Ending Campus Violence: New Approaches to Prevention, by Brian Van Brunt

With the growth of threats and violence in higher education settings, college campuses are increasingly expected to have systems in place to identify potentially aggressive individuals and intervene to ensure the safety of the campus population. This book will be useful for student affairs professionals as well as college counselors, psychologists, social workers interested in the practical management of aggression and violence on a college campus. It will also be a valuable resource for those involved in creating and running behavioral intervention teams and threat/risk assessment teams. Ten case studies from both the community and residential college settings provide a comprehensive overview of campus violence and how to intervene to prevent it. Pertinent background information is discussed as an introduction to these narratives, such as the fundamentals of aggression and violence on campuses; how these behaviors can impact students, faculty, and staff; and what can be learned from past campus violence. Along with discussion questions and a review of ways to approach each situation, experts in higher education, forensic risk assessment, law enforcement, and legal issues weigh in on each case study. Their perspectives offer a context and broad base of opinions and ideas on how each case could be handled. Additional examples for further training of the college counselor are given through a detailed look at almost 100 incidents of violence, including thwarted attacks, rampage shootings, and hostage situations.

Excellent Resource
By James T. McBride
As a school and campus crime prevention practitioner, I respectfully call the attention of my colleagues to this very informative text. In regards to the concept of detecting "red flag" behavior, Van Brunt's has done all of us a noteworthy service. This book should be required reading for anyone involved in school and campus counseling, mental health, crime prevention, and facilities protection. It offers insights into almost every aspect of the "practial management" of behavioral threat mitigation. Read the book. If you're an advocate in any of these fields, you'll find it to be extremely informative and beneficial. Share it with others. We can make progress if we continue to work together as colleagues to better protect our learning environments. J.T. McBride

Great Resource - Needs Expanding
By TR Fixer
This book is an excellent introduction to our professional (criminological and clinical) knowledge of school shootings. The author provides hypothetical case studies with multiple perspective responses. This book is a must-read for those who work in education or consult on cases of school violence.

I wish that there was much more detail to the actual cases that are given very brief summaries in Chapter 9. Many of the summaries lack detail to be of use to those who are looking for data to develop protocols/policies for evaluation/prevention.

Also, all school shootings are considered. I would submit that there are individuals who either attempt/carry out mass school violence or even violence directed towards a few individuals that carry the dynamic of school shooters, while others commit acts of murder on school campuses that would not be consistent with the school shooter dynamic.

There appears to be two major types of perpetrators of school violence: Psychopathic/Antisocial and Psychotic.

An interesting tidbit - in about 10% of the cases where the perpetrator was a teenaged student, Steven King's novel, Rage was read by the perpetrator.

One warning call in the book that should be headed: respond to bullying by protecting the bully's victim and punishing the bully.

Overall, though this book needs updating and expanding, it is an invaluable resource for educators, clinicians, and those who work in the criminal justice arena.

Book Review of "Ending Campus Violence" ~ author Brian Van Brunt.
By Robert M. Clark
This extensive study of student shootings and mass violence is very comprehensive
and one of the best books on the topic. Brian Van Brunt is one of the experts on
this topic. He reviews the history of many shooters and their symptoms over years,
and has a plan to reduce the tradgedy of mass killings on and off campus. He reviews
other good research and has contact with many expert professionals on the topic.
I highly recommend this book. ~ Robert Clark, LCSW
