A Time to Read, A Time to Weep and A Time to Laugh
By Mamalinde
This is a book to buy - in multiple copies. Mr. Gulley take Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, and with his easy going charm, small town simplicity and devotion to God, gives us all a spiritual hug. From discussion on prejudices (a time to refrain from embracing) to three things you shouldn't live without (a time to keep silence), there is much that is rich and deep to learn and to celebrate. And officially why Summer is the Very Best Season. If you think this book is not for you, because after all, you are not a Quaker - you are sadly mistaken. Mr. Gulley's simple writings and pleasing commentaries will enrich and delight everyone. I will send my copy on to Auntique Bea (who says of Home to Harmony: "picked up Harmony and in a few pages I discovered anew the charm of the book. I keep it out on the coffee table to I can skim through it at any time.") I will try to keep a stock to have on hand when a friend needs cheering. I can unequivocally say that it is just as charming as Home to Harmony, perhaps even more so.

A Book that Cured my Homesickness!!!
By A Customer
Right now I am in Evansville at college. Today I was in a bookstore and finally decided to buy this book. I'm from Danville, and have lived there all of my life. My whole family has lived here since my great-grandparents moved here LONG ago. After reading "For Everything A Season," I feel like I'm back in Danville again. I personally knew Adam (the boy from the chapter A Time to Heal: One September). This story made me cry. It happened almost two years ago. Other stories hit me personally. I have my memories from the Royal Theater, Blanton Woods, and flooded basements. If you are from a small town and want to reminisce, or from a big city and want to know what you're missing from small town living, this is the book for you. Mr. Gulley did a wonderful job. I have heard him speak before at a convention for Student Council, and he was wonderful. You'll love this book.

Touching and joyfilled book about a special, real town.
By Raymond F. Rodenbeck (rfr1437@juno.com)
Danville isn't a pretend place. It's my town. Phil Gulley brings it to life with humor, love, and best of all, with God's grace. I would want to pack up and move here if I wasn't already so blessed. He is a male version of Erma Bombeck, able to make the reader laugh, cry, and see their own world in his pages. He takes the everyday journey of life, and illuminates it. The love of God shines through these same, everyday moments. If you are from a small town, you will see your life; but if you are from New York City, you will still find company in the human race so tenderly portrayed. DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK! It is a like a sunset at the end of a wonderful day. Connie Rodenbeck, Danville, Indiana

From Publishers Weekly
Leading up to Superman being jettisoned in a capsule to Earth, Anderson reveals the political and private world of Krypton as it descends into chaos and eventual destruction. Superman's father, Jor-El, strives to restore stability to the decaying planet while also dealing with the power-hungry Zod, who has seized power. Though expertly interlacing the various threads of Krypton's mythology, Anderson's novel as a whole feels more like a poor apocalyptic warning to our society mirrored by events such as a tsunami, a world leader with a propaganda machine and a pre-emptive doctrine, and a foreign assault on a Krypton cultural center. Yet Dufris makes the listening very enjoyable. His steady and nuanced narration really shines in his vocal characterizations. He embodies Jor-El in a way that matches the story's mood and reveals the inner turmoil facing the esteemed scientist thrust into the world of politics. He also deftly delivers the character of Zod, eliciting the arrogance and avarice of the aspiring dictator.

Review
“This Superman prequel is action-packed, depicting a lost world in fanatic detail…. Sci-fi of Miltonic ambition.” ---Kirkus

From the Back Cover

Everyone knows how Kal-El—Superman—was sent to Earth just before his planet exploded. But what led to such a disaster? Now, in The Last Days of Krypton, Kevin J. Anderson presents a sweeping tale of the pomp and grandeur, the intrigue and passion, and the politics and betrayals of a doomed world filled with brave heroes and cruel traitors.

Against the spectacular backdrop of Krypton's waning halcyon days, there is the courtship and marriage of Kal-El's parents, the brilliant scientist Jor-El and his historian wife, Lara. Together they fight to convince a stagnant, disbelieving society that their world is about to end. Jor-El's brother, Zor-El, leader of the fabled Argo City, joins the struggle not only to save the planet but also to fight against the menace of the ruthless and cunning General Zod.

The diabolical Zod, future archenemy of Superman, avails himself of a golden opportunity to seize power when the android Brainiac captures the capital city of Kandor. As Zod's grip on the populace tightens and his power grows, he too is blind to all the signs that point to the death of the very civilization he is trying to rule.

Through all of this, Jor-El and Lara's love for each other, their history, and their son allows for Krypton to live on even as the planet is torn apart around them. For in the escape of their baby lies Krypton's greatest gift—and Earth's greatest hero.

The Last Days of Krypton is a timeless, ground-breaking exploration of a world that has never been fully defined, and reveals the extraordinary origins of a legend that has never ceased to amaze and astound generation after generation.

I wasn't sure what to think when I picked this one up. Kevin J. Anderson has written a lot of books, and the ones I've read have been good, but not great. I thought his Star Wars novels seemed.... simplistic. I thought his Dune novels (at least the ones I've read) came across as unfocused, relating a series of events as opposed to a coherent story. But, I picked this one up as I'm a die hard Superman fan, after reading a couple good reviews. Wow. I was totally blown away. The book did a number of things I would have thought possible. It told a remarkable and engaging Superman story, without Superman in it. It made General Zod interesting (I have always hated that character) And it even took what I considered to be the dumbest bit of Superman lore (the bottled city of Kandor) and made it into the Superman equivalent of 9-11. This is not a good book. This is a great book. Highly recommended for Superman fans, Sci-fi fans, and just about anyone who likes a good book. Go pick it up, and read it, and then try and tell me I'm wrong!

Good, but Could Be Better
By Avid Reader
When I first heard Kevin J. Anderson would be writing a novel about events leading to the destruction of Krypton I was quite looking forward to his take on this classic mythology. For the most part I was pleased with Anderson's version, but I had two major quibbles. One, I thought his portrayal of Jor-El as a rather weak, easily duped man was too different from what we've all come to know from the many comic book variations. Second, I thought Anderson spent far too much time on the Zod story; it really bogged down the middle part of the book. What I do give Anderson credit for is taking the many different variations on the Krypton mythology, including the films and Smallville, while adding his own original ideas, to create his version of this timeless tale. I also thought it was an ingenious idea to make his Krypton a society of Luddites. Overall, this was a good effort, and as with any Anderson novel the final pages concluded at an action-packed, break-neck speed.

More than an origin, a masterwork of Sci-Fi
By Madelyn Pryor
If you're interested in this book, you're probably either a Superman fan or a fan of Kevin J. Anderson. If so, you're going to love this book. However, even if you're just a fan of good old fashioned science fiction, you should buy this book. I will tell you why you should buy this book for those reasons, or even more.

Firstly, for Superman fans, this book is a gold mine. Yes, it's true that Kal-El doesn't show up until the last few pages (and he's a newborn infant), but so many other characters, essential to Superman's back story. Of course, Superman's parents, Lara and Jor-El are here, and their history is richly explored. They become more than holographic images, they become people. Zod has always been a great villain, but he becomes a fascinating character here. J'onn J'onzz and Brainiac make appearances.

For Kevin J Anderson fans, this book is also great. It has Anderson's usual grand scope. He can really bring world's to life (and then destroy them). I enjoy Anderson because he is an archeologist of worlds the rest of us can't see, and he can find a way to show us every detail of those worlds... to make them real to the rest of us. You have to love his work for that.

But if you're a fan of plain, old fashioned science fiction, you'll also love this book. It's about a world we'll never be to, in the far reaches of space, trying to navigate its way through alien attacks, insane despots, and one disaster after another. Through it all, the characters remain resolute in finding the best solution... even to the very end.

After reading this book, I can't think of a single reason that you wouldn't want to get it and give it a read. It's just a plain good read.

Highest Recommendations.

A Ticket to Ride: A Novel, by Paula McLain

"It was August. For years it was August . . . . There was heat like wet gauze and a high, white sky and music coming from everywhere at once."

In the long, hot Illinois summer of 1973, insecure, motherless Jamie falls under the dangerous spell of her older, more worldly cousin Fawn, who's come to stay with Jamie and her uncle as penance for committing an "unmentionable act." It is a time of awakenings and corruptions, of tragedy and loss, as Jamie slowly discovers the extent to which Fawn will use anything and anyone to further her own ends—and recognizes, perhaps too late, her own complicity in the disaster that takes shape around them.

From Publishers Weekly
The summer of 1973 in Moline, Ill., is enlivened and permanently marked for 15-year-old Jamie by the arrival of her charismatic, seen-it-all cousin, Fawn Delacorte, in McLain's sure-handed if familiar debut novel (after the memoir Like Family). Abandoned by her parents as a baby, Jamie is a lonely, naïve teenager from Bakersfield, Calif., sent to live with her uncle Raymond after her grandmother falls sick. She falls under Dawn's spell and embraces the dissolute life of layabout teenagers, brushing ever closer to the inevitable tragedy to come. McLain alternates her vivid first-person account of Jamie's initially glorious summer with Raymond's recollections of his fraught relationship with Suzette, his younger sister and Jamie's mother. The echoes between past and present, Jamie and Suzette, and between Suzette and Fawn ring ever louder as the novel progresses, and protectors clash with those they vainly try to protect. McLain has a good ear for the dialogue of hormonally crazed, unpredictable teenagers. But 1970s childhoods are well-trod literary territory, and it feels as if this tale has already been told. (Jan.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—Abandoned by her mother when she was a baby, Jamie has lived with her elderly grandparents until recently, when she was uprooted to live with her emotionally detached uncle Raymond. She is 15 in 1973, when her worldly wise cousin Fawn, 16, arrives to spend the summer with them. Insecure and lonely, Jamie loves the idea of having a live-in friend and she immediately falls under Fawn's spell. Wanting more than anything to have Fawn approve of her, Jamie begins to remake herself, and a foreboding sense of the future emerges. Woven throughout the story are flashbacks that shed light on the intense and disturbing relationship between Uncle Raymond and Jamie's mother, Suzette. The parallel stories of Suzette and Fawn shed light on two people who are both disturbed and manipulative. Raymond and Jamie are the victims of the manipulation, but McLain deftly conveys the poor choices each has made along the way. Beautiful writing makes vivid the stark malevolence of Fawn, and the foreshadowing of impending tragedy is so palpable it is frightening. Characters are well drawn and the prose magnificent. Teens will appreciate the dramatic events that lead to tragedy and will ultimately root for Jamie and her uncle.—Jane Ritter, Mill Valley School District, CA

haunting & beautifully written

This novel is a treasure -- it simultaneously captures the hopefulness of a coconut-scented summer's day and the loneliness of a girl who yearns for female intimacy. Who hasn't been there? McLain's descriptions of Jamie's internal and external worlds bring it all back.

Having read all of McLain's poetry and her memoir, her new novel is no surprise. The writing is sensual and heartbreaking, the study of character honest and deep. The secrets that connect Jamie and her uncle will haunt you just as they do their characters.

If you liked Dorothy Allison's Ruth Anne in [...] out of NC or Carson McCullers's Frankie in The Member of the Wedding or Marilyn Robinson's Ruth in Housekeeping, then you'll like Paula McLain's Jamie in A Ticket to Ride.

Read this novel & then go back and read McLain's other work. You won't be sorry.

LYRICAL COMING-OF-AGE TALE....
By Laurel-Rain Snow
In the long hot summer of 1973, two young teenage girls push the boundaries, hoping to experience whatever it will take to make them cool, sexy, and happy.

For Jamie, the exploration is about a motherless girl searching for approval and acceptance, which is why she is so willing to follow the lead of her cousin Fawn, who has ended up in Moline, Illinois because she is trouble personified. Fawn's version of the events that brought her to Illinois casts her in the most positive light possible. And to Jamie, who has been shunted back and forth between relatives after her mother Suzette took off one day years before, Fawn's behavior may send up red flags, but she is ill-equipped to interpret the signs.

A Ticket to Ride: A Novel (P.S.) alternates between Jamie's point of view and her Uncle Raymond's, and as we follow the story arcs of the two characters, the picture fills in and presents the full story. Each chapter is titled with songs from the era, and sometimes, I could almost hear the music lilting in the background.

As the summer draws to a close, these two young girls seeking excitement have stumbled upon a whole world of trouble and tragedy.

As Jamie is trying to sort out and understand what has happened, she and her uncle finally sit down to talk, and in a few moments of soul-searching honesty, Jamie learns the whole saga about her mother and what happened so long ago. Examining the realities of the past and revisiting the moments of one hot summer full of errors in judgment, Jamie will finally begin to discover her place and her identity.

The characters are multilayered, with all the facets of real people trying to make sense of their lives, the choices they've made, and the possibilities that are left for them. Four stars for an insightful story that, while it may not be for everyone, is a relevant coming-of-age tale set during a unique time in history.

Review

"This text is highly readable yet comprehensive enough to cover all areas of research knowledge needed by social work practitioners. It is neither too simplistic, nor too rigorous and it arouses the interest of students with research experience as well as those who are novices. I highly recommend this well-written, social work- specific resource."―Mark Cederburg, University of Kansas

"I have been teaching research methods to social work students for over 25 years and wish I had come across this text earlier. Its organization corresponds very well to the demands of social work practice, addressing vital topics ranging from single-subject design to evidence-based practice. This book will help prepare social work graduates to actively conduct the studies necessary to enhance policy, service-delivery and practice."―Amanda Barusch, University of Utah

"Krysik and Finn have written a research book that makes research easy to read and comprehend. It helps the social work student understand how they can (and should) evaluate their own practice once they graduate and enter the social work field. What an invaluable lesson!"―Laura Myers, Florida A&M University

"This book is the most student-friendly textbook I have used. The research content is comprehensive and provides students with tools and many real life examples. The option to use Excel for data analysis is beneficial for students to transition over to SPSS. Moreover, the resources for the instructor help on class preparation since lessons can be modified easily."―Suk-Young Kang, University of Texas at Arlington

"Readers will be pleasantly surprised to see a social work research text that includes fresh topics honestly addressed. Research knowledge and skills are portrayed as the power to thoughtfully pose and systematically answer important questions for our clients, agencies and society at large."―Kia Bentley, Virginia Commonwealth University

"With the increasing importance of evidence-based practice in social work, this clearly written, student-friendly book serves as a valuable introduction to the topic. A very good place to start the process of understanding research."― Joel Fischer, University of Hawaii

I wasn't looking forward to have to read this textbook, but I had the wrong impression. The text makes all the concepts easily understandable and includes a lot of case examples to help you relate the concepts to practice.

Political Institutions and Lesbian and Gay Rights in the United States and Canada (Routledge Studies in North American Politics), by Miria

Lesbian and gay citizens today enjoy a much broader array of rights and obligations and a greater ability to live their lives openly in both the U.S. and Canada. However, while human rights protections have been exponentially expanded in Canada over the last twenty years, even basic protections in areas such as employment discrimination are still unavailable to many in the United States. This book examines why these similar societies have produced such divergent policy outcomes, focusing on how differences between the political institutions of the U.S. and Canada have shaped the terrain of social movement and counter-movement mobilization. It analyzes cross-national variance in public policies toward lesbians and gay men, especially in the areas of the decriminalization of sodomy, the passage of anti-discrimination laws, and the enactment of measures to recognize same-sex relationships.

Review

"This arresting book historically interrogates the relationship between sexuality and social policy development in the United States and Canada. A must read for scholars of sexuality and of political development, Smith's study helps us to see how conflict over cultural issues can map through institutional developmental dynamics and then how these dynamics can reformulate cultural struggles. The book also provides a finely grained explanation of the interplay among legal-institutional development, the discourse of rights, and lesbian and gay movement politics. Political Institutions and Lesbian and Gay Rights in the United States and Canada is the definitive analysis of the relationship between sexuality and political development – and shows clearly why this relationship must be understood by any serious student of politics."

Julie Novkov

Associate Professor of Political Science and Women’s Studies, University at Albany, SUNY

"No serious student of both social movements and democratic constitutionalism can fail to profit from this pathbreaking comparative study. Anyone committed to human rights in general and gay rights in particular will better understand how and why the United States has in some areas fallen so far behind other constitutional democracies once inspired by the American example."

David A.J. Richards

Edwin D. Webb Professor of Law, New York University, author of The Case for Gay Rights and Women, Gays, and the Constitution

"Miriam Smith takes the evolution of gay and lesbian rights in Canada and the United States in a new direction. Through her careful analysis of the institutions through which policies unfold over time, she enriches our understanding of how and why the two countries differ today."

Mildred A. Schwartz

Visiting scholar at New York University and Emerita Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago

"Smith's thoughtful examination of the greater recognition offered to gays and lesbians in Canada versus the United States provides a compelling case for why political institutions really do matter. Policy legacies, federalism, the separation of powers, the role of courts and political timing all play a part in this fascinating account of LGBT rights. Moving beyond public opinion and religious culture, Smith provides an incisive analysis of sexuality as a key system of power that is more comprehensively understood through American political development and new institutionalist frameworks."

Susan Burgess

Professor of Political Science and Women's Studies, Ohio University

"This work is a contribution to the fields of LGBT studies, Canadian politics, and comparative politics more generally.  Summing Up: Recommended.  General readers, upper-division undergraduate students, graduate students, and research faculty." - CHOICE, April 2009 Vol. 46 No. 08

Gripping read
By M. Orsini
This book has something for everyone. For those looking for the cutting edge of historical institutionalist analysis, there is no need to look any farther. For those interested in the comparative politics of lesbian and gay activism, there are profound insights, especially in a policy field that has been largely determined - I would say overdetermined - by cultural studies-type analyses. And for those concerned with the complex questions associated with intersectionality, and how race in particular has played a singular, defining role in how human rights issues are framed or not, this is a particularly gripping read. We need more analyses that position lesbian and gay politics as a proper site of study, especially those anchored in traditional frameworks or approaches such as institutionalist analysis.

Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of BTK, the Serial Killer Next Door, by Roy Wenzl, Tim Potter, Hurst Laviana, L. Kelly

For thirty-one years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named "BTK"—for "bind them, torture them, kill them"—he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader—a friendly neighbor . . . a devoted husband . . . a helpful Boy Scout dad . . . the respected president of his church.

Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than twenty years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare told by the people who were there from the beginning. With newly released documents, evidence, and information—and with the full cooperation, for the very first time, of the Wichita Police Department’s BTK Task Force—the authors have put all the pieces of the grisly puzzle into place, thanks to their unparalleled access to the families of the killer and his victims.

Poorly written
By I E Liter8
I'm a fan of true crime books and have read most of them. I was very interested in reading about the BTK killer because he's not one of the well known serial killers that the media covers all the time (ie. Jeffry Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Zodiac etc.) but he was equally frightening. I did not know how he committed his crimes and who the victims were. The book definitely described in detail how he went about committing his crimes and gave way too much detail about the detectives (and people who were not involved in the case). The book was poorly written and/or edited. There were stories that lead to nowhere and then the next paragraph would jump to something else unrelated to what was previously discussed. I felt it jumped around way too much and should have been edited and organized in a clear manner. I would have liked to know less detail about every detective and more detail about how BTK became this monster and how his crimes affected the people of Wichita and his victims. If you must read this book, just skip through the chapters about the detectives.

I liked the details of the investigation and police work. Details of crimes are intense but this is a bad guy.

Women and Exercise: The Body, Health and Consumerism (Routledge Research on Sport, Culture and Society)From Routledge

Exercise for women is a heavily-laden social and embodied experience. While exercise promotion has become an increasingly visible part of health campaigns, obesity among women is rising, and studies indicate that women are generally less physically active than men. Women’s (lack of) exercise, therefore, has become a public concern, and physiological and psychological research has attempted to develop more effective exercise programs aimed at women. Yet women have a complex relationship with embodiment and physical activity that is difficult for quantitative scientific approaches to explore. This book addresses this neglect by providing a much-needed feminist, qualitative social analysis of women and exercise. The contributors, drawn from across Europe and North America, investigate the ways women experience exercise within the context of the global fitness industry. All the authors take a specifically feminist perspective in their analysis of the fit, feminine body, exploring media images and the global branding of fitness products, the relationship between exercise and fat, the construction of physical activity within health discourse, and the lived experience of the exercising body. The collection explores the diversity of women’s experiences of exercise in relation to age, ethnicity and body size. The book is essential for anyone interested in health promotion, sport and exercise or the social and cultural study of gender and embodiment.

Review

'The essays provide particular insight into the various methodologies feminist researchers use when they engage in qualitative analysis of sociocultural conditions. These perspectives are not commonly represented in the media, and when they are proffered they are typically marginalized....This book is an invaluable resource for those invested in injecting health information into the public conversation.' – J. A. McClung, Berea College, Recommended title, CHOICE
