Given the personal nature of this narrative, it's impossible to imagine hearing anyone other than Poitier, with his distinctive, resonant voice and perfect enunciation, tell the story. In his second memoir Poitier talks about his childhood in the Caribbean, where he was terribly poor by American standards, but quite happy, swimming and climbing all he could. One of eight kids, Poitier was sent to live with an older brother in Miami when he started to get into difficulties as a teen. But frustrated by his inability to earn a living and by the disparaging way whites treated him, Poitier left Miami for New York. There he worked as a dishwasher, started a drama class and launched a celebrated acting career that led to starring roles in such classics as To Sir, with Love and Raisin in the Sun. A Valuable Discourse

Being a good little white boy, I knew little about Sidney, but felt respect for him as an actor due, in part, to my discovery of "The Defiant Ones" as a child. (The movie is a powerful work about racism, and I loved it.)

This spiritual autobiography is no judgmental, squeaky-clean depiction of walking with God, nor is it an in-depth detour into the tribal religions available to Sidney as a child in the Bahamas. This book is an open-hearted view of the circumstances and, more importantly, the values that guided Sidney Poitier to the pinnacle of acting. He candidly discusses his failures as husband and father. He speaks lovingly of the example his parents gave him. And he shows the power of holding to your integrity no matter the cost.

By holding to this integrity, Sidney lost some opportunities and also gained respect from the white community, while facing ridicule as a "sell-out" from his own community. What stands out in his story is his desire to bring these communities together with respect, refusing to be dragged down by the bigotry and anger of either side. He speaks powerfully, encouraging us to focus anger in a positive way.

Mr. Poitier writes in an eloquent, yet communicative style. At times, he borders on unfocused rambling, but even then he has worthy things to say. This book is a valuable discourse on never giving up on your goals, on reaching beyond yourself to be who you were truly created to be. Thank you, Sidney, for your time.

Glad to Be Alive

I grew up in the South and, when I was in high school in the early sixties, Mr. Poitier's two blockbusters, "Raison in the Sun" and "Lilies of the Field" came out. There was something about him, even then, that caught my attention. Who WAS this man? It always seemed he was a "thinker" - a "seeker" - a bit restless with himself.

I recently picked up The Measure of a Man and my curiosity made me read it. Who IS this man - I wanted at last to find out.

The book begins in Cat Island, the Bahamas where he was born and lived during his early years. As Mr. Poitier describes his youth, it is reflective and feels like an intimate fireside conversation with a friend talking about a loved one departed. There is gratitude and respect - a certain remorse for doing some "kid things" that are so hurtful to those you truly love - and a reexamination of some of the "truths" he was taught.

Then the autobiography goes from there onto other stages in his life where he interacts with the realities and the illusions of life and comes to a sense of who he is and what is important. I guess I expected more of a "success story" about someone who is obviously very accomplished. What I got instead was a very touching and poignant sharing of a personal journey of a man making his way through life - no better and no worse than anyone else - immune from neither happiness nor disappointment - but glad to be alive.

Because so much of Mr. Poitier's autobiography had to do with things both good and challenging that just showed up in his life, it reminded me of another book by Ariel & Shya Kane called Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. In Being Here, the Kanes talk about things that have happened in their lives in a very light way that demonstrates how they and we can experience life more fully and more deeply - by just "being there" for what's happening when it's happening.

I really enjoyed reading both of these books and recommend them

Great Actor - Gifted Author!

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. While I do not always enjoy autobiographies, this book is a great exception. It is not just filled with dates and facts. It reaches inside the man and into his very soul. From his beginning on Cat Island, to today's highly successful life as an actor, Sidney Poitier has had an incredible life. He was blessed early in life with the greatest blessing anyone can have - great parents! This book made me stop and think of all the many blessings in my life, too many of which I take for granted sometimes. I hope that everyone who reads this book, and especially young people, will benefit from his insight and wisdom.

About the Author

Writer and editor Howard Mittelmark's book reviews and essays have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Hollywood Reporter, Writer's Digest, and other publications. He is the author of the novel Age of Consent.

Sandra Newman is the author of The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done, which was short-listed for the Guardian First Book Award. Hilarious!

Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman give us a handy guide: How Not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them–A Misstep-by-Misstep Guide. The points it makes are dead-on, although with that many topics it shouldn’t be surprising that I disagreed with at least parts of several items. They have entertaining names for the problems they bring up, such as “The Long Runway.” They point out that in most books that include recounting a character’s childhood, it’s to no helpful purpose. They include the idea that you should be writing plots, not gripes.

It’s been a while since I last reviewed a writing book; I forgot how interesting they can be. The only thing that bugged me a bit in this one is the fact that some entries adhere to the book’s hilarious premise: i.e., encouraging the reader to use these types of bad writing in order to deliberately not get published. Unfortunately, some of the entries go back to ‘normal’, explaining what the writer should not do. It’s mildly confusing.

The “Benign Tumor” is a portion that can be cut out of the novel without harming the book as a whole. They point out that it’s primarily a problem of first drafts, but I’ve read books that would be much better if the author had cut out the first 10-30 percent of the book. The sample texts are made up by the authors and are one of my favorite parts of the book. They range from sly humor to utter hilarity.

They fully admit that these are ‘observations’ and not rules. And in some specific cases they talk about writers that made something work for them that really won’t work for most other authors, and explain why. There are sections on characterization (bad guys, sidekicks, ‘too good to be true’ protagonists, likable heroes), plotting, pacing, endings, dialogue, exposition, rendering foreign accents, style, interior monologues, and so on.

This is a delightful, fun book that left me laughing out loud. It also did a great job of firming up my notions of how these things don’t work.

Informative and Entertaining

Pros: Offers advice in a non-absolutist, entertaining manner, clearly shows how misusing techniques can lead to disaster with humorous examples, has many, many tips.

Cons: Occasionally gets a bit too caught up in the humor and not enough on the advice.

This book offers a very large selection of things to avoid when writing your novel which is in many ways more helpful than all the books that tell you what to do. Most authors don't want to feel like they are writing to template and the writing process is different for each individual person, but it is also good to know what to avoid, what tends to make a novel unsuccessful. There is advice on many different aspects of writing a novel from plotting to writing to characters.

This book is also short on absolutes (though there are some). Many writing books declare dramatically that you should "never" do a certain thing and all the while I am naming half a dozen best selling and/or critically acclaimed novels that do just that. This book tends to acknowledge that some of its rules can be broken to good effect -- you just have to be careful how you do it.

The best feature, though, is the humor. The made up "examples" that the authors provide are hilarious and often give you a much more vivid picture of what is meant by the tip than the explanation alone. For a few of the tips, I think that the authors got a little too caught up in making the examples funny so that I would forget what I they were supposed to demonstrate, but this was rare.

A very non-pretentious, helpful read. So entertaining that I read through it in a day which I cannot say of any other writing books I've read. 5 stars.

A useful compilation of pitfalls for the new author

A well done and breezy compilation of the pitfalls new authors fall into. Much of the information was old news to me, which isn't a fault of the author. I read dozens of how-to books before I put finger to keyboard. But I was pleased to be reminded of a whole bunch of traps I'd forgotten about. A useful, accessible book.

About the Author

Born in Sydney, Chistopher Tadgell studied art history at the Courtauld Institute in London and subsequently taught architectural history for almost thirty years before devoting himself full time to writing and research, travelling worldwide to examine and photograph buildings from every tradition and period. He is a Trustee of the World Monuments Fund, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities and a member of both the British and American Societies of Architectural History. His History of Architecture in India is the definitive one-volume account, whilst his publications on French architecture include the standard account in Baroque and Rococo Architecture and Decoration.

3 authors, 3 romances, and 1 seamless novel.

(Correction: Make that 4 romances because the married couple who host the house party, setting for the novel, also have a lovely and romantic relationship.)

I don't often enjoy book compilations by various authors because the books are usually made up of individual and separate stories. This one, besides being written by 2 of my favorite HR authors and 1 that used to be a fave, is actually one novel with 3 romances woven into it pretty seamlessly. Everything takes place at a country house party given by Lady Carolyn Finchley to find a wife for her brother Hugh Dunne, the Earl of Briarly. Many eligible young ladies are invited and also worthy gentlemen to round out the numbers. The book is great fun, light-hearted and romantic with very likeable characters. The plot is not at all unusual. It's the formulaic house party romance, but it is developed deftly and humorously and is well written because all the contributors are skilled and experienced writers of HRs.

Those readers who are familiar with the writing styles of these 3 authors will be able to tell where one author's contribution merges into the next one's (especially the transition from Quinn to Brockway) but it is not too obvious or awkward, but rather a smooth transition that maintains the characters' personalities and way of behaving throughout the novel.

This is a book to read when you're in the mood for a feel-good, warm, romantic story. No angst, no Big Understandings, no Dark Secrets, no villains or abductions. Nothing but character-driven love stories. Keep in mind that because there are three romances in one novel, they are not in the depth that you might like. I enjoyed the book for the novelty of it and the skill of the authors.

Gold in the form of a beautifully written and well constructed story.

The plot of "The Lady Most Willing," is what makes historical romance such an entertaining genre. The notion that an aging Scotsman would kidnap Scottish ladies in a hope that his half-Scottish nephews will marry a Scot so that their children can be mostly Scottish is outlandish and hilarious. Add in the names Connie Brockway, Eloisa James and Julia Quinn, have them work together on a collaboration and you have gold in the form of a beautifully written and well constructed story.

Better than an Anthology "The Lady Most Willing" is a story told in three parts about a group of titled gentleman and well to do ladies who are thrown together in a frozen castle. Because its the highlands during a snow storm no one is able to leave the castle and no one is able to come to their rescue. They are stuck together and must make due.

Julia Quinn brings charm, hilarious dialogue and her beautiful writing to the story of Catriona Burns and the Duke of Bretton. Kidnapped by accident, Catriona because she was wearing a similar shade of blue to one of the other ladies and Bretton due to the fact he was asleep in his carriage when it was stolen by Taran's men, Catrina and the duke are forgotten and left to their own devices. They bond over a warm fire and the bond of friendship soon turns into something more heated. It becomes a question of whether two people can fall in love, not at first sight, but at first serious conversation.

The ever controlled lord Byron and the spectacle wearing Fiona with the tarnished reputation are brought to life by the romantic descriptions of Eloisa James. Having escaped to Scotland after his engagement was ended amidst scandal, Lord Byron is shocked when his uncle kidnaps a gaggle of women for he and his cousin to choose their wives. With duty and honor in mind, Byron decides not to look a gift horse in the mouth and sets his eyes on the beautiful Marilla. After one interaction Bryon changes his mind and takes refuge from the young lady with her older sister, Fiona. What starts as a means to an end, transforms into romance and Byron must decide whether he can shame his family by marrying a fallen woman.

Robin the "Prince of Rakes" and Cecily who is "every mother-in-laws dream" is the creation of Connie Brockway. In the case of Robin and Cecily it's love at first sight. The minute they lay eyes on each other they both know they have found the partner of their future life. Believing no lady could love him, Robin does not make a move. Unwilling to lose her chance at what could be forever love, Cecily decides to take matters into her own hands and seduce the Prince of Rakes.

Three different stories from three different authors with different writing styles. all three authors are talented and tell well formed short stories. Julia Quinn takes the first third of the book and while she beautifully crafts her own story, she drops in subtle hints to foreshadow the other stories. By the time the story of Catriona and Bretton wraps up, Quinn has dropped enough bread crumbs that you simply must read the rest of the book.

Personally, I enjoyed Quinn's story the best, but was so invested in the tale I kept up with the story and thoroughly enjoyed.

About the Author

Oded Shenkar is the Ford Motor Company Chair in Global Business Management and Professor of Management and Human Resources at Ohio State University, USA. A Fellow and past Vice President of the Academy of International Business, he has authored numerous books and over a hundred articles.

Yadong Luo is the Emery M. Findley Jr. Distinguished Chair of Graduate Business Studies and Professor of Management at the University of Miami, USA. He is an author of over a dozen books, and over a hundred journal articles, and is a Fellow of The Academy of International Business.

Tailan Chi is Professor of International Business and Carl. A. Scupin Faculty Fellow at the University of Kansas, USA. About the Author

William Anderson is a historian, educator, and author of twenty-five books of biography, travel, and history. His groundbreaking research on Laura Ingalls Wilder and her books led to many HarperCollins titles, including Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Biography, Laura Ingalls Wilder Country, and A Little House Sampler. He has also written for Travel & Leisure, the Saturday Evening Post, the Christian Science Monitor, and many other national magazines. Anderson is a frequent speaker at conferences, schools, and libraries. He makes his home in Michigan.

William Anderson has written extensively about the Ingalls and Wilder families. His books include Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Biography, Laura Ingalls Wilder Country and most recently, The Laura Ingalls Wilder Country Cookbook, for which he wrote the commentary. He lives in Lapeer, MI.

Leslie A. Kelly has widely photographed the many Little House sites nad artifacts. His photographs may also be seen in The Laura Ingalls Wilder Country Cookbook and Laura Ingalls Wilder Country. He lives in Huntington Beach, CA.

Invaluable Resource for Little House Fans

William Anderson has done a fabulous job in painstakingly documenting everything there is to see from New York to South Dakota that has anything to do with Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series. Ever wondered what happened to Pa's fiddle? Or if the house dug out from the banks of Plum Creek is still intact? This book has the answers. Complete with color photographs, addresses, phone numbers and maps, as well as ample background information, The Little House Guidebook is a must have for Little House fans everywhere.
