The book argues for de-criminalisation of historical revisionism and pornography, and illuminates topics such as genocide denial, the rise of Prague and Budapest as Europe’s porno-capitals, anti-Semitism and anti-Gypsyism, religious obscurantism and homophobia, virulent Islamophobia, and the glorification of terrorism.

The research methodology in this study combines a descriptive case law assessment (comparative constitutional, public international, and EU law) with a normative critique stemming from post-structuralist scrutiny, rhetoric, postmodern legal movements, legal history, history of ideas, and art criticism.

David Lewis is Professor of Social Policy and Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science. A social anthropologist by training, he has degrees from the Universities of Cambridge and Bath. His main interests are the theory and practice of international development, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society, and rural development.

An essential resource for students, practitioners and academics

This book is essential to anyone, be it academic or practitioner, who has an interest in managing an NGO in a developing country. I still remember when I came across the first edition of the book as a student, and how excited I was about the clarity in which it was explained. With the revisions and updates this third edition the book still remains a must-have for every student of development and the management of NGOs. Sitting now at the other side of the table (as a Lecturer this time), one of the additional features that make this book so interesting is its companion website with additional materials (such as video clips).

In a world where inequalities between nations still exist and where neither the market nor the state seem to be able to deliver much needed goods and services to people in need, NGOs play a vital role in trying to alleviate much of this suffering. In order to do so effectively NGOs need to be organised and managed. Already since a decade or three we see NGOs professionalising their operations. Management, as Lewis discusses in this book, is no longer a bad word to be avoided. This means we need to find ways in which management can work for NGOs. In the light of the many discussions with regard to increasing Aid Effectiveness, understanding management in development NGOs is one of the important questions academics and practitioners ask themselves.

In this third edition of what is probably one of the few comprehensive and theoretically grounded books on managing development NGOs Lewis tries to answer this question. The book starts by giving us an overview of the context in which these organisations operate, the debate on management in NGOs and the various understandings of the concept of ‘NGOs’. Part II takes us through various debates on the theory of NGO management. The final part of the book zooms in on the practice of NGO management. One of the strong points of the book, in my eyes, is its interdisciplinary approach. Lewis does not shy away from introducing a number of different disciplines and theoretical lenses to help us understand the issues, the context and the complexities (and it is messy out there on the ground) of managing development NGOs. In this academically well informed book, Lewis does not forget to bring us back to reality and practice by highlighting stories, practices and real life experiences in a number of explanatory boxes scattered across the various chapters.

Informed by his extensive experience of working in a number of developing countries this book is and remains one of the most important and influential books written on the management of development NGOs.

Joseph DELANEY is the author of the internationally best-selling The Last Apprentice series, which is now a major motion picture, Seventh Son. He is a former English teacher who lives in the heart of boggart territory in Lancashire, England. Friend or Foe? Says the Fiend

Taking up immediately after the ending of book four, book five in the Last Apprentice series still delivers the goods. Not a stand alone story, one must have at least read book four, if not all the others, in order to understand what happens in this book and which characters are on which side of the battling forces of good and evil.

This series has not petered out, the action, the frightening events and scenes, the ongoing developments of Tom's apprentice training, and additional insight into the main characters, remains steady and intriguing. I did not feel AS frightened in this book as in the others, but the reader will not be disappointed. The fear and chills are still there to keep the eerie intensity and high suspense alive. There are a good deal of high action scenes to keep you riveted to the book and to keep the pages turning. I found the author put in a lot more character development to the key players, showing us that all of us have darkness as well as light within us. As Tom learns this more in this book it helps him grow and aids him in his ongoing training as he inches toward his eventual graduation to an official Spook himself some day. I also felt that this book had more of an intricate plot that leads the reader down many paths and shows us many twists and turns that are unexpected and surprising. As Tom grows, his experience broadens and the story backs this up with more of a challenging read than the earlier, simpler installments. I enjoyed this book as much as the others, I found no disappointing aspects and in fact, I thought the wonderful surprise elements at the end were quite brilliant and teasing which will have us all eagerly awaiting the next book. It appears that the author is showing us his increasing talent, as well as our young hero's. Delaney has created a fabulous horror series for young adults that just does not stop delivering terrific reads.

One other thing I feel I must add and praise; the illustrations. I truly feel that these marvelous black and white illustrations and almost holographic cover designs add even more appeal to the success of these books. Each illustration evokes such a frightening feeling that the reader just cant help but feel scared to death. The art work here is truly talented and wonderful to behold. How can you not have a winning series with sensational illustrations to accompany very talented and creative stories? Bravo to both the author and the artist!

A good page-turning read

THE BOTTOM LINE(at the top of the review):

I like that I didn't have to have read the other books in the series to pick up up this book and enjoy the suspense.
This book does make plenty of reference to previous adventures, so it makes me want to go back and catch up on what has occurred. It also leaves off with enough new hints at books to come, yet a feeling that the main plot of this story was resolved.

My 10yr old asked me about the book and when I told him of the contents he felt it might be a little scary but doable for his sensitive nature. I'd have to agree.

MORE DETAILS:
The story is about the spook apprentice, Tom Ward, who is sent by his spook master to train for a short time under the another spook, Bill Arkwright. Arkwright specializes in water creatures as he lives in an area surrounded by canals and marshes. This is only the beginning of Tom's battles with the legendary water witch, Morwena and the continuing battle with the Fiend.

The characters are likable. They have flaws and strengths making them more than cardboard stereotypes of the fantasy genre. We get to see the growth of several characters through the story, which added a higher enjoyment to the time invested reading about their lives.

The story progresses at a logical, even pace. When something unexpected happened, I was glad to see the characters stay true to themselves as they try to work out the situation. The mysteries in the story are revealed at an even pace, to where at the end of the book more new truths are discovered, which set up things for books to come.

The setting was described in enough detail that I felt the chill of the cold mist and the stink of the marsh. I felt like I was there.

The one reason I give this a minus 1 star is the author's same one-side preaching seen in our post-modern society, in regards to the statement that God doesn't exist due to evil in the world. The story was great till this diatribe from the Fiend.

It would have been fine if there was a rebuttal to bring balance to the story, but there wasn't. I'm only concerned that the young and impressionable will leave with the same faulty arguments to apply to their own understanding of the universe, before exploring the other side of the coin. The author could have avoided this by presenting all sides to the open-minded seeker.

Overall, I can see myself reading more books in the series to get the full extent of Tom's life as an apprentice and eventually how the story lends itself to the title: The Last Apprentice.

Read the Series in Order! This is not a stand alone book!

What prompted me to write this review is the astounding number of reviews (good or bad) from people who apparently picked up this book without realizing that it is part of a series! It gives me great cause to question their reading comprehension and the validity of their reviews! What amazed me more is that a lot of these people go on to recommend it as a standalone book!

At any rate, I will say that the book is fairly easy to read. I started reading this series w/ my son. The first book in the series where you should start is "Revenge of the Witch." He's in 2nd grade and stopped after the 3rd and 4th books became a little too intense for him. Unfortunately I was hooked and am barreling through these books. Much of this book reverberates with previous stories and actions. The significance of family, of a few words, and memories described are more powerful than their written text because of these ties. Hence I strongly rec. reading from the start.

The stories are told in 1st person (Tom Ward) who is the Last Apprentice as he continues to learn to battle and combat the dark. To warn other parents, besides the intensity of the story, there are other ethical or moral questions that are raised in the book. There is a pure evil, literally the Devil, but the question of whether God exists is not clearly demonstrated. Indeed, at one point, the protagonist is put forth the question of how God if he exists could allow so much suffering and darkness to thrive?

There are also many dark/grey characters. One of the favorites is the love interest of the story, but is it okay to use any means necessary to protect someone you love? Other characters include another Spook who has his own inner demons and deals with witches and the dark more harshly than the Old spook! And how close can you deal w/ the dark (even to fight a worse enemy) before you become tainted thus yourself?

In talking about this book/series, a lot of comparisons are made to Harry Potter. Perhaps b/c both books appeal to a broad range of adult audiences. The writing/sentence construction in this book is much simpler, but the character development, intensity, and overall respect for the genre are much greater in Mr. Delaney's work. There's not quite a lot of flash but more internal conflict which usually does not make for a successful transition to film or TV.

I hope this review helps and please start at the beginning of the series.

Kamenetz, a poet and a Jew, was invited to attend and write about a historical meeting between a delegation of American Jews and a group of Tibetan Buddhists that included the Dalai Lama. Summoned by the Dalai Lama to Dharamsala, the retreat in northern India that the Tibetan exile community has inhabited since the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, a group of eight Jewish leaders goes to India for a week of discussions in order to teach the Tibetan spiritual leader what the Jewish tradition has learned about religious self-preservation. Jewish poet and designated eyewitness Kamenetz (English/Louisiana Univ.) comes along for the ride and on the way learns about the richness of his own Jewish identity by hearing about its similarities to Tibetan Buddhism. Familiar with survival in the face of exile and near-annihilation, the Jewish leaders, mostly rabbis, communicate their wisdom to the Dalai Lama. While we are prepared for a two-way exchange, Kamenetz tells us mostly about the rich, contradictory life of modern Judaism: from the Orthodox Irving (``Yitz'') and Blu Greenberg, who are concerned with maintaining the purity of religious observance, to the kabbalistic Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, who, as a leader of the Reconstructionist movement, unites the esoteric traditions of Jewish mysticism with a post-1960s eclecticism. At the heart of the book is an exchange between Schachter-Shalomi and the Dalai Lama about the nature of angels and reincarnation, during which the Jews and Buddhists present realize the close parallels between their traditions. The large number of ``JUBUs,'' Jewish Buddhists (including Allen Ginsberg) Kamenetz encounters leads him to question the problem of some American Jews' conversion to Buddhism in response to what they perceived as Judaism's closed spiritual door. But as the reader discovers, the Jewish esoteric tradition, including specific spiritual practices such as meditation, is available to the ardent seeker. A Spritual Rediscovery

In 1990, Rodger Kamenetz, a secular Jew and English professor at Louisiana State University, accompanied a group of eight Jewish leaders to Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama lives in exile. This book, published in 1994, describes that interfaith dialog as well as his many interviews later with Jews who practice Buddhism, including Alan Ginsberg and Ram Das.
The Dalai Lama was particularly interested in how the Jews survived as a people in Diaspora during their thousands of years in exile. Tibetan Buddhists, now expelled from their homeland are facing the same dilemma.
The Jews were particularly interested in what the attraction was for modern Jews in Buddhism because there have been so many who have seemed to abandon their Jewish heritage.
The author writes well, so well in fact that he took me deeper into concepts than I have ever been before. There are a lot of facts in this book and a lot of theology. I have no background in philosophy, theology, mysticism, meditation or any spiritual practices. And yet I was able to follow most of it.
The Jews and Tibetan Buddhists have some things in common. Their monks study sacred texts and practice debate. There are some ancient words that are common to both religions. And on a deep spiritual level, they both practice meditation and visualization.
The differences are vast though. The Jewish tradition is rooted in the family. The Tibetan in a monastic tradition. The Jews believe there is one lifetime. The Tibetans believe in reincarnation.
When the question of the holocaust came up, the Tibetan answer was that it was karma for something bad they did in their past lives when they might or might not have necessarily been Jews. The Jews were shocked by this. They felt it was blaming the victim.
The big issue in the book was about spirituality, however. Modern Judaism is based on customs and traditions and ethnic identity. It is not based on the essence of spirituality which is reached in prayer, meditation, chanting and communication with something much deeper than self, and -- ultimately -- results in enlightenment.
I read this book slowly, each paragraph bringing up ideas I had never even knew existed before. It was an experience in itself to share the journey with the author who did painstaking research to pull this little gem of a book together.
Recommended for someone who wants to do some deep thinking about spirituality and its place in the modern world.

An well told story and call to action

I highly recommended this book to anyone looking to understanding spiritual journeys. It is relevant to Jews, Buddhists, and Muslims looking to understand the decline of western religion in a modern world. It tells the story of a Jewish encounter with the Dalai llama, and discusses how western eastern spiritually can be leveraged together to renew spiritual practice.

a chance to learn along with Kamenetz

It's clear that Kamenetz himself learned a lot during the events he writes of, and the book makes it possible to ride on his shoulders through that both the meeting between the Dalai Lama and a delegation from across the spectrum of Judaism and his digestion of those events afterwards. The book is centered more on Judaism than about Buddhism, and covers issues such as the principles of Kabbalah in an authentic, nontrendy form and how it fits into mainstream Judaism; the commonalities and differences between Jewish and Buddhist views of the world; the failures of current Jewish religious education, and the effects of the Holocaust on modern Judaism (not just the people killed, but ho it has changed the focus of the religion). It addresses some of the same concerns about assimilation as Anne Roiphe's Generation Without Memory, but by contrasting Judaism to Buddhism and examining some of the people who are in a spectrum between the two ("JuBus") comes closer to finding some answers.

Dr. George L. Blackburn, an associate professor of surgery and nutrition, is the S. Daniel Abraham chair in Nutrition Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He has trained more than 100 fellows in applied and clinical nutrition and has written widely on various aspects of nutrition, medicine, and metabolism, with over 400 publications to date.

Book Review: Break Through Your Set Point by George Blackburn

Dr. George Blackburn of Harvard Medical School, author of Break Through Your Set Point, recommends we eat a little less at each meal. In fact, he says "There's no getting around it: to lose weight, you've got to eat less." Sound scary? Combined with exercise, the key is not to starve yourself, but to gradually reduce calories over time and eat healthy foods. Dr. Blackburn does not believe we should eliminate a whole food group because inevitably a dieter will begin to eat the once avoided foods again.

First, feel full; eat a minimum of 450 calories at every major meal. So don't skip breakfast and then hear your stomach growling while you're at your desk working.

Second, take your time eating. Dr. Blackburn wishes we'd slow down and pass on dashboard dining. Instead, spend at least 20 minutes munching your meal. This will enable your stomach to send out an "I'm full" message to your brain. A Set Point tip includes mentally dividing your plate into four sections. Allow yourself five minutes to eat each sections' contents. No skipping ahead either. Make this a conscious effort because the faster you gobble, sometimes mindlessly, the more calories you'll consume.

Other Set Point tips include: use smaller plates for your meals; leave 1/8 of your meal on your plate; don't buy the high-calorie treats you know you might overindulge with (cookies, ice cream, etc..); eat small snacks about 1/2 hour before the main meal; consume more soup, salad, and fruit; share your restaurant meal; cut down on the amount of choices at each meal; drink or eat a meal replacer (protein shake or bar); have breakfast for dinner (cereal).

Very interesting, nutritionally-minded and well researched book.

Nutritional Education--summed up in one book

A new and much more realistic method for dieting!! Initially I needed to understand the science of weight gain before starting the weight loss program. It is enlightening to learn that losing 10% of my weight was the key to my initial success as well as the health benefits. I welcome this positive, more attainable approach. The silhouettes remind me daily of who I am and where I need to go for this year's weight loss program.

I'm studying the smaller plate size with the visual image of dividing the plate into 4 sections of healthier choices. Finally, the 20-minute eating rule for each meal will be a challenge for me considering my busy schedule, but it clearly seems important. Having recently experienced some cardiac problems, I am particularly interested not only because of the weight control benefits, but also in knowing that some of my cardiac risks will improve.

As a nurse, I find there are many new ideas in this book that will help me educate my patients. For years, I have searched for the knowledge to give them. We did not learn enough of this in nursing school. Now is the opportunity for all nurses to gain this knowledge. After studying this myself, I will refer the book to my colleagues immediately.
