In this powerful biography, Bogle recovers the rich fullness of singer Ethel Waters's life (1896–1977). In vivid though often exhausting detail, Bogle traces Waters's rise from the poverty of her surroundings in Chester, Pa., through her early musical successes in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s to her film and Broadway career and her later religious conversion as her health declined. Waters started singing very early, and worked the clubs and chitlin' circuit with ribald and sexy songs; she soon made her name as both black and white audiences flocked to hear her sing songs such as "Am I Blue?," "Stormy Weather," and "Shake That Thing" in Harlem clubs. Bogle, author of several biographies of black entertainers, including the best-selling Dorothy Dandridge (1997), offers a penetrating look at a woman of massive talent and determination. Waters grew up mostly in Chester, Pennsylvania, adopting a wandering life that suited her desire to flee her difficult past, poverty, hard family life, and early, failed marriage. In the early 1920s, she was among the first black performers in Harlem whom white patrons came to see. She began recording in the 1920s and �30s and moved from blues to pop; among her hits were �Stormy Weather� and �Heat Wave.� Her talent for singing, dancing, and acting led her to cross paths with Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Count Basie, Josephine Baker, Elia Kazan, Darryl F. Zanuck, Sammy Davis Jr., Harry Belafonte, and others. Another brilliant book by Mr Bogle!

Donald Bogle, who should be crowned the King of African American Cinema/Theater Historians, has written another mammoth, exhaustive, fascinating but much too long tome. The subject this time is the legendary but forgotten singer and actress Ethel Waters. In the 1920s she was a GIANT among jazz singers, and helped to create the sound of popular jazz singing. She influenced almost everybody, inlcuding Ella, Billie and Lena, who described her as "the mother of us all." When Ethel expanded her repertoire in the 1930s to include popular songs, she influenced the young Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra (who sent her a telegram on her 80th birthday in 1976, that's how much Sinatra revered her). "Stormy Weather" was written fo Ethel (NOT Lena). In the 1940s Ethel became a Hollywood star. In the early 1950s she triumphed as a dramatic actress on Broadway. Then America - Black AND White - turned its back on her. Unemployed, unemployable and rejected, she turned to Jesus (and Billy Graham's Crusades) and preached the word of God till the day she died (in 1977). I'm an aetheist, but I'm thankful somebody in America, in this case Billy Graham's devotees, embraced her, loved her and gave her support when she most needed it.

Bogle's book is for the most part a well-researched, insightful and engaging biography. Mr Bogle clearly loves his subject but it is a pity it is padded out with unecessary 'background' information which sometimes wore this reader down. Also his lack of generosity to other writers on Ethel Waters has excluded any mention of her previous biographer, the London-based Stephen Bourne, whose modest, but informative biography, "Ethel Waters: Stormy Weather", was published by Scarecrow Press in 2007. Bourne's earlier version of Ethel's life and career, which offers a short but useful introduction to Miss Waters (and one that gives generous praise to Mr Bogle's ground-breaking work) should have been acknowledged Bogle's book.

Re: Crystal's comments. Mr Bourne DID contact a relative of Ethel's and with the help of an American genealogist was able to shed new light on Waters's innacurate claim that she was conceived when her mother was raped at knifepoint at the age of 12. What a pity Mr Bogle overlooked Bourne's book and the new information that he has helped to bring to light.

Slow Start, Comprehensive Overview

I often wish Amazon had a multi-tiered rating system. For research, I'd give Heat Wave a solid 5 stars, for readability I'd give it 3. Heat Wave runs about 500 pages but the first 100 or so the author takes too many side roads. If a reader is completely unfamiliar with the time period in which Ethel started her career, the background might be useful. For me, it seemed like a continual digression. I know (for example) who Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith are. Their interaction with Ethel Waters is what I want to know, their backgrounds I don't. It's difficult to set that aside, as many readers wouldn't approach a book about Ethel Waters without some grounding in the subject already. While Ethel deserves greater renown than she currently enjoys, she's not the entry point for most students of this time period. There's a lot of context being laid, and I want to get on to the story.

Once Bogle feels he's laid enough background he streamlines his prose a bit (although never fully) and delivers a comprehensive and nuanced portrait of Ethel's life. Ethel Waters is delivered to the reader with her personality intact. There is no whitewashing or looking away from her flaws, nor is there undue appreciation for her unquestionable talent. This is a clear eyed but very respectful assessment of Ethel as a person and a performer. Where possible, the author makes excellent use of Waters' own words, and those of her contemporaries. (To misquote Ossie Davis from the book; she was a great performer and a mean woman.) While not a casual read, it could be a definitive one. Donald Bogle clearly understands Ethel Waters as much as he appreciates her, his look at this too often forgotten star is worth the time.

Not totally true..

I am the great niece of Ethel Waters although I'm am very excited about his book and enjoy it, there are somethings I must
point out. I don't recall anyone in my family being interviewed . Secondly there is a reference to that fact that Ethel Waters was
born from a teenage mother who was raped, which i assume was taken from her auto-biography. My grandfather, who was Ethel's
older brother assured us that his mother was not a teenager when she was born and was not raped. This fact split the family apart.
This was written in her bio merely to sell books...Crystal Waters

About the Author

Dean Lorey is a Hollywood screenwriter whose credits include co-executive producer of the cult TV hit Arrested Development. He was inspired to write Nightmare Academy, his first series for young readers, by his personal enthusiasm for imagined worlds and video games. The first book in the trilogy, monster hunters, received the Southern California Booksellers' Award for Best Children's Novel of the Year. Dean Lorey lives in Calabasas, California, with his wife, Elizabeth, and their sons, Chris (first reader for the Nightmare Academy trilogy) and Alex (then too young to read).

For both kids AND Big Kids!

I got this for my 9 year old the other day. He started poking at it like it was cod liver oil. Like most 9 year old boys do when their father puts a BOOK in front of them. I told him it was probably like the Potter series - which he liked to WATCH... But I had him read the first ten pages before he could go to bed.

Imagine my surprise when I find him sitting at the kitchen table with TWO CHAPTERS left! He'd spent the entire night immersed in NA and kept 'shushing' me when I started asking him normal mundane questions about his plans for the day. (ok theres's some paternal schadenfreude at work here.)

But when he was done he was bubbling with excitement. Showing me the illustrations, trying to tell me the whole story. I told him I'd read it too and then we could talk about it. I started it right there and read it cover to cover. Now, Lorey's not writing in the style of Proust, he's got a very digestible and flowing style that keeps you chewing thru page after page. But this was a lot of fun. He created a whole fun uniqe world that I'd never visited.

Good going. For his freshman outing this was a joy and a pleasure.

The closet monster is REAL

As a child did you fear the boogeyman in the closet? Or the monster you were certain was under the bed? Guess what, they are real. And a few "gifted" children in the world can bring these creatures home. Every time they have a nightmare a portal opens and one or two of these beasties crosses over. For Charlie these nightmares have cost him friends and granted him low self-esteem and loneliness. Fearing for their child, Charlie's parents home schooled him to avoid the nastiness children give each other if someone is different.

Charlie will awaken one night to a horrible class 5 monster in his room and will meet 3 amazing people; Rex, the wrangler, Tabitha the portal opener, and Pinch the bossy. These 3 will convince Charlie's folks to allow him to attend Nightmare Academy. A strange school designed for training children with the "gift" to battle the monsters.

After a forced show of strength to the Director, Charlie is once again the outcast. Not only does he have this "gift", he's strong, and he's separated further by the knowledge he is a Banisher as well as a Nethromancer. This is rare, what more can Charlie discover to make him a bigger freak.

Friends for Charlie will be finally made, Violet and Theodore (I couldn't help but remember Harry Potter in their mannerisms) and they will help him rescue his parents after a monster abduction.

I read this book in 2 sittings; it's fast paced, easy to read, a page turner, and keeps the reader hooked, nothing boring here. I look forward to the next book. Young and old alike will enjoy this book.

Very Enjoyable

This book is for fiction and fantasy buffs of all ages and it was all but impossible to put down. You will easily get wrapped up in the frightening world presented by Lorey in this book. These days there is no shortage of books that involve fantasy, magic, and adventure; however Lorey's combination of those three genres works well. Nightmare Academy also brings a shockingly refreshing amount of originality to the idea of a school for "talented" children, resulting in a resounding triumph for any post-Harry Potter series. I found it very enjoyable.

usefull if you are looking for specific instructions

the book present of procedures using SPSS mixed models. it is very clear and has step-by-step instructions. However, the theoretical part is thin and there are no explanations regarding the statistical model that is in use. for example: if I have a level-2 unit with small number of cases, how does the program handle it? How is the reliability of measurement been measured? etc. These questions are not been answered by the book and therefore it fits to those of you who want to know what to do in order to receive results, but are not interested in the way the program does it.

When multi-level analysis makes it hard – Modeling with IBM SPSS

Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling with IBM SPSS by Heck, Thomas and Tabata. Already in the market for couple years, but still makes it easy for those who need results for hierarchical datasets. This book doesn't provide deep theory. Instead, it provides menu-driven and simple programing instructions to produce results. The book is written for everyone in the research community that faces first time the need to control for data structures. New IBM SPSS format has more than one way to model multilevel data and this book covers them all, at least at their basis, and then illustrates alternative result presentation possibilities. It also compares SPSS outputs with other statistical packages to show differences and how to manually calculate moments that SPSS does not produce. I find this book highly useful especially for researchers for whom I provide statistical consulting, when they struggle with understanding the problem of multilevel data-modeling and the way we control for multilevel effects. This book explains results without getting to deep into theory and emphasizes the correct interpretation of the estimates. The book covers the central topics of multilevel analysis such as: what is a multilevel structure of data; how to make first analytical assessment of the multilevel weight; practical instructions for preparing multilevel data for modeling; the two-level regression model and models of higher levels of data; looking across individual change overtime; cross-classification analysis. In each chapter the authors define the problem, the study questions, the restructuring of the data to fit the appropriate model, the modeling procedure and the interpretation of results. Best statistics book I've ever purchased!

I'm an entrepreneurship professor that does research on startups. While I'm a subject-matter expert on the startup process, I'm not a statistician. So while I can handle traditional statistical analysis, I delved into the scary world of multi-level longitudinal analysis with a great deal of trepidation and only out of absolute necessity. This book was a god-send, and is in my opinion, the model that all such books should follow. First, it's written in regular English, not indecipherable statistics-speak. It walks readers through many detailed examples, explaining why things are done, what choices should be made, and shows you how to do the analysis, step-by-step in SPSS. Each example is followed by a clear "Interpreting the Output" explanation. Having said that, this is a book on sophisticated statistical analysis, so a careful reading is necessary. Chapters 1 -4 demonstrate the development of multi-level models (with examples) for cross-sectional data. Chapters 5 and beyond does the same with repeated measures (longitudinal) data. My copy now has bookmarks, high-lights and/or written comments on nearly every page. Highly recommend.
