, use-on-Monday advice and historical literacy research summaries. It's readable and useful.
