About the Author

Marvin Meyer is one of the foremost scholars on early Christianity and texts about Jesus outside the New Testament. He is Griset Professor of Bible and Christian Studies at Chapman University in Orange, California. Among his recent books are The Gospel of Judas, The Gnostic Gospels of Jesus, The Gospels of Mary, The Gospel of Thomas, and The Nag Hammadi Scriptures.

Some good source material

Meyer's book should really be called 1/4 a book. It is 184 pages long, but it is printed on 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 paper using a 1 1/2 line spacing. Which means it's probably about 120 pages long if printed as most books are printed. But, if you subtract the 35 pages of notes and the 26 page introduction, we are well under 100 pages. If you then subtract the dozens of pages that consist of translations of various texts (e.g., Gospel of Judas, Dialogue of the Savior) you probably have fewer than 50 pages of original text.

Much of that text is repetitious. Meyer tells us many times about the dates that the gospels were authored, about the verb paradidonai which means "handed over" and not "betrayed", about the fact that Paul never mentions Judas, etc. In a book that is already too short to really be called a book, such repetitions deprive us of even more information.

The bottom line is that $22.95 is a lot to pay for 1/4 book!

Putting all this aside, what value can we find in this 1/4 book? Meyer's excellent writing skills (excepting the repetition) are very much in evidence, as is his scholarship. But the book is really more of a platform to simply present texts about Judas. Meyer does very little to explain anything, merely to describe.

The various texts about Judas probably tell us more about the people who wrote the texts than they do about Judas. None of this important material is addressed by Meyer.

All things considered, there is very little to merit reading this 1/4 book. If you have no other source for some of the texts (e.g., Acts of John, The Concept of our Great Power, Arabic Infancy Gospel, etc.) then this may be a useful text. But otherwise your money (and time) is best spent elsewhere.

Marvin, do you see now what I said to you about 'Judas' as James?

I 'knew' Marvin Meyer by phone. I tried to tell him that Judas was the sacrifice in the original gnostic story from the Gospel of Judas, but he couldn't wrap his orthodox mind around it. The NT is a coverup. Plain and simply, the canon is a scam on the truth. The early Church elders wanted to start a new religion so they threw the one man who could have really saved them under the bus: James the Just. He became "Judas, the traitor."Now, Meyer's book. As far as it goes it is interesting for its wide-ranging sources. Just remember he was a Presbyterian, not a Gnostic. I practice mystic (gnostic) teaching, daily. This is not about betrayal. Even Marvin knew it. I so wish he could be around to see this become the revelation the Pachomian monks who buried it had in mind all along. It came a little later than expected but I guarantee to all, it won't be lost anymore! Rest my friend, you did a great job with this as far as your upbringing could allow.

NOT SO DEFINITIVE

This slender book does not live up to its subtitle of being "the definitive collection of Gospels and legends about the infamous apostle of Jesus." There are many such legends omitted; for example, Benedeit's "Voyage of St. Brendan." Perhaps the author meant to limit the book to only legends from ancient times. The main section consists of a translation of the recently discovered Gospel of Judas. What is really disappointing and distracting in this book is the use of endnotes. Mostly the endnotes direct the reader to "cf." some biblical passage. In order to do so, the reader must have the Bible with the passage referred to immediately available. Although it would have markedly increased the size of this book, it would have been much more convenient to the reader if the endnote supplied the passage referred to, rather than to require the reader to interrupt the flow of his reading to look up the endnote, then to look up the passage in a separate book. Moreover, the constant use of the "cf." appears to reflect a laziness on the part of the author. There is little or no discussion of the importance or significance of the comparison. If the comparison is of minor importance, then the reader would be better served if the author would omit the distraction of endnotes and simply state the general point that the stories have certain similarities. All in all, it appears this book is merely one more exploitation of the discovery of the Gospel of Judas, dressed up in pseudo-scholarship for the masses.

America ... is an informercial? (Plus shipping and handling)

I read Steve Salerno's superb review of "But Wait" in the WSJ on March 25, instantly downloaded the book to my Kindle2, and dug in (after setting the font size much larger for my older eyes).

The author had me laughing many times, but, more seriously, there are countless tip and tricks revealed about the infomercial business and selling in general that make this a highly worthwhile read.

I also love talking with friends about the book because everyone knows or remembers the gadgets, get rich quick seminars, and celebrities who hawk pimple treatments and swamp land in Arkansas.

About a third of my way into "But Wait," I began having a strange fantasy: maybe we're all living inside one giant, massive informercial. After all, I bought my kindle2 based on the infomercials at amazon's website!

Fascinating

I thought this book was great. Written in a very engaging style. The chapter on how the infomercials are created is worth the price of the book all by itself. Parts of it were a little depressing though, such as how easy it is to sucker people who don't have money and the long list of dishonest people who have "gotten away with it", in that, even if they had to pay some fines, it was nothing compared to what they earned. A photo section would have been nice. Also, I would have been interested to know if there were or are ANY infomercials advertising products that really are truly innovative or useful. The author would have you believe that the answer is no, but I wonder...

Interesting look at an interesting industry

About: Stern takes us a tour of the infomercial industry. The cast of characters includes legends like Tony Robbins, one of whose ads brought in $50,000 a minute, unsavory characters like Kevin Trudeau and his bogus "cures" and celebrities who seem to hawk most anything for a buck or to hold on to the last vestiges of fame. A glimpse behind the scenes gives us a look at the QVC "house" where they broadcast 24 hours a day. A few unsurprising "secrets" are revealed as well: The Magic Bullet has a $39.95 charge for shipping, the "other" knife is shown slicing an under ripe tomato while the infomercial knife cuts through an overripe one and don't be surprised if the product with a 30 day money back guarantee arrives on your doorstep on day 29.

Pros: Well-written, interesting look at the industry

Cons: While there is a references section in the back, there are no in-text citations.

Intoxicating from start to finish!

The year is 1899. While women and young ladies are supposed to be demure and proper in each and every thing they do; so is not the case for many of those living in New York City. Four young women, to be exact, who are committing different forms of wrongdoing, which would certainly turn heads and cause whispers in upper class society. Things that would leave them shunned. But, as long as no one finds out, I suppose it doesn't really matter. If those secrets are revealed, however, things may not be as...peachy keen as they are now.

Eighteen-year-old, Elizabeth Adora Holland, is the girl every gentleman wants to be with, and all the girls want to be. As far as society goes, Elizabeth is the ideal up-and-comer. She's demure, polite, pure, and breathtakingly beautiful. What society doesn't know about, however, are her late-night trysts with a certain member of her staff. Trysts that seem harmless and loving to Elizabeth and her...admirer; but would turn heads and cast her out of the inner circle in mere moments. When she is betrothed to the most sought-after bachelor in New York City, the world practically stops as wedding preparations begin. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's heart isn't in it, instead, her conscience and her true love take over, causing her to question her impending marriage. But with a horrible secret haunting her family, there is little she can do to save herself from a lifetime of misery, without taking matters into her own hands and doing something drastic.

Penelope Hayes may be viewed by society as an improper floozy-esque young lady; but what she lacks in manners, she certainly makes up for in ravishing clothes, gorgeous looks, an estate that turns heads, and a bank account that leave people drowning in a puddle of their own drool. On the outside, it appears that Penelope and Elizabeth are best friends; but for those on the inside, it's quite obvious that Penelope's loath and jealousy of Elizabeth dominate their relationship. Especially when Elizabeth steals the man of her dreams away from her. Now she plans on destroying her future, no matter what it takes. As they say..."keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

Lina Broud has always been an outsider looking in at the privileged world of high society. As Elizabeth's maid, she once shared a close friendship with her employer. But times have changed. Elizabeth is too busy to be friends with someone beneath her, and Lina is too proud to go on serving someone so ungrateful. Luckily, Lina has some juicy gossip about Elizabeth. Gossip that could finally permit her entry into the glamorous world of high society. The question is whether or not she's capable of betray her childhood friend for a little cold, hard cash. It's amazing what type of effect money can have on someone.

I am beyond shocked to learn that this is Anna Godbersen's debut novel. From page one, her lavish descriptions of old time New York City, and high society hooked me; while her gossip-loving, well-dressed characters reeled me in. The scandal and mystery wrapped inside this charmed world, of course, didn't hurt the story at all. Rather, it added another dimension to the tale, making it incapable for the reader to put it down. While Elizabeth is a good girl doing bad things; and Penelope is a bad girl doing bad things; and Lina is a spiteful servant you can't help but dislike; Diana comes off as the most diverse, multi-dimensional character - at least in my eyes. Diana is the epitome of a girl gone wrong. She doesn't take direction from her elders, she spends her days devouring books, and she has no problem with smoking, or kissing random men. Her free spirit is overwhelmingly delightful; and, mixed with the characters of Lina, Penelope, and Elizabeth, Godbersen has woven a tightly knit story that leaves the reader craving more. And with a cliffhanger that would leave anyone salivating, there's no doubt in my mind that people won't be racing to the store for the next installment. Intoxicating from start to finish!

If only the book were as good as the cover

I wanted to love THE LUXE. I really did. And I only liked it.

The book begins at the funeral of Elizabeth Holland, 1899 Manhattan's ideal young lady of the upper class. She presumably drowned in the Hudson; her body has never been recovered. This should make for a really interesting book, exploring her death and the possible causes and how everyone reacts, right? Unfortunately, this book is not about Elizabeth's death but the lives of five teenagers living in upper class Manhattan.

Elizabeth does not want to marry Henry Schoonmaker and he doesn't want to marry her, but neither have a choice. Elizabeth's family is faced with ruin if she doesn't marry; Henry, who is quite a scoundrel, is faced with being disinherited. But Penelope Hayes, daughter of a newly wealthy family, wants Henry for herself and will do anything to get him, and servant Lina Broud, who hates her mistress Elizabeth, might prove dangerous.

The characters are all stereotypical or boring. There's absolutely no thought behind the characters of Penelope, Lina, and Henry. They are exactly what you'd expect to find, and there's nothing about them that makes them stand out. Elizabeth is just dull, and the adults too have very little personality. Only Diana Holland, Elizabeth's rebellious and slightly immature younger sister, shows any potential for developing into a memorable literary character. I will read the second book, but mainly to find out what happens to Diana.

And then the writing...Godbersen tried to make her writing stand out by using vivid words, but honestly in the end her writing just seemed stilted. She seemed to do a lot more telling than showing, and sometimes she added details in places where they disrupted the story. Overall, the writing made what should have been an exciting book hard to get into.

This wasn't a bad book. I did enjoy it, but it's not as good as I was expecting.

What year is it? Oh really, 1899? Yeah, right.

I normally dislike writing negative reviews, but in this case I feel absolutely inspired to. I received this book as an Advanced Readers copy from the Harper Collins First Look program, I am I truly expected to be blown away by what promised to be an excellent historical portrayal of teens at the turn of the nineteenth century. Instead, I felt like the characters in the book had been plucked from some modern day series like the Gossip Girl books. I am sure there are plenty of naughty girls of the upper crust in any time period, but it seemed to me that all the girls were lacking in the basic decorum of the time.

That is not to say the book was on the whole terrible. The descriptions of the lavish way of life certainly inspired me, placing me within the glittering late Victorian world. My main qualm was the characters. To me, they just didn't seem to embody the spirit of the age. I am not a prude, to be sure, as I read things that have sexual depictions, but the casualness of the depicted sex left a bad taste in my mouth. I could not care much for any of the characters because they seemed so bratty and duplicitous with their so-called friends. There wasn't even a good loathing hate that can come from an excellent depiction of a villain, just a dislike for everyone.

Perhaps I should have thought twice about wanting to read a book that talked about the bad girls acting bad and the good girls also acting bad, but I suppose I just wanted the book to be something else. So while I have been a little scathing, there is certainly an audience for this book, if you like the kind of modern melodrama with plenty of sex and betrayal along with a dose of "friendship." And there are beautiful descriptions of the luxury of the times which are quite impressive and vivid. A mixed bag for me, but sure to be a catch for those who like this sort of thing.

The only complaint I have for this publication is that the concordance was made with such small type it is impossible for me to read without magnification. This is marketed as a large print edition after all.

Other information not readily apparent from the description. This does come with a usefull green ribbon bookmark. There are no "words of Christ in red." This is an Anglicized edition which mean British word usage and spelling like "odour" and "colour."

This is too wide horizontally! No book cover can fit it. It is an awkward size to sit and read but it is a larger print and that is what I was looking for. Take lessons from the protestant large print Bibles and make it durable and practical!

According to the description, it was a large print, easy-to-read Bible. It was not. I bought this for my mom who has low-vision. Neither she nor I could read it. I would only recommend if you have normal vision.

Very Accurate!

First I want to start off by saying that I am a woman (straight). I originally purchased this for myself (thanks to the Valentine's Day discount, lol) out of curiosity. Not all men are right when it comes to women, and not all women are right when it comes to men; this is due to a lack of education/false information (cosmo anyone?). I was very impressed by this book. It was written in a *guide* format and was very blunt. Bassil didn't beat around the bush about what the average woman wants and constantly reminded the reader how to keep her happy during all stages of your relationship with her. [Most] women don't want to be coddled 24/7 or showered with praise at all times of the day and night, but it is really nice to feel appreciated: little reminders that you're still physically and emotionally attracted to us. Bassil, IMO, does a very nice job on listing various ways to keep the spark alive after you've been together for a while as well as how to 'woo' a woman.

Whether you are a newbie in the game of love or a 'pro,' I think that every guy will benefit from this guide. Not everyone knows everything and not all women are the same, but we do share a lot of similarities. :)

Excellent coverage of fundamentals

This book provides a very balanced coverage on relationships, covering many different viewpoints/stages. Reviews hazards and ideal scenarios through plausible examples. Well written, provides excellent motivation and explanations to help the reader recognize the importance and value of the "common sense" principles in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I like to read books that deal with the understanding of women and yeah it does include the occasional cosmo. The book was well written and a easy read. It helps provide a foundation while also providing the information required to build and tailor the ideas to your personal situation. I would recommend this book to anyone.

About the Author

Jane Wightwick is a Cambridge graduate in Arabic studies. She was formerly EFL editor then Publisher at Macmillan Education, where she worked on two self-study series: Breakthrough Languages and Macmillan Masters.

Mahmoud Gaafar is a native speaker of Egyptian Arabic. In 1986 he moved to the UK and founded g-and-w advertising, specializing in press and print for the Arab world. Subsequently, JW set up a publishing division of g-and-w. They publish their own materials and offer publishing services in a range of languages.

One of the greatest courses for the Egyptian dialect by far

To start off, I have to say; this has to be one of the most articulate, well organized book on how to speak and understand Egyptian Arabic. I can not thank Jane Whitewick and Mohammed Gafaar enough for laying aside their typical Modern Standard Arabic books to write a book on an actual dialect of Arabic. Both Whitewick's and Gafaar's books on Modern Standard Arabic have already a good reputation for its articulate and well organized fashion, and they transferred this same kind of style to this book. Sadly, I think their two previous editions of this book were lacking both in dialogue, vocabulary, and grammar points. However, they have such a great passion for people who want to learn Arabic that they actually were informed of the negative feedback and came up with this new edition. This edition has an English-Arabic dictionary, extra material on the publishers website, and all the dialogues in Arabic transcript in the back of the book for those who already know the Arabic script who think they are more comfortable reading it in Arabic for clarity (all the dialogues are in romanized transliteration).

I can not stress how important this book is for learning Egyptian Arabic as the book is well written and somewhat thorough. In contrast, the Kallimni 'Arabi courses for Egyptian Arabic suffer an extremely major flaw; it presupposes that it's audience has a sufficient amount of knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic to read the instructions in it! This is a huge problem because as most learners of Arabic know; there is a limited amount of resources for learning pure colloquial Arabic. Egyptian is well documented, but there are other dialects that need a good tour de force course. Even if there is, they are either probably overpriced, horribly written, leak Modern Standard Arabic into the course, or presupposes prior knowledge in Literary Arabic. This books flies right past all this (except its price with the cds included of course) and presents Arabic as understandably as it can, presupposing no prior knowledge in Arabic. Buying this course with the supplement CDs is enormously beneficial as it can help you correctly understand pronunciation and emphasis.

In all honesty, if you want to learn Egyptian Arabic, whether you are branching off from Modern Standard Arabic or find MSA useless for you, this should be your very first resource. From looking through this book quickly however, I sense that this course alone will not really be the "complete course" it really promises to be. What I mean is that you will definitely need much more information to completely convey in Egyptian Arabic. Sadly, I contacted the publisher and found out that there will not be a release of a part 2 in this series which is greatly upsetting. However, if you want to build on your early fluency after this book, here are my suggestions. First, buy an English-Egyptian dictionary to expand your vocabulary. Second, you can also get Maurice Salib's, "Spoken Arabic of Cairo", which is an introductry course as well. Salib's book is also written in romanized script which can be helpful. Thirdly, if you can, try and find an intermidate Egyptian Arabic course or another book that is transliterated. The biggest benefit would be to learn MSA and have the help of a native speaker so you can use the Kallimni 'Arabi series which will definitely get you to a near fluent level. Last of all, watch and listen to Egyptian shows, songs, and movies as Cairo is essentially the Hollywood of the Middle East! Listening and watching will help you understand grammatical structure and recognize words with its correct pronunciation! Study and keep studying as it is key to learning any new language.

Almost every Arab in other Arab countries can understand Egyptian Arabic due to Egypt's mass influence on Arabic popular media with shows,songs, etc, making it the most understood dialect of Arabic. You will not be disappointed, this will be your major breakthrough in actually learning spoken Arabic both fast and articulately.

Egyptian Arabic from scratch. Good for absolute beginners or those who understand Modern Standard Arabic.

In the US, it seems like there is mindset of "standard Arabic first, then dialects", and the existing learning materials seem to strongly suggest that dialects are somehow some kind of "advanced" study. This book breaks away from that model and starts with "So you speak English, huh?" and goes from there.

Short version: Is it good? Yes. Is it great? Maybe. Could it be better? A bit. Should you buy it? Probably. Will you be able to talk about desires, activities, food, shopping, places, dates, and travel in the past, present, and future? Yes. Will you reach "B1" level after completing this book? Eh, if you practice a lot of what you learn you may fall somewhat below it.

The course begins with greetings and slowly increases your vocabulary while throwing in grammar and culture points. The book is broken into a sequence of "units". The lessons in the units are "dialogue based", meaning that you typically see a particular piece of dialog with some concept (say "adjectives" or "the past tense") repeated many times, then a translation and mini-glossary for that particular conversation. The Arabic conversation is presented as a transliteration using the Latin script, but with a few digits (e.g. 9 = ع) and digraphs (e.g. 'sh' for the IPA sound /ʃ/). Stress is marked with an accent mark over vowels. If you are more comfortable with the Arabic script (and honestly, I'm not sure who reads an entire "Learn Arabic" book written in English but is more comfortable with the Arabic script), then you can use the Arabic script version in the back of the book -- but it has no vowels. Typically, you listen to the conversation a few times, then move on the to the lesson and activities. So let me say that again just to be clear: Every conversation has: a) Conversation in transliterated Arabic, b) English translation, c) Glossary for that conversation, d) Conversation in Arabic script (no vowel markings).

After the dialogues, you typically see a breakdown of the grammar concepts you just witnessed, and they often refer back to specific textual examples in the conversation. This is good for reinforcing what you've just read, or comprehending it -- and often times, you'll not be able to understand what you are reading/listening to until after you've read either the translation or the glossary. There are other writing / listening exercises that come after to make sure you get it. Per "unit" you will see usually two or three dialogues, grammar explanations with examples, a couple of listening exercises, and some reading / writing exercises. This book will not really help you learn to speak well, but there is more than enough material to get yourself on a site like italki.com or conversationexchange.com and find a conversation partner to practice some phrases and words with.

At the end of each unit is some bit about learn the Arabic script, usually 2-3 letters at a time. I am already quite comfortable with the Arabic script, so I did not make use of those exercises. Honestly, there are probably better ways to learn the script, but this is probably sufficient.

Purists may hate the fact that it takes until nearly the end of the book to fully learn the Arabic script, but the target audience is different: the audience is people who have never studied Arabic before. The script is an eventual necessity, but for speaking / listening, it's less so.

So what's good? The grammar explanations and examples are very useful. Transliterated is great for learners and to capture some of the oddities of going from written (standard) Arabic to spoken dialects, especially the vowel elisions and shortenings.

What isn't so good? Majority of the dialogues are great and on point, but sometimes they can throw in some weird stuff. Take this example: "Is she still afraid of aeroplanes? Yes, but she got a sedative from the doctor." Sedatives? Some other fun words I found while reading: "savages", "water pipe", "to breed".

What is bad: Honestly, the narrator (and I hope that it is not the author, Jane Wightwick) has the most dull, slow, and monotone voice I have heard in a while. It just sucks the enthusiasm right out of the lesson -- they really need to have someone who sounds excited to be alive; it's just painful to listen to the introductions to the audio tracks. I'm always waiting for the Arabic to start and the terrible, grandmotherly English drawl to end. The Arabic itself is fine, although sometimes it can sound a bit artificial. I suppose that's OK for learning a language though.

This book is the first full length analysis of the various dimensions of the peace, order and good government clause. It argues that the origins of the POGG clause mark it out as an anachronistic feature of British constitutionalism when seen against a modern setting of human rights, liberty and democratisation. The book traces the history, politics and applications of the clause through the colonial period in Commonwealth territories to date. It provides critical evaluation of the POGG clause in a cross-continental enquiry, examining statutory, political and constitutional deployment in Australia, Canada, India, Nigeria, South Africa and the United Kingdom. The evaluation demonstrates that the POGG clause has relevance in a number of significant aspects of legal and socio-political ordering across the Commonwealth featuring prominently in the federalism question, emergency powers and the review of administrative powers. It maintains that while the clause is not entirely devoid of positive value, the POGG clause has been used not only to further the objects of colonialism, but also authoritarianism and apartheid.
