Brilliant, subversive, profound

I was toying with the idea of writing my first on-line review, but Juan of Columbia has pushed me to do it today. Anyone who couldn't find a plot in this novel, couldn't find a pit in an apricot!

This glorious book -- which seems so accessible, and indeed, is accessible - uses language and style with elegance and depth and tells a story of such importance, that I can't imagine anyone not being moved and even changed by the reading.

There are so few novels about men, their place in their families and in the family of man. This is just, simply, one of a kind. It may be the most satisfying book I've ever read.

I've now shared "Ireland" with a number of friends and we all feel the same way. Just bowled over.

So - Juan, thank you for the inspiration to write and share my views - in hopes that I can inspire more folks to pick this up and find, in it's pages, their own ideas about family and history, secrets and stories, what it is we were meant to be and what it is we leave behind.

A Unexpectedly Fabulous Read

The title, "Ireland - A Novel" does nothing to let readers understand that this is a beautifully written and engrossing tale. The characters are very believable and you become attached to them more quickly than you might imagine. However the true heroes of the book are the stories, the myths and the legends of Irish history that Delaney brings to life so clearly and with such depth of feeling you feel part of each one. I now know more about Ireland than I ever expected but I never felt I was learning. I hope anyone who can will take a chance and read this amazing novel.

Interesting approach to connect the dots

I did enjoy the approach that the writer took by incorporating the folklore and history of Ireland while a young boy, turned adult, searched for a traveling storyteller. The sub plot of his Mom and Aunt's secret added no value to the book for me. The mystery of the storyteller was sufficient. I did find the book to be a slow read for me. I finished it because I ultimately wanted to know about the life of storyteller. That outcome was plausible and a nice ending.

About the Author

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up.

Instead she became a librarian. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born!

Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. Dear Mr. Henshaw won the Newbery Medal, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. Her characters, including Beezus and Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, have delighted children for generations.

Ramona And Her Mother

I am a 44 year old security guard, and this book was given to me by a fireman. I have read it about 400 times. This is the most endearing book I have ever read, and I read a lot of books.

Poor little Ramona is seven years old, and she gets into more trouble trying to be good than anyone I know...except when I was that age...

From wasting the toothpaste to wearing her wonderful new pajamas under her clothes to school, she certainly reminds us of our own childhood...(in my case it was shaving lather). I am online to find other Ramona books.

Ramona and her Mother

Ramona and her Mother.
I bought this for my grand daughter. My daughter is an Air Force Police Officer and she was just deployed to Katar. My grand daughters birthday is March 15 she will be 8, so I thought the Ramona books would be perfect for her. My daughter was able to share "Ramona and her Mother" with my grand baby, in fact they finished the book the night before my daughter was deployed. I used to read these books to my girls when they were little and thought what a perfect memory to leave my grand daughter with. Not even realizing that I helped create a wonderful memormy for my daughter to take with her to Katar as well. This year has been especially tough on them; my daughters 2 month old son died of SIDS in August and found out she was deploying soon after. Thank you for getting these books to them on time in England. It means more these words could ever tell you.

Adult/High School—Viewed from the outside, Sontag's Illinois childhood was stereotypically American upper middle class—a physician father, social-worker mother, two girls, a house with a yard and a dog. Behind that facade, Sontag says, was a dysfunctional family ruled by a man who consistently berated, humiliated, and bullied his children and his wife. Particularly onerous were the "middle of the night" sessions, wherein Rachel was summoned downstairs for yet another recitation of her failings that ended only when she admitted to being a selfish, negligent rule-breaker. She rails against her father's obsessive and "sick" conduct, yet seems especially angry with her mother, whose weakness she finds repellent. Only by physically removing herself from the household could she begin to achieve independence, repair her self-image, and, eventually, come to terms with parents she could neither live with nor change. Some may find her self-pitying and will question her precise quotation of conversations that occurred years ago. Yet her book is a memoir; it does not pretend to be anything other than what it is: one daughter's perspective of life under a man who, in her eyes, chose to play the role of despot rather than that of loving and forgiving husband and father. Engaging and revealing

For those who are doubtful of the truth behind this writing, it is unfortunate that it seems that either Amazon or Rachel's father removed his review of the book. It was very telling and confirmed for me everything that she states happened to her at the hands, and mind, of her father. This book is a good read, as it is interesting and quick, since the style tends to be conversational. Three-quarters of the book involve the difficulty that Rachel endured as a child, teen, and young adult. By the last 5 chapters, she is involved in more reflection and analysis of her experiences, and what she can resolve them to be so that she can continue on with her life. This book hit home for me for I had a difficult childhood, and at times had a hard time dealing with my father who often became extremely angry and threatening. I see myself in dealing with it more like Rachel's sister Jenny, still wanting normalcy and not understanding why it couldn't occur. My experiences, however, were nothing compared to the humiliation that Rachel suffered. I think that the reason that some people (maybe her parents?) have difficulty admitting that the situation was abusive is because when we hear of abused children, we usually imagine violence, drugs, alcohol, or sex being what is behind the abuse. In addition, it is not always obvious to the outside world, which is what creates the doubters, especially if the abuser is a functional person. The fact that the family is upper middle class doesn't hurt either. For Rachel, the abuse was psychological, and no less damaging - in fact, even more so, for a person must spend years trying to change their thinking after being in a situation like this. My assessment is that Rachel needed to write this book as a catharsis and a public announcement of her childhood so that she could continue on with her life.

Father still hiding behind his professional mask

I've just visited the website Rachel's father set up to attempt to vindicate himself, and left a comment. I'm guessing that he won't publish it, so I'm doing so here:

This website just proves the point Rachel makes over and over in her book--that the family she grew up in was a broken shell run by parents who were seriously damaged. So she's making the whole thing up, Steven? Sue her for libel then--let's see how far you get. Deny in front of a judge and after taking an oath that you never drugged your wife into a zombie-like state or systematically and cruelly abused your kids. Anybody can produce a set of videos showing a few good times. How about your other daughter--where are the glowing testimonials from her? Or your brother and his kids? If you truly loved your daughter and had some regret over the things you had put her through, there might be some room for sympathy. But your sarcastic tone and need to still be "right" at all costs is the only thing that comes through here. Give it up, Steve--give up the act and get some help.

The long shadows of the terror at home

When I saw the inner-flap of this book, I got a sense of dread, yet I also felt compelled to pick this up. Indeed, the topic of this book, namely how a control-obsessed father "ruled" this family of 4 (wife and 2 daughters) is the stuff that you simply can't make up.

In "House Rules" (272 pages) first-time author Rachel Sontag shares what it was like growing up the oldest daughter in a family where Dad for whatever reason had this impulse to control every aspect of life of his wife and 2 daughters, into the extreme, and Mom simply stood by and did very little or nothing about it. The author shares an anecdote in which Mom pretends to be going around the house to feed the dog but instead sneaks into Rachel's bedroom. "'Dad is recording your phone calls. You might want to watch what you say.' I closed my eyes for a moment, in the hopes that I was imagining her standing there in my bedroom. [...] I sat up in bed. 'DO YOU SEE IT'S SICK YOU HAVE TO TELL ME THIS?' I asked. Mom held her fingers to her lips, shut my bedroom door." Wow.... And that is just one of many, many instances that the author relays to us in this painful-to-read memoir.

The sad thing is that the author bears the psychological scars of this for the rest of her life, of course exemplified by the very fact that she feels compelled to write about it, all these years later. Indeed, in the "Acknowledgments", the author ends the book with this: "Love and thanks to my entire family. I know this subject is personal, I just didn't know how to live without sharing it". The long shadows of a very painful past...

`You can't live with genius anymore than you can pick up ice or fire.'

In 1527, Hans Holbein makes his first trip to London to paint a portrait of the family of Sir Thomas More. This novel is about the More family, specifically Meg Giggs one of Sir Thomas's foster children, and the two men attracted to her. One is Hans Holbein himself, the other is the mysterious John Clement. Told through the eyes of Meg Giggs, we learn of some of the intrigue in the court as Henry VIII seeks to marry Anne Boleyn and of the mystery surrounding John Clement who ultimately becomes Meg's husband.

I picked up this novel because I am fascinated by the life and times of Sir Thomas More (author of `Utopia' and Chancellor to Henry VIII, in 16th century England). Sir Thomas was a patron to many learned philosophers, astronomers, scholars and painters and his household was both lively and learned.

This is an accomplished first novel: it combines elements of history with fiction in a way that may have readers wondering where the boundaries are. Ms Bennett has included an authorial note and a bibliography which will be of value to those readers seeking more information about the people and events of this period.

I recommend this novel highly to those who enjoy well written historical fiction but especially those who enjoy fiction set in Tudor England.

What about Meg?!

Seems to me that most of these "reviews" are more like lengthy descriptions of the book! People tend to read reviews before they purchase so I will do my best to simply "review."
I am well-read on the Tudor period and just can't get enough historical fiction. While waiting for another Amazon shipment to come in, I picked up Portrait of an Unknown Woman.

Bennett did a great job of depicting the period, vividly describing moods, atmospheres etc. She did an excellent job with Clement and I felt as though I "knew" him. The dynamics of the father/daughter relationship were also decent. However, there were a few things that bothered me. Although Meg was the perfect person to pick as a narrator, Bennett really did not let us see inside her as much as we should have. I felt very unattached to her and even when things were hitting the fan with John, I found myself siding with him.

The turning points/climax were not built-up properly in any aspect. Espically the lust between Meg and Master Hans. The vision I had of him in my head was creepy and did not believe it one bit. Went from virtually nothing to him not being able to live without her????? Come on now...take us there! Build us up! Make us feel it!
There are MANY places where more elaboration was needed and MANY places where it just seemed to jump from emotion to emotion without any lingering. As a reader I was left thinking "UM, what is she feeling right now?" and "Why was this MAJOR event just glazed over?"
It did, however, paint a detailed picture of Clement and even More. And for that, it was worth the read.

An Excellent and Absorbing Novel

This is an excellent and absorbing historical novel, beautifully written and full of evocative period detail. Even better, the characters are sensitively and convincingly drawn, especially Sir Thomas More, that almost-legendary figure of English history, who comes across as a much more complicated and ambiguous individual than the two-dimensional hero usually presented to readers. Through the eyes of the central character Meg Giggs, one of More's wards, or foster children, we also see him as a religious fanatic, a man capable of personally inflicting torture on Protestant "heretics," and of ordering them burned at the stake.

The novel ends shortly before More is betrayed and then beheaded at the orders of King Henry VIII, for refusing to condone the king's divorce and remarriage to Ann Boleyn. Oddly, the author nowhere mentions this event, not even in an epilogue. Readers who pick up this book will probably know about More's fate, but those who do not will miss the underlying menace that pervades the story: the knowledge of More's eventual martyrdom.

The author's imaginative contributions are curious, especially making the character of John Clements into one of the famous "princes in the tower," imprisoned there by the usurper, King Richard III, and whose fates remain unknown. Her assertion that Meg Giggs was Thomas More's illegitimate daughter is also a bit jarring, although More was a man of strong physical appetites who could have fathered an out-of-wedlock child. The portrait of Hans Holbein is quite good and remains true to at least some of the painter's characteristics, although we know very little about his inner life. The author pointedly ignores the fact (and it is a fact) that Holbein had a mistress in London, with whom he fathered several children, but perhaps that occurred later, in the years after the novel's conclusion.

Gunter Endres is an aviation consultant and writer. He contributes regularly to Airline Business and Flight International magazines, and has written many books, including Jane's Airline Recognition Guide. He is a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and lives in Sussex. Michael J Gething has been an aviation/defence journalist and editor since 1973. He spent 17 years at DEFENCE, eight of then as Editor, before joining Jane's in December 1993. He was also the last editor of the Airfix Magazine in 1993. An Associate Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Journalists, Michael also belongs to Air-Britain, the Air League and the Air Power Association. He lives in Sussex.

Some errors

The plan drawings are detailed, and there is a nearly comprehensive featuring of aircraft. The color photos are a welcome addition. There are some errors though, most of which are remarkable for a 2005 publishing:

- The F-22 entry contains drawings of a YF-22.
- The Su-30 and -33 are portrayed as externally identical, when the -33 actually has fixed canards. The Flanker series is a real welter of designations though.
- The CAC J-10 is missing.
- The Eclipse 500 and Cessna 510 Mustang are missing. Those will likely be added after entering service.

These shortcomings lead me to believe that Jane's influenced the content minimally, and that it is mostly a Collins Reference work. All the World's Aircraft contains none of these mistakes. The F-22 entry particularly baffles me. The general arrangement revisions to the YF-22 are over a decade old, and the F-22 is a highly conspicuous aircraft today. A program of its importance demands accurate illustration.

Regardless, I'd suppose this book accurately portrays at least 95% of all current aircraft, in the limited manner of a "recognition guide." The new acronym glossary covers most popular acronyms and is decent for the beginner. There's also a section on military aircraft markings (US star and bars, numerous roundels, etc.), so that you can correct CNN when they mislabel Greek F-16s as Italian. My only regret is the stats are not detailed enough. Other than that, it is a thorough look at the airplanes of the world's current air forces. A must for any aeronautical fanatic.

This book is a no frills just the facts reference guide. It provides aircraft dimensions, weights, performance, and armament information. Photos and graphic representations assist in aircraft identification. Aircraft are logically grouped making searches for a particular airframe easy. Anyone working the flightline, and/or coordinating airshows will find this information invaluable when trying to establish parking plans.

As in his previous books (Holy Blood, Holy Grail; The Jesus Papers), Baigent tries to uncover the dark forceshiding in the shadows of religion and ferret out fundamentalists whose dogmatism often turns to violence. Focusing on the end times, he warns that powerful fundamentalist sects in Christianity, Judaism and Islam are working to bring about the battle of Armageddon, when the forces of darkness will be destroyed by the Messiah, who will then bring about a new reign. All three groups want Jerusalem, where each lays claim to a physical spot, the Dome of the Rock, as a sacred place in its history; all three want a state in which politics are subservient to religion. Baigent makes the same mistake that the fundamentalists make when reading the book of Revelation. It is not a book of prophecy and manual for frightening sinners back into the fold; it is apocalyptic literature that uses symbols as secret codes for the state of affairs in the lives of first- and second-century Christians, offering them hope for escaping from their plights. Exposes a truly deadly mind-set

Baigent has written neither a history book nor a religion book. Rather, he has sounded a warning cry about the manner in which extremists of three faiths have very specific plans to attempt the destruction of the world. Baigent's information is relatively easy to corroborate, but he has "connected the dots" in an attempt to warn everyone else that these people genuinely believe in their lunacy and genuinely intend to carry it out.

The three groups of extremists begin with the Jewish extremists who are determined to expand the state of Israel to its Biblical dimensions, which some (basing their thinking on the book of Joshua) regard as extending into modern-day Iraq. They are also determined to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, and as a first step they want to demolish the Dome of the Rock, which is merely the third holiest shrine in all of Islam. Baigent records how a rabbi present in 1967, when the Israelis reclaimed Jerusalem, insisted that Moshe Dayan take the opportunity to blow up the Dome of the Rock then and there, and how Dayan courageously refused. But the extremists are determined to destroy it. The only problem: They can't attack the Dome without risking a sinful intrusion on sacred ground, and they lack the means of cleansing themselves of this sin.

Enter the red heifer. A pure red heifer with no more than one black hair is required for the ritual to purify those who would assault the Dome. An evangelical Christian cattle rancher in the American South has been working with Jewish ultra-orthodox rabbis to breed such a red heifer. They have almost succeeded on two occasions. The Christian extremist is helping because Christian extremists believe that the Temple must be rebuilt in Jerusalem in order for the Apocalypse to come and Jesus to return. They expect that this will bring on a global catastrophe, a war that will surpass all past wars, but they don't care; they believe they will be magically raptured up to Heaven before the shooting starts, where they can sip tea with Jesus and watch us sinners getting slaughtered.

The key message of this book is not the details of the thinking of the lunatic fringe. Baigent wrote this book in an effort to shake everyone else out of their slumber. He is trying to warn everyone else that these people are determined to take actions that could easily lead to a global nuclear war. He warns us that they genuinely believe that they will somehow prosper in a global catastrophe, and are determined to bring it on. They are really, truly, as deluded and as dangerous as Charles Manson ever was with his Helter-Skelter plot, but with vastly greater resources in their hands.

Measured against his intent, Baigent has done a good job of making the true situation clear and compelling. He has sounded the warning and done it well.

Reaping the Whirlwind

The one thing these religious extremists have in common is the belief that they and they alone are the keepers of the "True Faith" and it is their God given duty to bring about their version of the end times (of course, the rest of us are generously given the option of converting or facing God's wrath by their blood soaked hands). All this brings me to a highly engaging and eye opening book by Michael Baigent entitled, "Racing Toward Armageddon: The Three Great Religions And The Plot To End The World" (you may remember Mr. Baigent as the co-author of the hugely popular "Holy Blood Holy Grail" and "The Messianic Legacy"). Mr. Baigent gives us an excellent historical overview the three main religions and their claim on Jerusalem. He then leads us through their Byzantine world to induce the coming of the Messiah, but which Messiah? Is it the Messiah Ben David or the Twelfth Iman? Or is it the Second Coming of Jesus? Finally, Mr. Baigent details the objectives of each and finally, what we can do.

Beware the Three Headed Monster

Some may find Michael Baigent's treatise, Racing Toward Armageddon a bit alarmist, however it may also be a warning that must be heeded. The religious zealots who believe in biblical fairytales seem to be gaining momentum around the world. Having previously read Matthew Alper's book, The God Part of the Brain, I couldn't help but wonder if these religious extremists simply aren't wired differently than some of us. But,that doesn't make them any less dangerous. And this is where Baigent's premise shines. He names the three Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as all marching merrily along toward Armageddon and doing all they can to hasten its arrival. It's up to us, who have not been brainwashed with religious myths to prevent any of these three from making Armageddon a reality.
