Edith Layton loved to write. She wrote articles and opinion pieces for the New York Times and Newsday, as well as for local papers, and freelanced writing publicity before she began writing novels.

Not particularly dark and dangerous

Jane Chatham is a gentlewoman down on her luck and without family upon whom she can rely. She realises she may be able to make enough money to live on by giving dancing lessons to the children of the nobility and has measured success at this - enough to keep her off the breadline. However when she comes to the notice of various gentlemen as she is giving dancing lessons at the home of Lady Harwood, she finds herself in the middle of some gentle espionage. Simon Atwood, Lord Granger, asks her to give him information on various people who are flocking around Lady Harwood.

It seems that espionage is catching, however, as in due course Lady Harwood and Viscount Delancey also ask Jane to spy for them. However Jane has loyalty to her original employer and keeps in touch with Simon. As they spend more time together it looks like Jane's reputation might be damaged beyond repair, but as Simon has apparently been damaged beyond repair following imprisonment and torture by the French, what chance does she have to smooth her life out? And who might be trying to kill Simon?

This was a gentle story with events floating along and few really exciting moments. The relationship between Simon and Jane felt a bit woolly with no obvious reason, apart from physical appearance, for the two to be attracted to each other. Jane's a strange mix of naivete and common sense and Simon's actions often seemed a bit strange. He went to great efforts to disguise himself and then kept putting Jane in dodgy situations. The spying plot didn't work very well to this reader with the unmasking of the villain no surprise at all. The plot device of Lady Harwood's salons also felt very contrived, as did Jane's various mishaps. All in all this was an inoffensive book but with little really to recommend it.

Decent Read - Not Great

Former spy Simon Atwood, Lord Granger had served his country well at a great personal price, having been captured, tortured and held for over a year in a French prison. Finally home, the only thing that could draw him out of his self-imposed exile from society was the call for help from a friend to complete one more mission. On the surface it seemed simple enough; discover if his friend's younger brother was being toyed with by an older beautiful widow, or if it were just a passing fancy.

Needing someone on the inside to gather servants gossip Simon convinced the very staid and reputable dance teacher, Miss Jane Chatham to report to him any talk regarding the comings and goings of her employer's guests. Even though Jane does not trust the smooth talking, handsome gentlemen, her finances were in dire need of a big boost to get her to the end of this weeks rent. The job seemed innocent enough, but she was definitely having second thoughts about the gentleman!

*** Ms. Layton always comes up with memorable characters that populate her stories, and both Jane Chatham and Simon are easily likeable. Layton's defining character of Jane is a gentlewoman down on her luck - not original and used quite often, but this has been the first time I've seen quite as independently fashioned. Jane is a servant of sorts, but also an independent dance teacher who comes to teach, and not someone who is part of the nobilities household. As such, Jane's comings and goings were not strictly censured by house rules and this allowed the author to capitalize on being able to affect many different espionage type meetings, and rendezvous with Simon.

Simon is something of an enigma and the author played him up as not so much mysterious as cautious, as well as a gentleman and much too nice, in my opinion, to be labeled "dark and dangerous". Sorry, but the title HIS DARK AND DANGEROUS WAYS did not fit this story at all. Right from the outset we learned that Simon had been a prisoner and endured harsh and horrible treatment while imprisoned. It is inferred that he was betrayed by a woman, hence his hesitation in trusting anyone, especially a woman such as Jane. When more than meets the eye in the investigation than a possible May / December romance at Lady Harwood's, Simon's instincts are on the alert including Jane's involvement and trust worthiness, especially after she told Simon that his friend Viscount Delancy and Lady Harwood, had each approached her to report gossip back to them. The mystery started to really evolve.

In the meantime, against her better judgment Jane rather looks forward to her rendezvous' with Simon and gradually falls in love, as does he. Jane knows Simon's rank and her lack of one is a problem. Simon, on the other hand, doesn't give a hoot about rank; but he does have trouble reconciling himself to simply trusting in love. When the investigation unfolds and the person who seems to be at the center is uncovered, Simon who ends up in great danger may never get the chance to give love another chance.

What started out as a fast-paced and even humorous titillating story actually lost speed somewhere in the middle, and along with that my attention. I've read many books by this author that have been non-stop terrific reads, but unfortunately, HIS DARK AND DANGEROUS WAYS fell short in the terrific ranking and only comes up as decent but not great.

Lots of spying and sexual tension.

I enjoyed this book - but I am glad I got it at the Library. I enjoy this genre and I was able to finish this book (unlike some others lately) it was just missing something. Here is my advice if you love this author you might really enjoy this book , if you are on the fence pick it up at the Library and if you only read a book every few months - don't waste your time.

An appropriate and needed perspective

Given the changing nature of instructional design due to ever-evolving technology, Gibbons remark on p. 151 is extremely on point:

"...a creative instructional designer is well advised to read outside of the instructional design literature as well as within it in search of theoretical ideas that may improve designs. Identifying new and useful domain theories from other fields is one of the skills of a mature and innovative designer."

This text is deep and well documented in the manner of a school textbook. Considering the subject matter he is discussing and the approach he is proposing, this is entirely appropriate and needed.

Radically new view of the instructional design process

Gibbons was on to the lessons architects can teach instructional designers about the design process, a full decade before it was cool. It's great to see a book-length synthesis of his work. Any advanced instructional designer should have this book -- and act as if they had it!

Bought as a gift, not sure if she ever read them

Again I bought both box sets for my little sister when she was much younger, this is a review that's over due. However i'm not sure if she ever cracked one open which is unfortunate since many of these stories are children's classics and I found them to be great.

My 7 year old son just reported that this book is funny. He liked the part where the kids were riding stationary bikes to keep electricity running. Mr. Granite shows up in other Weird School books too.

funny stuff...he actually wants to read

I'm just thrilled that my son who is 8, is enjoying to read. He actually gets a kick out of reading the funny parts over to me. Mr Granite was one of his favorite...I guess because he winds up actually being from another planet (MY SON LOVES STAR WARS). If you have a 7 or 8 year old who hates reading then these books may be the answer you've been looking for. Yeah they may be a little easy but why does reading have to be hard. First get them hooked and this is good bait.

Honoring over 420 years of signal achievements by American Women

If the purpose of "Her Story" was to impress the reader with the enormous number of talented and courageous women who have often passed unnoticed in American history, the authors have succeeded remarkably well. Each of the book's 220+ pages is crammed with 10 or more vignettes describing remarkable women who have changed history, whether we knew it or not. The books is laid out in chronological order, starting in 1587with the settling of Roanoke Island by Virginia Dare, among others and stretching to 2007, with the naming of Drew Gilpin Faust to the presidency of Harvard..

This is not a book about the wives and mothers of famous men, though such can be found here as well. The women in the book have each achieved some lasting fame on their own. Dolly Madison is included for saving paintings from a burning White House, not for being First Lady. The same goes for Jackie Kennedy, who is lauded for her efforts to highlight the place of the arts. There are many lesser-known women to celebrate as well. One surprise was to learn that the person behind the Apgar test given to newborns was Dr. Virginia Apgar. Women are positioned chronologically at the pinnacle of their careers, whether at the time of a great achievement or when their achievements were recognized. Nearly every one of the 2000+ descriptions here are accompanied by photographs or paintings made at the time of he women's work. The women included are artists and entrepreneurs, athletes and aesthetes, scientists and executives, cooks and advocates.

Criticisms? By necessity, the descriptions are very short, reducing a woman's life to one or two peak achievements. The progressive side of the ledger is also heavily represented. You will find Mother Cabrini (noted for her work among the poor) but not EWTN's Mother Angelica, Anita Bryant or Tammy Faye Bakker. Too, some may dislike honoring those who advocate for women's reproductive rights. Conservatives (and I believe progressives too) are lauded not for their views, but for the positions they held or the work they performed. If that bothers you, so be it.

"Her Story" is not meant to "include the ladies" for the mere sake of politically correct inclusion. These women have made tremendous achievements, often in a climate of male doubt about their worthiness. The end of the books contains two indices -- one for names and one that groups women by professions, from abolitionist to youth group founder. A wonderfully eye-opening book that speaks volumes about the ability of women to contribute to human experience. An inspiration for anyone -- female or male, old or young -- who needs reminding of the enormous potential of women.

Too short!

So many women! So little space! The strength and weakness of this book: hundreds of women listed--many unknown to the average citizen--who made a difference in this country. And, unfortunately, that large number of women and the timeline format limits how much information can be provided. This is a jumping off point to find out more about the women whose stories pique your interest. Yes, it's a good "coffee table" book, designed to be dipped in leisurely. It's also an eye-opening revelation about the contributions women have made to this country.

superb Victorian paranormal suspense thriller

In 1899 in Clovelly, England Olivia Gavin is looked upon as an eccentric who sleeps during the day and works at night. Nobody connects her to the men who disappear and end up in a place where they have no idea how they got there. She is a vampire who never wanted to be one; her husband Reign turned her against her will on their wedding night. Irate she walked out on him cutting off all ties and has not communicated with him since. A messenger gives her a letter stating her nephew James who she raised has been abducted; if she wants him back alive she is to hand over Reign to them.

She goes to Reign to ask for his help in finding and rescuing James, but conceals the demand she hand him over to his enemies. Reign unexpectedly agrees although he doesn't trust her and knows she is not telling him the entire truth. He demands they behave like husband and wife while on the quest. They learn James went to Scotland with friends who know his aunt is a vampire; their fathers belong to belong to the Order of the Silver Palm who will use Olivia and James as expendable pawns to get the Blood Grail they think Reign has.

This is a stand alone book so the audience will not have to read the previous related tales (see NIGHT OF THE HUNTRESS and TAKEN BY THE NIGHT) although that enhances this Victorian paranormal suspense thriller. The vampires seem real making the hunt for them feel genuine; while the romantic second chance at love subplot is cleverly developed as both have a lot of trust issues to overcome although Reign seems indifferent to his knowing that his wife was going to betray him feels off base. Still LET THE NIGHT BEGIN is an enjoyable vampire historical romantic suspense in which the sleuthing and confrontation is supported by the romance.

Sexy reunion story!

Let the Night Begin is the fourth book in Ms. Smith's exciting Brotherhood of Blood series that tells the stories of five Templar Knights who drank from the unholy Blood Grail over 600 years before. This is Reign's story.

Olivia Gavin needs help. She has just found out that her beloved nephew has been abducted. The "ransom" that the kidnappers ask for is her estranged husband, Reign, who she married thirty years ago and left on their wedding night after he turned her into a vampire without her consent. So, she returns to London to plead with him to help her.

Reign has never stopped loving his wife. He carries a lot of guilt over what happened on their wedding night and still blames himself for her leaving. When Olivia turns up in London asking for his help, he is a bit shocked at first. He also suspects that she isn't telling him everything, but agrees to help her . . . for a price--Olivia must share his bed again. She accepts because she has no other choice. The ransom that the kidnappers ask for is Reign himself, and she has no problem handing him over in exchange for her nephew. But, the more time they spend together, the more they realize how much they have missed one another. And with a deadly enemy who knows their secrets close by, Reign and Olivia will have to work hard to be able to mend their broken relationship and look toward to a future together.

Reign is a terrific hero. He's crude, sarcastic and blunt, yet tender underneath it all when it comes to Olivia. Despite the fact that she left him, he never stopped loving her and would still do anything for her. Reign knows that Olivia hasn't told him the whole story, but is patient and waits for her to tell him when she's ready. All of these traits make him totally sexy in my eyes. (And Ms. Smith writes some of the sexiest heroes!)

At the beginning of the book, Olivia is bitter and stubborn, but devoted. She has raised her nephew, James, for eighteen years, since he was a baby, so she considers him more like a son. It is her love for James that pushes her to plead with Reign for his help. During the course of the book, she really matures as a character and admits to herself and Reign when she is wrong. I really respected that and it made me like her even more.

I thoroughly enjoyed the verbal sparring between Reign and Olivia. It made for some great tension, which led to some really hot love scenes. Really, really hot. I am now eagerly anticipating the final installment in this series, Temple's book. I'm very anxious to see how everything is wrapped up. I highly recommend Let the Night Begin!

Great story about Reign a vampire who married Olivia. On their wedding night he turned Olivia into a vampire and was quite brutal. She left him and disappeared for over 30 years. During that time her sister had a child. Her sister died in an accident and Olivia raised the child as her own. He gets kidnapped and the ransom note demands she trade Reign for the child. So after not seeing him for over 30 years she finds him and goes to him for help. She doesn't tell him that he is the ransom for the boy. After being away from each other for the 30 years there is a lot of conflict between the two and also a lot of guilt from both of them. Olivia is a strong woman who has taken care of herself and done a good job at it. Reign has never given up hope the Olivia will someday come back to him. The writing style was good and the story was interesting. It wasn't the typical paranormal romance. There was some sexual content but not too graphic. I found it to be a good read and look forward to reading more by this author.
