The Anti-Group: Destructive Forces in the Group and their Creative Potential (Routledge Mental Health Classic Editions), by Morris Nitsun

The 'anti-group' is a major conceptual addition to the theory and practice of group psychotherapy. It comprises the negative, disruptive elements, which threaten to undermine and even destroy the group, but when contained, have the potential to mobilise the group's creative processes. Understanding the 'anti-group' gives therapists new perspectives on the nature of relationships and alternative strategies for managing destructive behaviour.

This Child Will Be Great: Memoir of a Remarkable Life

In January 2006, after the Republic of Liberia had been racked by fourteen years of brutal civil conflict, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf—Africa's "Iron Lady"—was sworn in as president, an event that marked a tremendous turning point in the history of the West African nation.

In this stirring memoir, Sirleaf shares the story of her rise to power, including her early childhood; her experiences with abuse, imprisonment, and exile; and her fight for democracy and social justice. She reveals her determination to succeed in multiple worlds, from her studies in the United States to her work as an international bank executive, to campaigning in some of Liberia's most desperate and war-torn villages and neighborhoods. It is the tale of an outspoken political and social reformer who fought the oppression of dictators and championed change. By telling her story, Sirleaf encourages women everywhere to pursue leadership roles at the highest levels of power, and gives us all hope that we can change the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Forbes lists Sirleaf, the 23rd president of Liberia and the first elected female president on the African continent, among the 100 Most Powerful Women in 2008. In and out of government, in and out of exile, but consistent in her commitment to Liberia, Sirleaf in her memoir reveals herself to be among the most resilient, determined and courageous as well. She writes with modesty in a calm and measured tone. While her account includes a happy childhood and an unhappy marriage, the book is politically, not personally, focused as she (and Liberia) go through the disastrous presidencies of Samuel Doe and Charles Taylor. Sirleaf's training as an economist and her employment (e.g., in banking, as minister of finance in Liberia, and in U.N. development programs) informs the perspective from which she views internal Liberian history (e.g., the tensions between the settler class and the indigenous people) and Liberia's international relations. Although her focus is thoroughly on Liberia, the content is more widely instructive, particularly her account of the role of the Economic Community of West African States. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Africa’s first elected female president, Sirleaf chronicles her rise from an abused young wife and mother to a woman with a career in government finance and international banking to the president of Liberia since 2006. Sirleaf confronted corruption and incompetence through several Liberian governments and suffered imprisonment and exile for her controversial positions before ultimately returning and challenging the long and troubled history of her nation. Liberia was created by the U.S. to repatriate former slaves, creating a tension between Americo-Liberians and indigenous peoples that continues. She recounts her struggles at home and abroad; she watched dictator Samuel Doe and later Charles Taylor destroy Liberia while she continued to criticize U.S. involvement with corrupt regimes. Having no colonial power to overcome, Sirleaf contends that Liberia has often struggled to develop and maintain a sense of true national integration, something she has sought to achieve as she has worked to bring economic and social stability to her civil-war-torn nation. An inspiring inside look at a nation struggling to rebuild itself and the woman now behind those efforts. --Vanessa Bush

Review
“This is the incredible story of a woman who spent her life talking tough to the lunatics surrounding her. It is an accessible walk through Liberian history, told by someone who was somehow always in the center of the political storm.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Exceptionally well written, a true story that seems as much a thriller as the remembrances of an ambitious and brave woman. . . . This timely book, essential for anyone who hopes to understand West Africa in general and Liberia in particular, is a lesson in courage and perserverance.” (Washington Post)

“An inspiring inside look at a nation struggling to rebuild itself and the woman now behind those efforts.” (Booklist)

Unbeaten and Unbossed
By Lecil Wills
This is a very honest autobiography of an extroardinary woman. Madame Sirleaf doesn't include many specific dates such as her birthdate but nevertheless guides the reader through a honest protrait of her life. She discusses the hardships of her tribal and mixed race origins, as well as the elite Americo-Liberian background she was born into as the daughter of a lawmaker and teacher. She talks honestly about her strained marriage which she entered into at age 17. She even relates how her pocessive husband put a gun to her head inorder to control her. Yet she managed to leave her husband, despite having four boys to raise and pursue her career as an economist and technocrate. A brilliant and confident woman who refused to except her nations and genders limitations, refuse to give up her beliefs despite being jailed and threatened by brutal dictators, would go on to become a folk hero in her native land and revered throughout the world. Sirleaf worked for and ruffled the feathers of every President she worked for in Liberia from Tubman to Tolbert to Doe and Taylor in a span of nearly 40 years, until she herself at age 67 became the first woman to be elected President of an African nation. Her ability to rise through the male dominated Liberian and International Monetary culture, is what makes her story so compelling and an inspiration to women around the globe. And her ability to incorporate Liberia and her own legacy in an acurate historical perspective makes this an very important work for scholars around the world.

Important, Illuminating, and Timely
By Layli Maparyan
H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's rise to power in Liberia as the first democratically elected woman president in Africa stands as one of the most definitive events of 21st century politics. Not only does her presidency firmly establish the integral importance of women leaders on the world stage, but her unique positioning as a woman with both African and Western roots -- genealogically, geographically, and intellectually -- signals a new kind of 21st century leadership consciousness of which we can suddenly see reflections everywhere. This new memoir traces her rise to power and the development of her distinctive leadership style, reveals her innovative philosophies of governance, and offers her timely reflections on current world affairs and pressing global concerns.

Those who found the Liberian civil conflict from 1989-2003 confusing and confounding will also find that this book provides illuminating insights about what happened and why. More importantly, President Sirleaf offers guidance through example and commentary about how to move beyond political and social conflict to peace, reconciliation, development, and, ultimately, prosperity. President Sirleaf's gift is the ability to look at the big picture and hone in on how people with fundamental disagreements and historical animosities can be harmonized and coordinated into a thriving open society that cultivates dissent under the banner of democratic process. The words "visionary pragmatism" (see Stanlie M. James and Abena P.A. Busia's academic book, Theorizing Black Feminisms: The Visionary Pragmatism of Black Women) come to mind.

Despite the challenges that President Sirleaf, and indeed Liberia, still face, we observe in this book a vision, a plan, sound strategy, and dogged determination in action. What President Sirleaf evidences in her story is how realpolitik and peacemaking can and, arguably, must be reconciled and integrated for effective 21st century leadership. While certain aspects of this book are clearly addressed to other world leaders, whether political or economic, and other aspects are clearly addressed to the Liberian citizenry, the generality of this text is addressed to everyday people worldwide who are genuinely concerned about social change and peace and are looking for both inspiration and real world example. Additionally, in my view, this book is well situated to help rehabilitate the relationship between the US and Liberia in ways that will ultimately set a new model for altering North/South and donor nation/developing nation relations more generally.

My only criticism of this book - which is really just a jumping off point for discussion - is President Sirleaf's treatment of the ongoing debate about African values (collectivism) vs. Western values (individualism). While her discussion is illuminating and nuanced, my sense is that this is no longer an either/or question but rather one which must be approached with an eye towards unapologetic integration of these two value sets. However, she more than makes up for this limitation in her cogent advocacy of gender development and gender mainstreaming as a feature of the way forward, not just in Liberia but worldwide.

No leader is perfect, but some leaders really change the quality of life on Earth. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia is one such individual and we have the good fortune to read all about it in This Child Will Be Great: Memoir of a Remarkable Life by Africa's First Woman President. I recommend this book highly, and, if you are similarly concerned with women, politics, and peace, offer the following suggestions for further reading: Unbowed: A Memoir by Wangari Maathai, Love and Courage: A Story of Insubordination by Pregs Govender, Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculee Ilibagiza, Learning True Love: Practicing Buddhism in a Time of War by Sister Chan Khong, and It's Always Possible: One Woman's Transformation of India's Prison System by Kiran Bedi.

This Child Will Be Great
By J. McCrary
This Child Will Be Great: Memoir of a Remarkable Life by Africa's First Woman President

President Sirleaf's absolutely riveting memoir clearly explains how and why Liberia imploded in 1980. She gives us an unvarnished look at Liberia's founding in 1822 by freed American slaves, carries us through the superficially peaceful Tubman years, and explains how her country's history and American ties led to the horror of 14 years of total anarchy. She ends her story with hope, pride, and plans for both Liberia and Africa.

Her personal story is a strong, honest and inspirational narrative. From an abused teenage wife to a United Nations assistant secretary general, from living in exile to being elected president, she has lived an amazing life and she tells the story well.

My family lived in a mining town in the Liberian bush from 1964-1972. We knew many of the problems that the country faced, and we had fears for its survival. President Sirleaf's memoir makes me want to return to help rebuild this remarkable country.

From Publishers Weekly
Morris, a Roman Catholic priest and Fox News analyst, draws from his religious tradition as well as his experiences in the world of media to present understandable and genuine advice for those who suffer—in other words, everyone. The promise of the title is God's promise to bring something better out of suffering. For some, this may oversimplify the matter, but for others it will provide a glimmer of hope. One of the most useful chapters addresses the various images of God that people hold—all of which are incomplete, and some of which can be seen as spiritually harmful. The author describes these images accurately, ties them in with how people who maintain those images view suffering and uses real-life examples he has encountered in his ministry. The theodicy question (why does a loving God allow suffering?) will always present a quandary to believers of all stripes. Morris is successful in making the claim that it is possible to sustain one's faith in the midst of what is sometimes a cruel world. (Apr.)

Review
“A persuasive invitation to a fuller life.” (Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, Editor in Chief, First Things)

“Father Jonathan has allowed the reader entrance into his private study where he welcomes and converses with us on a personal yet riveting journey. His spiritual insight is profound!” (Sharon Deitrick, President of The Halo Foundation)

“With true compassion Father Jonathan Morris tackles a reality we will all confront sooner or later...His specific advice shows all of us how to turn tragedy and pain into spiritual gifts that can actually heal us in unexpected ways. Here’s a Promise worth keeping, and sharing with others.” (Raymond Arroyo, Author of the New York Times Bestseller, Mother Angelica)

“Easy to understand, with stories that everybody can identify with, The Promise left me with a better understanding of God’s way, when life hurts. I’ve already given a copy to someone who is suffering a personal challenge...” (Steve Doocy, Author of The Mr & Mrs Happy Handbook, and host of FOX & Friends, FOX News Channel)

Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Denver)

“The Promise will be for the book world what The Passion was for film--a watershed moment of inspired creativity capable of transforming lives from the inside out. Don’t believe me? “The Promise is a must read for those experiencing life’s difficult trials. Clearly, Father Jonathan is fast establishing himself as one of the most respected religious figures of our times.” (Chris Wyatt, Founder and CEO of GodTube)

Life Affirming and Life Changing!
By GlassHalfFull
`Why does God allow suffering?' - a painful question that is addressed in a compassionate, and even refreshing, way in this special book. I like to describe it as sitting down with a friend over a cup of coffee - `The Promise' is uplifting, encouraging and resonating with hope. Although this book may be directed at those going through a crisis or a difficult life experience, I think this would be an excellent read for anyone, at any stage of life, for those who consider faith important and those who do not.

I feel this book succeeds on three levels - Father Morris does an effective job in discussing both faith and reason as it relates to loss, suffering and why there is evil in the world. He also draws upon his experiences in counseling people and visiting various global `hot spots' as a journalist, which makes this book contemporary and intriguing from that perspective. I especially liked 'Letters from My In-Box' which are sprinkled throughout the book -- actual e-mails from readers of his column. Finally, Father Morris offers practical ideas and suggestions meant to enable you to better handle whatever life throws your way; he does this both in answering the heart-felt e-mails which he shares, but also in a special chapter at the end of the book.

I highly recommend this energetic and intelligent book; those who read it will definitely be blessed and will probably find that their faith has grown as well. It is clear through this book that this young priest has a heart for God and for others; I hope there will be more books from him.

Uplifting and truthful!

By some odd occurrence, I happened to come across this book the day it was released here on Amazon. Based on some of his video commentaries, I went ahead and ordered the book. I simply couldn't put it down when I received it. I read it in two days. I can relate to Fr Jonathan's life examples and how there is good to be seen out of life's unfortunate situations. Well written and backed with scripture, this is a great read for anyone who wants to take an honest and open look at why life is the way it is.

Magnificent
By Rev. Dr. John Trigilio, Jr.
Father Jonathan Morris has written a superb book much along the lines of my great hero, Father Benedict Groeschel, CFR. I highly recommend this to ALL my spiritual directees, parishioners, and fans from EWTN television and radio. It is inspiring, encouraging and filled with hope while never losing focus on reality, no matter how uncomfortable or painful it may be from time to time. A classic, I am sure, years from now, when both Father Morris and I and Father Ken Brighenti are in the old priests retirement home (at least 30 years to come)

A man of action. . .

Fearless. Loyal. Brilliant. Ruthless. Bold words are always used to describe English war hero Captain Chase Eversea, but another word unfortunately plays a role in every Eversea's destiny: trouble. And trouble for Chase arrives in the form of a mysterious message summoning him to a London rendezvous . . . where he encounters the memory of his most wicked indiscretion in the flesh: Rosalind March—the only woman he could never forget.

A Woman of Passion. . .

Five years ago, the reckless, charming beauty craved the formidable Captain's attention. But now Rosalind is a coolly self-possessed woman, and desire is the last thing on her mind: her sister has mysteriously disappeared and she needs Chase's help to find her. But as their search through London's darkest corners re-ignites long-smoldering passion and memories of old battles, Chase and Rosalind are challenged to surrender: to the depths of a wicked desire, and to the possibility of love.

Another great addition!
By K. Sowa
We are back to the Eversea family int he third book in the Pennyroyal Green series. This time it is wounded veteran, Chase, who takes center stage. Chase is pulled into a very inventive plot if I did say so, regarding disappearing girls and he has to solve that mystery with the woman he loved many years ago. I loved the back story of Chase and Rosalind. Mostly because, when the story takes place, neither one of them are young and naive. This is more of a love story about what comes after first love, which I always find refreshing. Of course, there are plenty of references to other Everseas and Redmonds which is something I enjoy about this series. The mystery that Rosalind and Chase are trying to solve was a very good one, actually, and it was fun to try to puzzle it out. I am still liking this series, so I’ll keep reading!

This book kept my interest from start to finish. I thought the two main characters, Rosalind and Chase, had great chemistry. A nice romance mixed with a little mystery and some humor.

Unforgivable Ending
By lovesbooks
I kept expecting this book to get better because of Long's great talent and because the suspense was full of powerful dread. Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver.

What I liked:

1. Liam, a Cockney urchin. Unfortunately, he's more charming and interesting than the hero.

2. The atmosphere of dread was terrific; unfortunately, Long did not deliver in the final resolution.

3. Scary puppets. If you have a dread/dislike/hatred of marionettes and puppets (as I do), Long is terrific in replicating that feeling. Unfortunately, it really doesn't go anywhere; it is just a quirk of Chase. The puppets are not possessed or supernatural, so all that dread and anxiety just kind of peters away in the face of Long's inability to follow through with a powerful resolution.

4. Long's unusual choice of time and off-beat portrayal of society. "Since the Surrender" is not your usual "Duke Marries Unsuitable Girl" romance. She delivers real color to the times.

What I didn't like: (INCLUDES SOME GENERAL SPOILERS)

1. The romance. Oddly enough, even though both the h&h are interesting, I just didn't know them well enough. Even when their yearning climaxes, it just seemed blah. Frankly, I skimmed most of their love scenes; I just didn't care enough. We don't really see Chase's commitment and determination to win Rosalind. I want my heroes to pull down castle walls, kidnap the heroines, kill the dragons, take on the Mafia, or do WHATEVER to get the heroines. Chase is not that kind of man.

Chase and Rosalind's choice of time and place for their coming together sexually endangers their lives and distracts from their vital exploration. I found it unbelievable and frankly, stupid.

2. Rosalind's withholding vital information (threatening letters she mysteriously received and later important clues) from Chase made no sense, except to create suspense which Long had created better in other ways. More damnably, Rosalind's withholding information that finally allows Chase to resolve his psychological burden until the VILLAIN brings it up makes their union seem lacking depth and emotional intimacy.

3. The ending, after Long has created terrific suspense and atmosphere, is a tepid let-down and really unforgivable in its change of tone. Chase weakly counters the villain's rationalization (essentially, he was bored and his crime didn't REALLY hurt anyone) with, "But it's dishonorable." He should be OUTRAGED. The villain's punishment lacks punch, horror, or dread; we don't even see his reaction because it happens off stage. Even worse, Chase allows the villain to pose as heroic to society AND, more importantly, enables future victimization. It's almost as if Long lost interest.

Just as bad is Long's portrayal of the other participants' collusion as merer acting out of funny and harmless fantasies. In fact, one senseless victim clearly thinks the horrific events that happened to her as no big deal, a choice she would have willingly made in other circumstances. In truth, these men victimized women, desolated families, and even murdered one woman, but because nothing is done to them (they just slink home), Long fails to deliver the necessary payoff of justice. "Since the Surrender" ends not with a bang, but with a whimper.

From Publishers Weekly
As seen on film and TV, the Phantom Zone where Superman's enemies are exiled is insubstantial and two-dimensional, much like this chronicle of the death of the cape-clad hero's home planet. Best known for sweeping space opera (the Seven Suns series; Sandworms of Dune), Anderson briskly and blandly narrates these events as if voicing a news documentary, completely removing the tension from otherwise dramatic turns of fate. After young artist Lara rescues gifted scientist Jor-El from the Zone, their courtship is lost among a host of fragmentary subplots and minor characters with names pulled straight from the acknowledgments page. Would-be dictator Zod, who twirls his mustache in mostly solitary musings for nearly half the book, disconcertingly insists on conducting the wedding before descending into tiresome megalomania. Frustrated Superman fans will wish that Anderson had instead expanded on Lara's brief private account of Zod's ascendance and Krypton's destruction. (Oct.)

“This Superman prequel is action-packed, depicting a lost world in fanatic detail…. Sci-fi of Miltonic ambition.” ---Kirkus

From the Back Cover

Everyone knows how Kal-El—Superman—was sent to Earth just before his planet exploded. But what led to such a disaster? Now, in The Last Days of Krypton, Kevin J. Anderson presents a sweeping tale of the pomp and grandeur, the intrigue and passion, and the politics and betrayals of a doomed world filled with brave heroes and cruel traitors.

Against the spectacular backdrop of Krypton's waning halcyon days, there is the courtship and marriage of Kal-El's parents, the brilliant scientist Jor-El and his historian wife, Lara. Together they fight to convince a stagnant, disbelieving society that their world is about to end. Jor-El's brother, Zor-El, leader of the fabled Argo City, joins the struggle not only to save the planet but also to fight against the menace of the ruthless and cunning General Zod.

The diabolical Zod, future archenemy of Superman, avails himself of a golden opportunity to seize power when the android Brainiac captures the capital city of Kandor. As Zod's grip on the populace tightens and his power grows, he too is blind to all the signs that point to the death of the very civilization he is trying to rule.

Through all of this, Jor-El and Lara's love for each other, their history, and their son allows for Krypton to live on even as the planet is torn apart around them. For in the escape of their baby lies Krypton's greatest gift—and Earth's greatest hero.

The Last Days of Krypton is a timeless, ground-breaking exploration of a world that has never been fully defined, and reveals the extraordinary origins of a legend that has never ceased to amaze and astound generation after generation.

A Disappointment...
By John A. M. Darnell
Ever since I was a child back in the sixties and one could buy a comic for twelve cents, I have been a moderately avid fan of Superman. No, I do not keep reams of comic books tucked away in a dark, protected corner of my abode, nor do I spend my life seeking out all things Kal-El, but when Superman literature or video crossed my path, I settled down for the ride, and only got back up after I was well sated.

When I received my copy of this book I even considered dropping what I was reading in favor of this 400-odd page tome. I'm glad I didn't. This was a mediocre read at best. Oh, the plot line was thrilling enough, but my disaffection with the work centers around two related problems. The first is the characterization, and the second is the character of the main proponents (and here, I refer to Lara and Jor-El).

My first criticism has to do with the fact that Mr. Anderson did a poor job convincing me that Lara and Jor-El were real. I came away from the book thinking, "well those were nice paper dolls dressed up as the bioparents of my favorite hero." I compare them with some of the works done by Timothy Zahn in the Star Wars universe or Peter David or Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens in the Star Trek universe and in this book, Anderson just comes out looking like a rank amateur.

And then, what characterization there was, did not feel like Jor-El or Lara. I have alway carried this picture in my head of a Jor-El who is tall and broad-shouldered, who looks you in the eye when he speaks and who lets nothing get past him. He stands tall and proud, and never shys away from the truth, nor does he let others do the same. Anderson's Jor-El gave me the impression of a stooped, mumbling, bumbling horn-rimmed grad student with an overly large adams' apple who happens to be really smart and eventually gets to the truth.

I was glad to get some questions answered, like "where did Kandor come from?" or "Who is General Zod and what was he trying to do?" Other, less important questions that were answered were, "why would a planet so advanced in tech and knowledge allow itself to get blown up?"

So in the end, because I am a fan and wanted to immerse myself in that world, I stuck it out and I was more or less glad that I did. But, if you are not a fan, if you do not hunger and thirst for more of the Man of Steel, then this piece of fiction will bore you. Leave it alone and try one of the graphic novels instead. They are more impressive, and worth your investment of time.

Amazon.com Review
The Meaning of Jesus: Two Visions is a theological remix of the old Cole Porter song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off." In alternating chapters, the (mostly) liberal Marcus J. Borg and the (mostly) conservative N.T. Wright consider the major questions of the historical-Jesus debate that has dominated biblical studies in the 1990s. Borg and Wright agree that Jesus was the Christian messiah and preached the Kingdom of God, but they disagree about the Virgin birth, the purpose of Jesus' death, the issue of his bodily resurrection, and the question of his divinity. The Ping-Pong structure of this book and the fastidious politeness with which the authors treat one another sometimes give The Meaning of Jesus a tomato/tomahto, potato/potahto bounciness, but the project is nevertheless worthy: this is a simple, clear orientation to some of the most important biblical questions of our time, and a record of a lively and loving friendship between two of the best Christian scholars alive. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly
In this valuable book, historical Jesus scholars Bog (Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time) and Wright (Jesus and the Victory of God) engage in a lively debate on the significance of historical Jesus research for the Christian faith. Each of the seven sections of the book contains alternating chapters by the two authors. For example, in a section called "How Do We Know About Jesus?" Borg argues that the ways people "see" Jesus are determined by the critical lenses and methods they use to look at the sources, while Wright claims that we "know" Jesus as a result of a dialogue between faith and history. In similar fashion, Borg and Wright exchange remarks on topics ranging from the Virgin Birth and "Was Jesus God?" to the crucifixion, the resurrection and the Second Coming. Borg's conclusions about the historical Jesus arise out of his conviction that the Gospels are not historical reports that can be factually verified but documents in which history is "metaphorized" to reveal symbolic meanings about Jesus' life. Wright, on the other hand, argues that a historical reading of the Gospels supports a Christian's "faith-knowledge" of Jesus. This is a splendid introduction to contemporary conversations about the historical Jesus as well as an excellent primer on New Testament Christology for general readers.

From Library Journal
Borg and Wright, both noted Jesus scholars, present a slow-motion dialog to illustrate their somewhat contrasting views of the nature of the historical Jesus and the consequences of their views for modern-day Christian belief. They share the goal of "a life full of God" but differ on the importance of different aspects of Jesus' life. This clear, accessible book ought to prove thought-provoking to sincere Christians. For most religious studies collections.

an interesting new approach
By A Customer
'The Meaning of Jesus' has seemed to take a new approach in its genre. This is most likely a result of the two mens friendship. It can be read by anyone without too much knowledge of the historical Jesus. NT Wright does use some intellectual language which might be frightening to some, but his point is not missed. Marcus Borg writes in plain old english which makes for easy reading without sacrificing to much meaningful content. This book is definitly an introduction and nothing written in it is new. It does cover many issues on several different topics. I'd reccomend this book to anyone who is casually interested in the case for the historical Jesus. I think you'll find it a very rewarding read.

An Articulate and Respectful Theological Debate
By H. Paul Greenough
Seven of ten Americans today would likely describe themselves as Christians, although they would disagree widely on just what that statement means, historically, today, and after death. Current Christian theologians are much closer to consensus at a very general level, (and that consensus would hold some surprises for many of the laity), but differ sharply on their answers to deeper, more precisely framed questions that are at the core of the faith.
This book presents a very respectful and articulate debate between two of the most accessible theologians writing today. Each pair of chapters contains their answers, and reasons behind them, to an explicit and clearly stated question. In short, we have two careful scholars -- both intelligent, well educated, strongly Christian, and completely devoted to their subject - who have agreed to disagree. Reading their arguments will show you what current Christian theologians consider to be important unresolved issues of their faith and come to your own conclusion as to which answer you believe.
I am not a theologian, competent to judge the match, but I confess to giving the victory to Borg - either because I instinctively find his answers more satisfying, or because he seems the more pursuasive writer. But who "won" the debate is not really important. What counts is that the reader is treated to a rare view of two sides of the theological topics of current interest, presented in exceptionally clear, down-to-earth language that uses the highly specialized vocabulary of theology only when absolutely necessary. Whether you consider yourself a Christian or not, reading the book would give you a richer appreciation of the faith.

An Engaging Debate, Not Just For Clergy
By Barnabus
Marcus Borg and N.T. Wright (Tom) not only explore the territories raised by the fundamentalist/modernist controversies at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, but go beyond that old debate (which really is grounded in what kind of principles one uses to interpret scripture--a far older debate, as old as the early church fathers) and really strike at the heart of the matter: Who is Jesus (whom Christians call Christ or Messiah)? If he is merely a historical character, buried under layers of interpretation put in place by religious communities of faith (the search for the 'historical' Jesus)then the true character of the gospels and New Testament letters is lost. Tom Wright makes it clear that Jesus is alive! But, Marcus Borg, while sifting through layers, understands that Jesus Christ is Lord, and the staggering implications of that for Christians in any age. No matter where you fall in the theological spectrum, this book, will only make Jesus shine ever more brightly, like the true diamond Christ is. This book can take one to the Christ of faith, who is, after all, "the Living Christ."

About the Author

Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing never had any intention of getting mixed up in the ludicrous exploits of his brother. But it was his fate to become an accidental vampyre hunter. After many dangerous journeys, he found himself in prison and his fate is unknown.

Gustav de Wolff was Dr. Van Helsing's trusted companion. Actually, he did a lot of the work credited to his master. But being loyal and true, that didn't bother him—too much.

This is a great book, imaginative and detailed.
By Carsten Blackmon
This book is the lost journal of a vampire hunter, Cornelius Van Helsing, related to the Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula. In involves references to Johnathan and Mina Harker with a twist. The book's layout is similar to that of the Ology books (dragonology, wizardology, Egyptology, and Pirateology). This book explores the legend and lore of the vampire from which Bram Stoker himself created his novel. It seems like something for a kid but it's imaginative design makes it worth it to get for teens and adults as well. There is also a surprise at the end so read the pages carefully.

A fun read and great gift for Dracula fans
By Z Hayes
The target age group for this book is 9-12, but I enjoyed it even as an adult. The premise is interesting - a hitherto lost journal of Dr Cornelius Van Helsing [brother of "Dracula's" Van Helsing] is found and chronicles Cornelius' efforts at solving the mystery of his brother's strange illness. Cornelius is accompanied by his trusted aide, Gustav de Wolff. The pair travel from London to Transylvania and encounter many adventures along the way, and face dangers of the most macabre kind. The book is presented in an epistolary format, i.e. a series of journal entries. Each page is beautifully-illustrated with maps, authentic-looking photographs, inserts [such as a booklet on vampyre myths and lore], a rub-the-patch feature that reveals a secret message, fake wolf fur, sketches, pull-the-tabs, lift-the-flaps,a booklet that contains spells of protection, court documents, etc.

All in all, a fun & interesting read for young and not-so-young fans of "Dracula"!

Great Book!
By Vivian S. Ashley
I bought this book for my 9 year old son and 12 year old daughter for Halloween. It was so neat that I went ahead and gave it to them early. They love this book! It has all sorts of neat little notes and windows to open up. My son loved the wolf hair. Great book for kids and adults.
