Review

"It is undoubtedly an accolade to be among the select few leading international academics chosen for inclusion in this World Library of Educationalists series. It suggests, rightly, that Mary E. James has made a world leading contribution in her chosen field of assessment and evaluation. … Readers who pick up this volume, whether they have lived through the turbulent years that James describes or who are relatively new to the fray, will recognise the message of this collection concerning what matters in educational research – quality, utility, accessibility and a fundamental desire to improve the business of learning. The collection is a fitting tribute to the contribution of a recent President of the British Educational Research Association. It is a tribute to what it and all educational research should stand for." - Patricia Broadfoot, Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol, UK, in The Curriculum Journal

Creating Connection: A Relational-Cultural Approach with Couples (Family Therapy and Counseling)From Jordan, Judith V. (EDT)/ Carlson, J

Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) posits that people grow through and toward relationship throughout the lifespan.  Rather than emphasizing movement toward autonomy and self-sufficiency, it focuses on the power of connection in people’s lives. Culture and power are seen as formative in individual and social development. As a model, RCT is ideal for work with couples: it encourages active participation in relationships, fosters the well-being of everyone involved, and provides guidelines for working with disconnections and building relational resilience. Creating Connection helps readers to understand the pain of disconnection and to use RCT to heal relationships in a variety of settings, including with heterosexual couples, stepparents, lesbian and gay couples, and mixed race couples. In addition to an emphasis on helping couples find authentic connection, RCT points to the need for changing the cultural conditions that contribute to the problems of disconnection. Polarities of “you vs. me” will be replaced with the healing concept of “us.”

Review

“Relational-Cultural Theory alerts us to the power of connection in people's lives and also the impediments to closeness. This book will be of great value to therapists working with couples whose relationships cross culturally monitored boundaries. In describing ways of moving through impasse, it illuminates the power of love to upset a patriarchal order.” - Carol Gilligan, Author of In a Different Voice and The Birth of Pleasure

“Creating Connection is perhaps the most meaningful, deep, and yet pragmatic compendium on couples’ experience and couples therapy to be published in the last fifty years. It brings renewed hope for our patients in painful and disconnected relationships, helping to achieve true understanding and regain genuine meaning–the power of connection–in their lives. If you read one book on couples treatment this year, Creating Connection must be that one.” - William S Pollack, Ph.D., ABPP, Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School; Author of  Real Boys and Real Boys' Voices

“Judith Jordan and Jon Carlson’s new book, Creating Connection, deepens the application of the profound Relational-Cultural Theory to couples. The essays in this impressive collection move the therapy paradigm further towards the cutting edge of a relational lens. Since the relational is foundational, and this perspective is the future of therapy, we recommend this book as an essential read for all therapists.” - Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. and Helen Lakelly Hunt, Ph.D., Co-Authors of Making Marriage Simple and Receiving Love

“Creating Connection is a landmark volume in the field of therapy for committed couples. Its skillful integration of feminist awareness of our multiple and intersecting identities and their effects on intimacy with an emphasis on connection and empathy in relationship offers a refreshing perspective on how to think about intimate relationships caught in struggle. It's accessible, not only for therapists who wish to think differently about how to work with couples, but also for couples themselves looking for a new paradigm for deepening and strengthening connection. This is a book I'll use in my practice, and also in my life.” - Laura S. Brown, Ph.D. ABPP, Director, Fremont Community Therapy Project, Seattle WA and Author of Your Turn for Care: Surviving the Aging and Death of the Adults Who Harmed You

“This exciting volume brings the vital perspective of Relational Cultural Therapy to a diverse range of couples, focusing on ways to intervene therapeutically to overcome disconnections and foster positive relationship.  The distinguished authors fill a major gap in knowledge: No previous volume has so specifically and clearly addressed the experiences of marginalized couples, examined how social inequality affects intimate couple interactions, and detailed ways to repair and rebalance destructive inequities and interactions. This book will serve as a touchstone for all future work with couples, and is relevant not only for therapists but also for people interested in how to support loving, positive relationships.” - Dana C. Jack, Author of Silencing the Self: Women and Depression, Behind the Mask: Destruction and Creativity in Women’s Aggression, and Silencing the Self Across Cultures: Depression and Gender in the Social World

“Relational Cultural Theory is a complete natural for couples work, and Jordan and Carlson have put together a gold mine of tips and mind-expanding reframings. Seventeen clinicians cover the theory, the tie-in with couples, the basic cultural tools, and spot-on, ready-to-use applications to class, race, gender, sexual orientation, sex, parenting, step-parenting, health and power differences and impacts–an essential compilation all couples therapists will treasure.” - Christina Robb, MA, Author of This Changes Everything and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist

Race After the InternetFrom Brand: Routledge

In Race After the Internet, Lisa Nakamura and Peter Chow-White bring together a collection of interdisciplinary, forward-looking essays exploring the complex role that digital media technologies play in shaping our ideas about race. Contributors interrogate changing ideas of race within the context of an increasingly digitally mediatized cultural and informational landscape. Using social scientific, rhetorical, textual, and ethnographic approaches, these essays show how new and old styles of race as code, interaction, and image are played out within digital networks of power and privilege.

Race After the Internet includes essays on the shifting terrain of racial identity and its connections to social media technologies like Facebook and MySpace, popular online games like World of Warcraft, YouTube and viral video, WiFi infrastructure, the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program, genetic ancestry testing, and DNA databases in health and law enforcement. Contributors also investigate the ways in which racial profiling and a culture of racialized surveillance arise from the confluence of digital data and rapid developments in biotechnology. This collection aims to broaden the definition of the "digital divide" in order to convey a more nuanced understanding of access, usage, meaning, participation, and production of digital media technology in light of racial inequality.

Review

'The hope that the internet will promote tolerance, liberated sensibility and social inclusion is attacked with flair, insight and extensive evidence in this fine book that will be of interest to academics and students around the world.' ─ James Curran, Professor of Communications, Goldsmiths, University of London

'This is a must-have collection. Bringing together distinguished authors and emergent voices, Race After the Internet breaks new material ground in a field hampered by immaterialist fantasies. We are fortunate that crucial questions of race and new media are being investigated by such skilled and adventurous writers.' ─ Toby Miller, Professor of Media & Cultural Studies, University of California Riverside

‘The volume adds more examples and analyses to existing scholarship about the meaning of race in the digital age by arguing that race is not a representation that media users consume, but is a type of code they perform. The authors examine the race-based digital divide, the establishment and reinforcement of digital segregation and "ghettos", digital codes, and biotechnology....an accessible book for upper-level academic audiences.’ ─ Y. Kiuchi, Michigan State University

On Time and Being, by Martin Heidegger

On Time and Being charts the so-called "turn" in Martin Heidegger's philosophy away from his earlier metaphysics in Being and Time to his later thoughts after "the end of philosophy." The title lecture, "Time and Being," shows how Heidegger reconceived both "Being" and "time," introducing the new concept of "the event of Appropriation" to help give his metaphysical ideas nonmetaphysical meanings. On Time and Being also contains a summary of six seminar sessions that Heidegger conducted on "Time and Being," a lecture called "The End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking," and an autobiographical sketch of Heidegger's intellectual history in "My Way of Phenomenology."

Review
"The title of the English translation is that of the lead essay, the highly celebrated lecture which Heidegger gave in 1962 and which bears the same title as the never published 'third division' of the 'first half' of Being and Time. This lecture is perhaps the most significant document to be added to the Heideggerian corpus since the Letter on Humanism....Stambaugh's translation is superb." - Stanley O. Hoerr and Staff, The Review of Metaphysics "This collection may well vie with Vom Wesen des Grundes and Identitat und Differenz as definitive statements of Heidegger's ontology." - Library Journal

From the Inside Flap
On Time and Being consists of not only the titular lecture, "Time and Being," but also a summary of six seminar sessions that Heidegger conducted on it, a lecture called "The End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking," and an autobiographical sketch of Heidegger's intellectual history in "My Way of Phenomenology." This volume charts the so-called "turn" in Heidegger's philosophy away from his earlier metaphysics in Being and Time and toward his later thoughts after "the end of philosophy." The title lecture in particular shows us how he reconceived both "Being" and "time," introducing the new concept of "the event of Appropriation" to help give his metaphysical ideas nonmetaphysical meanings.

A COLLECTION CONTAINING TWO LECTURES, AND OTHER MATERIAL
By Steven H Propp
Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) was an influential and controversial German philosopher, primarily concerned with Being, and phenomenology---who was widely (perhaps incorrectly) also perceived as an Existentialist. His relationship with the Nazi party in Germany has been the subject of widespread controversy and debate [e.g., Heidegger and Nazism, Heidegger and the Nazis, Heidegger's Crisis: Philosophy and Politics in Nazi Germany, Heidegger and the Question of National Socialism, etc.] He wrote many other books, such as Being and Time, Introduction to Metaphysics, Basic Writings, Nietzsche, Vol. 1: The Will to Power as Art, Vol. 2: The Eternal Recurrence of the Same, Nietzsche: Vol. 3: The Will to Power as Knowledge and as Metaphysics; Vol. 4: Nihilism, The Question Concerning Technology, etc.

The translator said in the Introduction, “‘On Time and Being’ contains Heidegger’s lecture on ‘Time and Being’ together with a summary of six seminar sessions on that lecture---a lecture on ‘The End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking,’ and a short retrospective piece on Heidegger’s relation to phenomenology.”

Heidegger says in the first lecture, “What prompts us to name time and Being together? From the dawn of Western-European thinking until today, Being means the same as presencing. Presencing, presence speaks of the present. According to current representations, the present, together with past and future, forms the character of time. Being is determined by presence as time… But is Being a thing? Is Being like an actual being in time? IS Being at all? If it were, then we would incontestably discover it as such among other beings. This lecture hall IS… We recognize the illuminated lecture hall at once and with no reservations as something that is. But where in the whole lecture hall do we find the ‘is’? … Every thing has its time. But Being is not a thing, is not in time … Being is not a thing, thus nothing temporal, and yet it is determined by time as presence. Time is not a thing, thus nothing which is, and yet it remains constant in its passing away without being something temporal like the beings in time.” (Pg. 2-3)

He goes on, “Anything of which we can say ‘it is’ is thereby represented as a being. But Being is not a being. Thus the ‘esti’ that is emphasized in Parmenides’ saying cannot represent the Being which it names as some kind of a being… we can paraphrase [esti] by: ‘It is capable.’ However, the meaning of this capability remained just as unthought, then and afterward, as the ‘It’ which is capable of Being. To be capable of Being means: to yield and give Being. In the ‘esti’ there is concealed the It gives.” (Pg. 8)

He says, “Insofar as there is manifest in Being as presence such a thing as time, the supposition mentioned earlier grows stronger that true time, the fourfold extending of the open, could be discovered as the ‘It’ that gives Being, i.e., gives presence. The supposition appears to be fully confirmed when we note that absence, too, manifests itself as a mode of presence. What has-been which, by refusing the present, lets that become present which is no longer present, and the coming toward us of what is to come which, by withholding the present, lets that be present which is not yet present---both made manifest the manner of an extending opening up which gives all presencing into the open. Thus true time appears as the ‘It’ of which we speak when we say: it gives Being. The destiny in which It gives Being lies in the extending of time.” (Pg. 17)

He suggests, “Insofar as the destiny of Being lies in the extending of time, and time, together with Being, lies in Appropriation, Appropriating makes manifest its peculiar property, that Appropriation withdraws what is most fully its own from boundless unconcealment. Thought in terms of Appropriating, this means: in the sense it expropriates itself of itself. Expropriation belongs to Appropriation as such. By this expropriation, Appropriation does not abandon itself---rather, it preserves what is its own.” (Pg. 22-23)

In the second lecture, he observes, “Philosophy is metaphysics. Metaphysics things being as a whole---the world, man, God---with respect to Being, with respect to the belonging together of beings in Being. Metaphysics thinks beings as being in the manner of representational thinking which gives reasons. For since the beginning of philosophy and with that beginning, the Being of beings has showed itself as the ground. The ground is from where beings as such are what they are in their becoming, perishing and persisting as something that can be known, handled, and worked upon. As the ground, Being brings beings to their actual presencing. The ground shows itself as presence.” (Pg. 55-56)

He states, “All philosophical thinking which explicitly or inexplicably follows the call ‘to the thing itself’ is already admitted to the free space of the opening in its movement and with its method. But philosophy knows nothing of the opening. Philosophy does speak about the light of reason, but does not heed the opening of Being. The … light of reason, throws light only on openness. It does concern the opening, but so little does it form it that it needs it in order to be able to illuminate what is present in the opening. This is true not only of the philosopher’s METHOD, but also and primarily of its MATTER, that is, of the presence of what is present.” (Pg. 66)

This small book will be of keen interest to those studying Heidegger and the development of his thought.

A promise rather than a product
By Rex Styzens
After I finished this volume, I was so enthusiastic that I ordered Joan Stambaugh's The Finitude of Being (SUNY Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy), as fine a commentary on MH's lifework as I know. I am taking a bit of a break from that study and so ended up here.

I am not a philosopher, although I have an MA in it. At this point my current estimate is that, if one wishes to understand MH's career achievements, then On Time and Being and The Finitude of Being, especially together, are the most helpful for non-academics. (Warning: they are not easy. They are intense. They depend on a prior half-century of exacting study and writing by MH. They can turn your head around as they have mine. They represent another way of thinking about the meaning of human life, although Stambaugh finds parallels in certain forms of Buddhism.)

The previous 5-star review here is a helpful introduction to some of the issues that MH wrestled with during his very long and productive career as a scholar. The character of this particular book has been described as providing what was promised by MH's admission that Being and Time was unfinished. That is, he originally saw the need to repeat his analysis from the point of view of time rather than from Being. Only some 35 years later, did he finally get to it.

So if you want to know where MH comes out near the end of his lifetime study, this volume provides a good perspective. As does Stambaugh's book referred to above. These works have had a growing influence whose endurance cannot be underestimated. If you want to know what our great great grandchildren interested in philosophy will be talking about, read these books.

The Event
By Steiner
An extremely demanding late lecture from Martin Heidegger, which was greeted with enormous enthusiasm. This is a radical transformation of Heidegger's project of ontology, in which the question of Being has been freed from the (perceived) subjective/interiority of Dasein. This is the Heidegger of the event (Ereignis) of propriation, which concerns a more primordial happening of Being. This lecture among Heidegger's most difficult and mysterious texts, and it cannot be comprehended without thorough study of the early Heidegger. Also included is the End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking.

Not What I Expected
By C. McClaine
I thought this would be a story line similar to "If you give a mouse a cookie" but, it wasn't that at all. There is no story at all. It's just each page counting from 1-10 with that number of objects on each page. This is my favorite author of all times but this book REALLY fell short!

Not what I was expecting
By T. Gorman
If you love the "If you give a mouse a cookie" books - this is not it! It is pretty much a very simple counting book. Not what I was hoping to show my 4 and 5 year olds. It is not very long and the pages are very sturdy, so it would be great for a toddler. My boys were not that impressed with it and neither was I.

Very disappointing
By Jacie Fields
We love the "If you give" books and thought this would be a great addition to our library. I was very disappointed when it arrived and I went to read it to my kids. There isn't a story. It's just very few words per page and a very basic counting book. Would not recommend it in the future.

Chapter One

Marx The Prophet

It was not by a slip that an analogy from the world of religion was I permitted to intrude into the title of this chapter. There is more than analogy. In one important sense, Marxism is a religion. To the believer it presents, first, a system of ultimate ends that embody the meaning of life and are absolute standards by which to judge events and actions; and, secondly, a guide to those ends which implies a plan of salvation and the indication of the evil from which mankind, or a chosen section of mankind, is to be saved. We may specify still further: Marxist socialism also belongs to that subgroup which promises paradise on this side of the grave. I believe that a formulation of these characteristics by an hierologist would give opportunities for classification and comment which might possibly lead much deeper into the sociological essence of Marxism than anything a mere economist can say.

The least important point about this is that it explains the success of Marxism. Purely scientific achievement, had it even been much more perfect than it was in the case of Marx, would never have won the immortality in the historical sense which is his. Nor would his arsenal of party slogans have done it. Part of his success, although a very minor part, is indeed attributable to the barrelful of white-hot phrases, of impassioned accusations and wrathful gesticulations, ready for use on any platform, that he put at the disposal of his flock. All that needs to be said about this aspect of the matter is that this ammunition has served and is serving its purpose very well, but that the production of it carried a disadvantage: in order to forge such weapons for the arena of social strife Marx had occasionally to bend, or to deviate from, the opinions that would logically follow from his system. However, if Marx had not been more than a purveyor of phraseology, he would be dead by now. Mankind is not grateful for that sort of service and forgets quickly the names of the people who write the librettos for its political operas.

But he was a prophet, and in order to understand the nature of this achievement we must visualize it in the setting of his own time. It was the zenith of bourgeois realization and the nadir of bourgeois civilization, the time of mechanistic materialism, of a cultural milieu which had as yet betrayed no sign that a new art and a new mode of life were in its womb, and which rioted in most repulsive banality. Faith in any real sense was rapidly falling away from all classes of society, and with it the only ray of light (apart from what may have been derived from Rochdale attitudes and saving banks) died from the workman's world, while intellectuals professed themselves highly satisfied with Mill's Logic and the Poor Law.

Now, to millions of human hearts the Marxian message of the terrestrial paradise of socialism meant a new ray of light and a new meaning of life. Call Marxist religion a counterfeit if you like, or a caricature of faith--there is plenty to be said for this view--but do not overlook or fail to admire the greatness of the achievement. Never mind that nearly all of those millions were unable to understand and appreciate the message in its true significance. That is the fate of all messages. The important thing is that the message was framed and conveyed in such a way as to be acceptable to the positivistic mind of its time--which was essentially bourgeois no doubt, but there is no paradox in saying that Marxism is essentially a product of the bourgeois mind. This was done, on the one hand, by formulating with unsurpassed force that feeling of being thwarted and ill treated which is the auto-therapeutic attitude of the unsuccessful many, and, on the other hand, by proclaiming that socialistic deliverance from those ills was a certainty amenable to rational proof.

Observe how supreme art here succeeds in weaving together those extra-rational cravings which receding religion had left running about like masterless dogs, and the rationalistic and materialistic tendencies of the time ineluctable for the moment, which would not tolerate any creed that had no scientific or pseudo-scientific connotation. Preaching the goal would have been ineffectual; analyzing a social process would have interested only a few hundred specialists. But preaching in the garb of analysis and analyzing with a view to heartfelt needs, this is what conquered passionate allegiance and gave to the Marxist that supreme boon which consists in the conviction that what one is and stands for can never be defeated but must conquer victoriously in the end. This, of course, does not exhaust the achievement. Personal force and the flash of prophecy work independently of the contents of the creed. No new life and no new meaning of life can be effectively revealed without. But this does not concern us here.

Something will have to be said about the cogency and correctness of Marx's attempt to prove the inevitability of the socialist goal. One remark, however, suffices as to what has been called above his formulation of the feelings of the unsuccessful many. It was, of course, not a true formulation of actual feelings, conscious or subconscious. Rather we could call it an attempt at replacing actual feelings by a true or false revelation of the logic of social evolution. By doing this and by at tributing--quite unrealistically--to the masses his own shibboleth of "class consciousness," he undoubtedly falsified the true psychology of the workman (which centers in the wish to become a small bourgeois and to be helped to that status by political force), but in so far as his teaching took effect he also expanded and ennobled it. He did not weep any sentimental tears about the beauty of the socialist idea.

Wrong conclusion, but all the same ...
By B. Alcat
In this book, first published in 1942, Joseph A. Schumpeter reached the conclusion that capitalism wouldn't be able to survive, due to diverse characteristics that were intrinsic to it. For example, he thought that monopolistic practices would only increase with time, thus damaging the capitalist process and not allowing it to function smoothly.

Obviously, by now we have realized that his conclusion was inexact, but that doesn't mean that we should overlook *Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy*. Schumpeter's analysis of capitalism and socialism, his concept of *creative destruction* and his economic definition of democracy are only some of the things included in this book that should be taken into account. Perhaps reality didn't end up matching the premises the author adhered to, but all the same we are likely to learn a lot from the valid points he makes along the way.

Schumpeter's draws the arguments to support his ideas from different fields: Economy, Sociology, History, and even (sometimes) Psychology. Because of that his premises don't tend to be unidimensional, but rather take into account the different facets of reality. As a result, this book is much more interesting to read, even though it might seem somehow difficult at first to many readers.

The interesting ideas in *Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy* are many, and I can't tell you about all of them without making this review impossibly long. Despite that, I can tell you at least something regarding the notions that I consider more interesting, for example the well-explained notion that *creative destruction* is the essence of capitalism. Also, I think that it is worthwhile to highlight Schumpeter's economic definition of the democratic method, as an *institutional arrangement for arriving at political decisions in which individuals acquire the power to decide by means of a competitive struggle for the people's vote*.

On the whole, I think you will enormously appreciate this landmark book, if you enjoy a good and careful analysis and aren't easily scared by books that at first glance seem too difficult. Provided you persist, you will realize that this book is as easy to tackle as many others... The only difference is that after reading *Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy* you will know a lot more, something that not so many other books can offer :)

1940s economist has a new day in the sun in 2001
By Max More
This classic book by economist Joseph Schumpeter originally came out in three editions in 1942, 1945, and 1950. The current 1984 edition begins with a helpful introduction by Tom Bottomore. The entire book is well worth reading if you have the time for some substantial thinking about economics, politics, and history on a grand scale. However, Schumpeter's half-century old tome has recently come back into vogue as everyone is picking up his term "creative destruction". Schumpeter, coming from the Austrian school of economics, focused on processes rather than states, making his thinking different from that of other economists of his time and for decades after. His notion of creative destruction perfectly fits as a description of what is happening in the new economy, as new technologies and business models and architectures are simultaneously destroying old sources of value while creating new opportunities for profit.

An excellent collection of documents and essays
By metalheadtakesthesquare
This particular text was not only an excellent reference source with a wide variety of topical information but also was a joy to read. Many of the essays had a certain degree of flair and fresh perspective that made them more than plain history, commentary, or reflection. The documents at each sections end offered a good grounding in factual history for better context of the section theme. Having used this as the main text in one of my graduate courses, I can safely say that the layout and content served as a strong backbone for study in the field of urbanism and sparked a new passion in many of my fellow students. While I would have liked to have seen a little more in terms Chicago focus, I understand that the model for the metropolis is New York whether Chicagoans like it or not. I know that for years to come, I will utilize this book for reference and simple enjoyment. A full endorsement of this work from me. Well done Corey and Boehm.

Mistress of the Vatican: The True Story of Olimpia Maidalchini: The Secret Female Pope, by Eleanor Herman

Eleanor Herman, the talented author of the New York Times bestselling Sex with Kings and Sex with the Queen goes behind the sacred doors of the Catholic Church in Mistress of the Vatican, a scintillating biography of a powerful yet little-known woman whose remarkable story is ripe with secrets, sex, passion, and ambition. For almost four centuries this astonishing story of a woman’s absolute power over the Vatican has been successfully buried—until now.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this engrossing "forgotten story" of the Vatican, Herman (Sex with the Queen) relays not only the life of 17th Cenutry Papal puppet-master Olimpia Maidalchini, but the political and social history of her age, including glimpses of art and architecture, family relations, medical care, religious traditions and daily life. Born into a family of average means, Maidalchini rebelled successfully against her father's plans to place her in a convent. This early triumph gave her a will that she'd eventually use to grab the ultimate seat of power in 17th century Italy, the Papacy, through the likely accomplice of her indecisive brother-in-law, a lawyer with holy orders who was dazzled by Maidalchini's intelligence, planning and accounting capabilities. He submitted to the her plans, and she eventually ushered him into power as Pope Innocent X. As her wealth and strength grow, so does the resentment around her, but her fate would be sealed by the bubonic plague. Exhaustively researched, with historical vignettes interwoven seamlessly, Herman's latest provides a window into an age of empire, nepotism and intrigue that rivals any novel for fascinating reading.

A Woman at the Pinnacle of Power
By Timothy Haugh
In her biography of Olimpia Maidalchini, Ms. Herman refers to her as "the secret female pope." This is a line meant to provoke and it does its job. Frankly, however, it is a bit of a stretch considering Ms. Herman's own descriptions of Olimpia's exile and near-catastrophic over-reaching. And let's not forget the fact that Olimpia's power was no secret. Still, given the Catholic Church's history of patriarchy and often sinful misogyny, it is wonderful to have reminders of the fact that, throughout its history, women have played important roles and wielded great power in the Church.

In some ways, Olimpia's story is a great one for any age: a young woman defies the odds and works her way up to the pinnacles of power and wealth in her society. The fact that she does so in the Papal States of the seventeenth century when women were often less than second-class citizens is all the more impressive. Of course, Olimpia is no saint--but few were in Rome at the time--and her path to power is paved with the bodies of those who stood in her way, but it is a fascinating story nonetheless.

Nearly forced into a convent by her father, she ends up marrying above her station in her native Viterbo. Soon after, she marries Pamphilio Pamphili, a nobleman of Rome and begins her quest for power there. She ultimately achieves this through her brother-in-law, Gianbattista Pamphili. Likely his mistress, she guides the shy canon into the intrigues of Vatican politics, to a cardinal's hat, and, ultimately, to elevation as Pope Innocent X. Through her vacillating lover, she controls everything from the purse-strings to cardinal appointments. At times, she truly did wield the power of the papacy and people knew it; at least, when she wasn't in disfavor with the pope. Like anyone, she wasn't perfect holding the reins of power and ran into some problems.

Most of her problems came from her own mistakes and Ms. Herman is fair in describing Olimpia's weaknesses. Her greed and vengefulness are on display, though Ms. Herman sometimes seems tolerant of these short-comings. True, these were common failing in Rome at the time and, in some cases, would have been winked at in men. But that doesn't make them right. But it is fair to say that Olimpia generally knew how to play the game well and she couldn't have achieved what she did without being ruthless.

All in all, this is a very well-written book about an amazing woman. Ms. Herman takes us right into the world of Rome in the seventeenth century. My brief description here does not do justice to the intricacy with which Ms. Herman brings things to life. And, in giving us Olimpia's story, she does more: she shows us how the Church of the time actually functioned. Great things were achieved, but these things were often achieved through less than holy methods. Olimpia turns out to be a reflection of her time. She did great and not-so-great things but she stands out because of her gender. Fortunately for us, since it allowed Ms. Herman to write this great book.

Great Scholarly Research
By M.O.
I have to disagree with A. Jones' review. He/she claims that Eleanor Herman's work is short on scholarly research. This is preposterous. As someone who has worked in primary source researching - manuscripts at the Library of Congress in Washington - I have to say that the work is absolutely painstaking, and those who are able to do it, and do it successfully, are the true scholars amongst us - they are not simply regurgitating some secondary sources. It is a huge mistake to discard this book as non-scholarly when the exact opposite is true. You can work for days on end combing through Senators' and Presidents' letters in the manuscript division at the Library of Congress and only come up with one or two sentences actually useful for your thesis. The letters are written on horribly deteriorated paper (or paper similar to that of tissue used to keep outgoing letters) in a cursive that is hard to decipher in ink that has run over the years. And I'm only talking about 19th century manuscripts written in American English. Herman did her research in manuscripts from 16th century Italy in medieval Italian (and being someone who speaks Italian, I also assume it was 16th century Romanesco Italian, the Roman dialect of the time) - and she collects a vast fount of these sources. Her research is a wonder. The story that she has been able to uncover from this research is simply astonishing. Yes, Herman does use terminology like "We can imagine/picture..." but it is clear from her writing that she is only extrapolating from the research that she has done and the knowledge of social customs of the time. Herman not only uncovers the gossip and rumors of the day, which is a marvel in itself, but in doing so she paints a picture of 16th century Rome and how life was lived - she is able to tell us not only what the famous Roman statue in the Piazza Navona, Pasquino, had to say about the infamous Olimpia Maidalchini, but she is able to tell us about how Olimpia was able to rid the Piazza of the farmers and peasants who created foul odors in the Piazza, which disturbed Olimpia. How she was able to pilfer the Vatican coffers. How Anna Colonna, a famous member of the Roman Colonna family felt about Olimpia's rise to prominence. How Olimpia's granddaughter refused to consummate her marriage, and how it was well known throughout the city, bringing disgrace upon the Pamphilj family. How it was reported and well known throughout the city that a cardinal, passing through the city streets, called Olimpia a whore.

All of this research paints a fantastic picture of the age, presenting us cutting edge historical research. The fact that Herman asks us to imagine Olimpia doing certain things, which she infers from the voluminous research she went through should not discredit that. Primary source research requires inferences and imagination - as does history in general. If we are unable to imagine, to picture things in the past happening, then we might as well not study history at all. It's the only way we can bring it back to life. And that's exactly what Herman does through, what I must repeat, is some of the best research I have ever seen in a book of its kind. If you are interested in medieval Italy, it is a MUST read. As someone who lived in Italy, studied Italy, and speaks Italian, trust me. It's excellent.

3 stars for entertainment value, 0 stars for actual scholarly research
By A. Jones
While entertaining and at times salacious, if you're looking for an in-depth, scholarly biography along the lines of Antonia Fraser, keep looking elsewhere.

All in all, I enjoyed reading about a now-forgotten woman who turned Rome and the Catholic Church on its ear with her ambition and greed. The author points out how this woman essentially ran the Vatican for extended periods of time for her brother-in-law, Pope Innocent X. Having schemed to place him on the papal throne, she continued to scheme and intrigue with cardinals, ambassadors, and royalty. All of this was acceptable at the time (bribery and coercion were the norm), but only if you were a man.

That said, this work is far from intellectual and relies too heavily on phrases such as "we can imagine" and "we can picture". This type of speculation runs rampant through the book, as do lengthy fiction-like tangents where the author asks us to imagine scenes in the Vatican and palaces of Rome.

I enjoyed the read, but took much of it with a grain of salt. If you like your biography heavy on opinion and guesswork, this is one for you. If like me, however, you prefer your biography to be well-researched, factual, and lacking in ridiculous exposition about the subject's motivations and the imaginings of the author, then it would be best to look elsewhere.
