From School Library Journal
Grade 3–7—In this prequel (HarperCollins, 2008) to Swordbird (HarperCollins, 2007), Nancy Yi Fan reveals the origin of the legendary bird that serves as savior to the world of birds. Although the moral values imbedded in the story are sometimes handled in a heavy-handed and didactic style, Yi Fan manages to weave a fascinating story about four birds on a quest to locate a magical sword. On their journey, they gain insight into their own strengths and frailties. While the novel is fascinating, the audio version is a disappointment. Janellen Steininger, the narrator, does not have the vocal range to adequately portray the multitude of characters in the story. Except for Maldeor, the evil one-winged archaeopteryx, all the voices sound essentially the same. As a result, the text sounds stilted and juvenile. There is the additional problem of the lack of background music for the songs of the birds. For libraries where the first book is popular, purchase the print version only.—Connie M. Review
In this good-versus-evil story, a prequel to Swordbird (HarperCollins, 2007), readers see a legend taking shape as evil forces attempt to conquer the inhabitants of a bird world. Prophecy says a hero will emerge on Hero's Day, but no one knows who it will be. Scattered in unknown regions of the world lay strategically placed Leasorn gems that hold clues to where the hero's sword waits. It is up to the hero to discover where and to retrieve it. The archaeopteryxes, an army of birds intent on cruelty and destruction, support the desires of the villainous leaders. Maldeor, a leader with a batlike wing forged from evil magic, has cast his eye toward claiming the sword. But unlikely birds lay down their lives to uncover the clues so they might save the sword for its true master. Fleydur, eagle prince of the Skythunder tribe, Stormac the mynah, and Ewingerale the woodpecker all play pivotal roles as companions to 013-Unidentified, a dovelike bird trapped as a slave. Readers will find the characters credible and well suited for their roles in this fabled adventure. The tightly crafted story line is nicely executed, but the most important element, and one that truly touches the heart, is the underlying theme of love.

Review
Birds form the unusual topic of this quest novel, which begins with a prophecy that foretells the coming of a great hero. The archaeopteryxes' dark empire is growing, and they have turned even the strongest species of birds, such as the crows, into slaves. 013-Unidentified, a strange white bird, is held in their captivity at the start of the book. As he struggles to free a fellow prisoner, he suddenly recalls the name his mother gave him, Wind-Voice. He escapes and grows strong again, reclaiming his true identity as Wind-Voice. Throughout the novel, he journeys across the land to stop the evil Maldeor from reaching the Hero's Sword. This is a novel about recognizing the hero within and understanding what is truly important in life--such as family, friends, and peace, rather than power or treasure. Yi Fan's writing is outstanding given her young age. I also loved Rioux's exceptional pencil-drawn illustrations, which bring charming life to the characters. Together, they make this book an entertaining flight of the imagination.

Chinese elements in Sword Quest
By Tjien N. Zeng
I must admit that I was skeptical of how a story about birds at war with each other could have much essence of Chinese culture. However, my skepticism quickly died. Nancy Yi Fan's Sword Quest contains several Chinese elements. The key and more obvious elements that I was able to find are the importance of family, nonviolence, Yin and Yang and the belief in good and bad spirits.

A major Chinese element in Sword Quest is the importance of family, as shown by the eagles. Though I do not know all that I wish to know about my parents' culture, the importance of family is permanently drilled into my head. One of the quotes from the Old Scripture describes this importance well; "One of the hardest things to break is the tie of family". However, Fan takes this key belief and goes a step forward by challenging it. One of the main characters, a former prince of the eagles, Fleydur, had to choose between what he know to be the right thing to do and the people he loved more than himself. In the end, he chose to do the right thing and did not regret it. However, the pain of separation from his family after so long is evident. Fan also takes it a step further when Wind-voice proclaims his companions his brothers, as if they were a true blood-related family.

The most obvious Chinese element is Yin and Yang. Its most obvious appearance is when the robin uses a tapestry that depicts the symbol of Yin and Yang to tell the future. Fan's description of the piece sounds poetic, like right from a translation of a Chinese poem; "tadpoles swimming together, encircled by orderly lines". Fan imbeds some Asian décor into the novel. The Yin and Yang tapestry is one example but another is the kite-shaped flying carriage with a frame of bamboo that Maldeor rides in.

Yin and Yang's other apparent appearance is in the form of the most evil and greedy villain, Yin Soul. In Chinese culture, Yin is thought of as the dark side representing all of the evil. I am surprised that the author did not go the whole way and make Yin Soul male, seeing as Yin is usually paired with any feminine. Its less obvious appearance in the story is when the main character, Wind-voice, realized that birds are not easily separated into "white and black, good and bad". Life and people have a lot of gray in them. This belief is depicted in Yin and Yang by the small circle of the opposite color in the fluid shapes of white and black.

Yin Soul is also linked to anther aspect of Chinese culture; spirits. The evil monster is turned into a spirit that must find a physical body to inhabit if he wants to live. Hence, he attempts to convince other birds to take his essence. The idea of essence and one's spirit seems a bit of place in the American culture but it is not so in the Chinese culture. However, not all spirits are evil. An obvious example is Wind-voice, who turns into a spirit to become an everlasting protector of peace, and his possible father, the Great Spirit. In China, ancestors are believed to be good spirits that protect families. Due to spirits not being a major role in American culture, Americans might confuse Fan's Great Spirit to mean the Christian God.

I do not know if it was the author's intentions but the name of her main character, Wind-voice, sounds like an English translation of a traditional Chinese name. However, I am certain that Fan named Wind-voice as 013-Unidentified because he is the hero that everybird, good and bad, has been looking for and because 13 is considered a lucky number in China. This is less obvious and may be confusing to Westerners who believe that 13 is one of the unluckiest numbers possible.

I remember silently agreeing with one of the characters when they questioned how a weapon, specifically a sword, could bring about peace. It seems that martial arts use weapons but only as a tool for nonviolence and peace. I noticed that when Wind-voice goes against Maldeor, Wind-voice does not actually physically fight Maldeor. Even when he had the hero's sword, Wind-voice uses it to protect himself but he does not harm his opponent.

My mind and heart were both touched by the words of Wind-voice; that true peace is not possible through force. Thought it does not directly deal with Chinese culture specifically, it applies universally. However, we humans easily forget it. The most obvious event that shows this is the Iraq war. Though the details of the mater are extremely complex and there are many gray areas, it is impossible for America to believe she can create peace in the Middle East through force. It seems so simple in this children's book in which it is the lives birds that are destroyed by war. Yet adults have not grasped this seemingly simple concept when they are in the real world impacting other human beings.

I must commend on the author, Nancy Yi Fan, for the brilliance of her writing and the universal teachings within. To me, Sword Quest is emboldened with hidden elements of Chinese culture but those are not themselves the key messages. They are tools used to inform readers of greater and broader messages.

definitely worth it
By Pam827
OK first I want to be more specific about book 1 than I was in my review for it. A lot of people thoinkk that it is nothing but a redwall rip off. I want to prove them wrong. I will list some differences here. First is the protaganists. In redwall the main character wants adventure in a time of peace. In swordbird the hero wants peace in a war.next the antagonist. Cluny is by far a better villain but Turnatt has a more developed back story. the bits of wisdom or evil between chapters in swordbird rock. finally the supernatural aspect. martin is a guardian spirit. swordbird is basicly bird Jesus! Also it's not bad to borrow ideas from other authors. sword quest is even better. The characters the awesome names(yin soul means shadow soul!how cool is that!),The story everything about this is good.

Marjorie the cow feels just plain ordinary. She wishes she could ride bicycles and do handstands like the other cows, so the cunning chickens hatch a plan to help her out. The next morning, there’s an almighty commotion in the barnyard; Marjorie has laid an egg. The other cows are convinced it’s a trick—until Marjorie’s egg cracks open and the newly hatched chick bellows  “Moo.” This is a great comic take on the Ugly Duckling tale, with double-page spreads in ink, watercolor, and pencil showing comical farm creatures and humans, who are every bit as ridiculous as the animals. The fun is in the details, especially the black Holstein-like patches on Marjorie’s egg. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman

Eggstraordinarily Silly!
By ReadItDiva
A cow that lays an egg? We picked this book up because of the silly title alone. The illustrations are a riot (like the page showing cows riding bicycles and doing handstands)! Somehow Marjorie the cow lays a egg, spotted mysteriously black & white just like a Holstein cow. The other cows are suspicious. The chickens ain't talkin'. The farmer hams it up in front of the news media. Sure, it's the Scam of the Century, but it's a great story about friends (The chickens) helping out a friend (Marjorie) when she was feeling low. And the ending, when the egg finally hatches, will "crack" you up!

A must for adoptive families! Funny and entertaining!
By Anolani
We just got brought this home from the library today. I picked it simply because of the colorful cover and I figured my 3 and 4 year old would find a cow laying an egg entertaining.

We read the story and got so much more. Here is the run down: the cow feels badly because she can't do some of the things the other cows can. The chickens notice her sadness and hatch a plot. She wakes up and has mysteriously laid an egg. The other cows get jealous and when the egg hatches they proclaim she didn't lay the egg and that a chicken has hatched. But the little chick says "MOOO."

The illustrations are hilarious and the story is touching. Having an adopted child- I reread the story with an emphasis on an adoption theme- pointing out the love the cow had for the egg, how she took it for walks and protected it. And that even though the cow did not grow her baby in her tummy the way other cows do (theres no mention of this in the story- its just something I added) she clearly loves her baby. And the baby knows her mama from the moment she hatches.

This is a great way tool to help younger children understand adoption. For both adoptive families and non-adoptive families.

I love this book so much I will be purchasing it in hardcover- and I felt compelled to write a review immediately!

The Red Leather Diary: Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal (P.S.), by Lily Koppel

For more than half a century, the red leather diary languished inside a steamer trunk. Rescued from a Dumpster on Manhattan's Upper West Side, it found its way to Lily Koppel, a young writer, who opened its tarnished brass lock and journeyed into an enthralling past. The diary painted a breathtaking portrait of a bygone New York—of glamorous nights at El Morocco and elegant teas at Schrafft's during the 1920s and '30s—and of the headstrong, endearing teenager who filled its pages with her hopes, heartaches, and vivid recollections. Intrigued, Koppel followed her only clue, a frontispiece inscription, to its now ninety-year-old owner, Florence Wolfson, and was enchanted as Florence, reunited with her diary, rediscovered a lost younger self burning with artistic fervor.

Joining intimate interviews with original diary entries, The Red Leather Diary re-creates the romance and promise of a remarkable era and brings to life the true story of a daring, precocious young dreamer.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist Koppel found the inspiration for this book, based on her 2006 New York Times article, after discovering Florence Wolfson’s diary in a Manhattan dumpster. Koppel eventually locates Florence in Florida and surprises the 90-year-old with this artifact from her past, which reveals her views on growing up as an intelligent, ambitious and creative teenager on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the 1930s. Florence received the diary as a present on her 14th birthday. She recorded everything from her first kiss (with a boy) to her crush on actress Eva Le Galliene (which led her to question her sexuality) to her passion for writing and art. The diary acts as a window into a fascinating and privileged world, one that Koppel tries to recreate by writing in a novelistic way, using no more than snippets of text from Florence’s diary and, we can presume, multiple interviews as support. The result, which some readers may find frustrating and others rewarding, is that the original inspiration—the diary itself—becomes no more than a starting point for a much larger story: that of Florence’s life.

From Booklist
In 2003, Koppel, a novice writer for the New York Times, stumbled upon an amazing discovery: the decades-old diary of a privileged teenaged Manhattanite penned between 1929 and 1934. Fascinated by entries detailing theater expeditions, shopping sprees, love interests, and grand ambitions, she put her journalistic skills to good use, tracking down the original owner of this faded and cracked red-leather treasure. Elated to discover 90-year-old Florence Wolfson alive, alert, and eager to share her memories of a bygone time and place, Koppel began interviewing Florence, interweaving the brief diary entries with more detailed personal anecdotes infused with the type of glamour and sophistication associated with a 1930s romantic comedy. After a front-page story appeared in the New York Times Sunday City section, interest in Florence’s fascinating story prompted the author to write a full-length book that works as both a biography and a spellbinding glimpse into a vanished era. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
“Skillful reporting, fine prose and [an] excellent eye for period detail. . . . A story about not one but two lovable characters—and the city that brought them together.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Florence’s life reads like E.L. Doctorow’s Ragtime in places, with all the famous paths crossed and situations experienced; while descriptions of city life recall Marjorie Hart’s Summer at Tiffany... Together, Koppel and Florence take readers through a world dizzy with new ideas, rhythms and inventions.” (BookPage)

“After a front-page story appeared in the New York Times Sunday City section, interest in Florence’s fascinating story prompted the author to write a full-length book that works as both a biography and a spellbinding glimpse into a vanished era.” (Booklist)

“Koppel’s love of New York is obvious in the details she draws from Florence’s diary, which show how the city has changed in ways both big and small. An entertaining and enjoyable work.” (Library Journal)

“In The Red Leather Diary, Lily Koppel finds an old journal in a Dumpster, gets lost in its rich take on 1930s New York and, improbably, tracks down the now-90-year-old woman whose life—real and imagined—fills its worn pages.” (Reader's Digest (Editors' Choice))

“New York Times writer Lily Koppel’s The Red Leather Diary melds three life-affirming subjects—Florence Wolfson’s journal of life in 1930s Manhattan, Koppel’s discovery of it in a Dumpster decades later, and the meeting of the two women—into one enchanting memoir.” (Elle)

“Sparked by a felicitous discovery in an Upper West Side dumpster, New York Times writer Lily Koppel spins an enthralling true fairy tale about a Depression-era ingénue.” (Vogue)

“A window into a fascinating and privileged world. . . . Rewarding.” (Publishers Weekly)

“THE RED LEATHER DIARY is a fascinating book—inventive and inspiring.” (Erica Jong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fear of Flying)

Disappointing
By Terry
The premise was interesting but the execution poor. There is much information but little life in the telling of Frances' story. Confoundedly uneven: for example, dwells at length on her superficial teenage lesbian affairs, but glosses over the details of the romance with the love of her life. No drama, no introspection, no examination of why or how things happened. Most annoying, however, was Lily Koppel's self-conscious intrusion into the story, reminding us repeatedly about her role in bringing the diary to the world's attention. As if telling the world that she's done so might give her some unearned gravitas, an understanding of what it all means, or at least fool the reader into overlooking her artless, simplistic style. Was especially annoyed with her attempts at impressing the reader with her glamorous-but-shallow writing assignments that had nothing to do with the story. Had a hard time getting through the whole book.

I'm mixed about this one...
By Ellis Bell
In 2003, a young journalist for the New York Times named Lily Koppel discovers the diary of Florence Wolfson, age 14, in a discarded steamer trunk on the Upper West Side. Investigation leads her to find out that Florence is still living. Upon visiting the 90-year-old, Florence tells Lily her story, of growing up in New York in the 192os and `30s. Florence grew up in an affluent Jewish family, and kept the diary for five years, from age 14 to 19. She was an active writer and artist. Florence attended a private girls' school and then Hunter College (then all women and now co-ed and part of the CUNY system), where she was active in the college literary magazine. Along the way she experimented with same-sex relationships and agonized over the behavior of boys, eventually marrying a childhood friend.

It seems like your typical coming-of-age story, except for the fact that Florence's is very much of the place and era she grew up in. Little facts about New York City are revealed: for example, for thirty years, there were little statues of Mercury mounted on top of all the stoplights in the city. That was one of the biggest draws of this book. Florence had a pretty average New York City childhood, all things considered; and adding in those little bits of arcane trivia really spiced things up for me.

There were a couple of problems I had with this book: first, Koppel spends an inordinate amount of time bragging about her accomplishments. The story is ultimately Florence's, and Lily talking about, say, a story she did once detracts from that. Koppel's prose seemed a little bit purpled and hackneyed; she also tries to make generalizations about the New York of today that ultimately don't ring true. Also, I thought the book would have been better if Florence had actually written it herself. She's a writer, so why not?

The Red Leather Diary
By Rebecca W. Vickery
What a wonderful and magical read. Lily Koppel has done an amazing job of bringing the reader into the story, "seeing" Florence's life and NY in the 1930's. Florence did not care for "watered down personalities" and no wonder as she is such a forceful character. Before reading this I never imagined the freedom a young New Yorker might have. This woman was so precocious and open minded. You find yourself wondering how her parents managed and at the same time wishing for some of her moxie. Most interesting!

Arab Approaches to Conflict Resolution: Mediation, Negotiation and Settlement of Political Disputes (Routledge Studies in Peace and Conflic

This book examines Arab approaches to mediation, negotiation and settlement of political disputes.

This book proposes that two clusters of independent variables are potentially responsible for the distinctive nature of Arab conflict resolution. Firstly, those linked with Arab political regimes and imperatives, and secondly those linked with Arab and /or Islamic culture. The text also focuses on the Arab League and its history of involvement in crisis and conflict situations, along with the roles of individual leaders, emissaries and extra-regional actors such as IGOs (Inter-Governmental Organisations) in undertaking mediation initiatives. IGO and Arab League activity has taken on new importance since the various intervention attempts in connection with the 'Arab Spring' since 2011.

During the negotiation process, most Arab regimes tend to view conflicts within a broad historical context and Islamic culture prioritises the cohesion of the community and internal stability of the state over individual autonomy. This has created an authoritarian style of leadership, and in practice, leaders in the Middle East have had near absolute authority in the decision-making process―a fact which will have a lot of weight in conflict management and whether peace will endure for a long period of time.

This book is unique in studying these clusters through comparative systematic case study analysis of events prior to and subsequent to the 'Arab Spring', augmented by a quantitative analysis of sample data on Arab disputes, compiled from a larger and newly augmented study comprising the years 1945-2000. Complementary data from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program’s (UCDP) data base of armed conflicts since 1975 is also utilized.

This book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, Middle Eastern politics and IR in general.

Mixed Bag
By Izzy
Most importantly,I applaud the attempt to write on this difficult subject as there is not much extant literature on Arab Conflict Resolution.
Pro: There are lots of good contrasts made between Arab approaches and Western approaches which helps to contextualize the difference for the Western read. Arabic conflict, cooperation, and cultural words and translated.
Cons: A bunch of the text is unorganized and repetitive, drawing on the same relatively few sources (although that is partially because of the lack of extant literature). Also the same, well-known examples of Arab-related conflict and are repeated throughout (constant reference to Jimmy Carter's mediation at Camp David) and there is not thorough treatment of the analysis of the examples. Moreover, recent examples related to the Arab Spring seem kind of "slapped on." The original, unique contribution to extant Arab conflict analysis and resolution is buried in the middle of the box and probably would have been more appropriate as a journal article vice a book.

Breakthrough in Theory and Practice
By Expressd'Orient
This is a scholarly work that I have assigned to my graduate students as essential in understanding the evolving and long standing conflicts in the Middle East. Based on the theories of internationally renowned authority in international relations and meditation, Dr. Jacob Bercovitch, the authors searched and analyzed various case studies with specific reference to the Arab World and the role of culture in political conflict and dispute resolution. This work, first of its kind, is a must for any graduate level program that deals with international relations and political disputes and mediation in the Arab World.

Review
He was a man who persistently stayed ahead of his time. As begetter of the science of management he towered above the imitators he spawned. Guardian PETER DRUCKER was a doyen of management theory whose influence spanned eight decades. Times

From the Back Cover
There are very few writers of whom one can say they invented an entire field of study: Peter F. Drucker is one. “Management” as a concept literally did not exist until Drucker’s groundbreaking work. From Jim Collins to Jack Welch, every great theorist and practitioner of management has walked in Drucker’s footsteps.

And in 1974, with MANAGEMENT, he published the book that would come to define the field. In this seminal work, Drucker explored how managers--in the for-profit and public service sectors alike--can perform effectively. Examining management cases with a global eye, Drucker laid out the essentials of performance, and of how a manager interacts with their organization and the social and cultural environment in which they operate. For three decades, managers and students of business worldwide have relied on Peter Drucker to prepare themselves to meet the challenges of an ever-changing business environment. The result is a book that--while still a fundamental work--has also slipped substantially behind the current business climate.

Now Joseph Maciariello, Professor of Management at Claremont University’s Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management and one of Drucker’s foremost students and protégés, has exhaustively revised and updated this book to meet the needs of the modern-day manager. Almost every page contains new and reworked material that reflects the thirty years of Drucker’s thinking and writing that postdated the original edition. Business examples that have now gone out of date have been reworked; commentary to explore and explain Drucker’s thinking and its applications has been added throughout. MANAGEMENT is ready at last to enter the twenty-first century and continue its reign as the must-read text for every serious student of the field.

About the Author

Peter F. Drucker is considered the most influential management thinker ever. The author of more than twenty-five books, his ideas have had an enormous impact on shaping the modern corporation. Drucker passed away in 2005.

Original 1974 edition vs. Revised 2008 "Maciariello" edition
By Dan
While writing a presentation for my boss and needed some reference, I came upon the 1974 edition of this book in my library. I found myself unable to stop reading all the precious words of wisdom Drucker has had to offer. It was a moment of "Aha! Eureka!" for me where the concepts that I knew intuitively were being articulated into words, direct, clear and easy to understand. It reads very much like a person talking to you, and Drucker probably wrote this book using material from a collection of speeches he once delivered to people hungry for his advice.

When I finally decided to purchased the book, I bought the revised edition, but unfortunately, I felt it lost much of the initial "Eureka!" effect. Consider the following quotations from the book:

1974 edition (The Purpose of a Business):
"It is the customer who determines what a business is. It is the customer alone whose willingness to pay for a good or for a service converts economic resources into wealth, things into goods. What the business thinks it produces is not of first importance - especially not to the future of the business and to its success. The typical engineering definition of quality is something that is hard to do, is complicated, and costs a lot of money! But that isn't quality; it's incompetence. What the customer thinks he is buying, what he considers value, is decisive - it determines what a business is, what it produces, and whether it will prosper. And what the customer buys and considers value is never a product. It is always utility, that is what a product or service does for him. And what is value for the customer is, as we shall (in Chapter 7), anything but obvious."

Revised 2008 edition (The Purpose of a Business):
"It is the customer who determines what a business is. It is the customer alone whose willingness to pay for a good or for a service converts economic resources into wealth, things into goods. And what the customer buys and considers value is never a product. It is always utility, that is what a product or service does for him."

Since I work in an industry closely related to engineering that involves churning out drawings after drawings, the additional explanation by Drucker's original 1974 edition, where defining "engineering quality" as "incompetence" was a shocker to me when I first read it. It got my attention to want to understand why as a Manager, Drucker thinks that a shift in the thinking of an engineer is needed in order to run a great business - a shift in thinking where the product (utility) is viewed from the end-user, rather than from the engineer's perspective. This is absent in the revised edition and subsequently the "Eureka!" effect is lost.

Consider another example:

1974 edition (Strategic Planning):
"We can now attempt to define what strategic thinking is. It is the continuous process of making present entrepreneurial (risk-taking) decisions systematically and with the greatest knowledge of their futurity; organizing systematically the efforts needed to carry out these decisions; and measuring the results of these decisions against the expectations through organized, systematic feedback."

Revised 2008 edition (Strategic Planning):
(The whole 1974 text is absent - the closest equivalent explanation is this passage) "Practically every basic management decision is a long-range decision - ten years is a rather short time span these days. Whether concerned with research or with building a new plant, designing a new marketing organization or a new product, every major management decision takes years before it is really effective. And it has to be productive for years thereafter to pay off the investment of people and money. Managers, therefore, need to be skilled in making decisions with long futurity on a systemic basis."

I find that Maciariello, despite being "one of Drucker's foremost students and protégés", took too much liberty in interpretation, rather than leaving Drucker's original words for the reader to interpret them according to their experiences (whether you are a manager with a marketing background or a manager from an engineering background, or sales). I also find that the revised edition is written with too much of an assumption that the reader is familiar with Drucker and skips through many of the very basic definitions and explanations (see example 2). However, I think it is the simplicity of the original 1974 edition that gives it its profound impact.
Buyer take note.

Much different from the original text by Drucker.
By mirobook
I was simply surprised at that transformation level of this edition. So many important paragraphs in Drucker's original text, for example the parts on communication, were discarded. The new summaries Maciariello added may be helpful but seem to fit less, are out of Drucker's style. I doubt whether the author of this book could be identified as Peter F. Drucker himself. Maciariello is surely a co-author of this version, and I think he changed much the tone and mood of the original book. Any way, this shortened version might be an effective introduction to reading original Drucker.

Goth girl Raven can never catch a break. Just when her and Alexander's relationship seems to be out of danger---think again. Alexander's parents, Cassandra and Constantine are the classic vampires. Cassandra is pale with the confidence of a queen and the attitude of a movie star, and Raven realizes that she's admiring her role model more than her own mother. Alexander's father, Constantine is the classic vampire all the way, dark with incredible eyes, with a cane and cape in tow.

All is well until they realize and fret over Raven suffering the same fate as Alexander's grandmother: alone in the world because of her love for vampires. They make to move back to Romania now that the feud with the Maxwells (Jagger, Luna, and their younger brother) is over! Who could bare to be seperated from their true love? No one, especially not our dark duo; so the pair create a devious plan to spread rumors so the mansion will go unsold. Which works.. until it doesn't.

Raven seems to grow mentally mature in this book than in the others. She and Becky see eye to eye about their boyfriends and their "not so close" friendship. And she also thinks about her future--not as a vampire but career and passions. She's able to see past Trevor's front and tells the truth of him to him, thus changing him (slightly) into a better (yea right) arch nemisous/stalker. (Seriously, read about the portait in his room and dare to tell me otherwise.)

Overall, Royal Blood is a good read if you liked the others. But I wish Jagger would come back into the story. Trevor's character is becoming less annoying and more sad. Pathetic sad, not tragic. And the "Naper Paper" I'm assuming is supposed to be a shortened, easier try at explaining the dreaded Senior Project. :P

Raven and her vampire boyfriend, Alexander, have had the perfect summer. With fall comes the beginning of school and the ending of their nights together.

The arrival of Alexander's parents makes things worse. While they're seen all over town, Alexander waits to introduce Raven to his parents, making her feel both neglected and hurt.

However, once they meet, she adores his parents and they seem to like her. Before long, Raven's family and Alexander's family start socializing - with Raven and Alexander on hand to make sure Raven's parents don't discover the truth.

But Alexander's parents didn't come to town to visit, they came to sell the mansion and take their son back to Europe with them. When the devastating news hits the couple, they vow to stop the sale.

ROYALD BLOOD continues with the romantic vampire saga of Raven and Alexander in a Gothic tale of love, loss, and friendship.

This volume discusses the aesthetic and cognitive challenges of modern picturebooks from different countries, such as Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and USA. The overarching issue concerns the mutual relationship between representation and narration by means of the picturebooks’ multimodal character. Moreover, this volume includes the main lines of debate and approaches to picturebooks by international leading researchers in the field. Topics covered are the impact of paratexts and interpictorial allusions, the relationship between artists’ books, crossover picturebooks, and picturebooks for adults, the narrative defiance of wordless picturebooks, the representation of emotions in images and text, and the depiction of hybrid characters in picturebooks. The enlargement of the picturebook corpus beyond an Anglo-American picturebook canon opens up new horizons and highlights the diverging styles and genre shifts in modern picturebooks. This tendency also demonstrates the influence of specific authors and illustrators on the appreciation of the picturebook genre, as in the case of Astrid Lindgren’s picturebooks and the picturebooks created by renowned illustrators, such as Anthony Browne, Wolf Erlbruch, Stian Hole, and Bruno Munari. This book will be the definite contribution to contemporary picturebook research for many years to come.

Power, Diversity and Public Relations (Routledge New Directions in Public Relations & Communication Research), by Lee Edwards

Power, Diversity and Public Relations addresses the lack of diversity in PR by revealing the ways in which power operates within the occupation to construct archetypal practitioner identities, occupational belonging and exclusion. It explores the ways in which the field is normatively constructed through discourse, and examines how the experiences of practitioners whose ethnicity and class differ from the ‘typical’ PR background, shape alternative understandings of the occupation and their place within it.

The book applies theoretical perspectives ranging from Bourdieuvian and occupational sociology to postcolonial and critical race theory, to a variety of empirical data from the UK PR industry. Diversity emerges as a product of the dialectics between occupational structures, norms and practitioners’ reactions to those constraints; it follows that improving diversity is best understood as an exercise in democracy, where all practitioner voices are heard, valued, and encompass the potential for change.

This insightful text will be essential reading for researchers and students in Public Relations, Communications, Media Studies, Promotional Industries, as well as all scholars interested in the sociology of race and work relations.

Review

'In this fascinating study, Edwards ventures far and wide, drawing on a sophisticated array of social and cultural theorists to critically dissect the PR profession. She thus pushes PR scholarship far beyond its comfort zone and into exciting and challenging new directions.' - Aeron Davis, Professor, Goldsmiths University of London, UK

'Lee Edwards makes a mark as a major sociologist of public relations with this stimulating and challenging book on diversity (or the lack of it) in the profession. Skilfully integrating theory and practice, she offers an incisive analysis of race, racism, and identity politics in a field where such issues are usually hidden away in the margins.' - Debashish Munshi, Professor, The University of Waikato, New Zealand

'Dr Edwards' book makes a series of important contributions and provides a cultural and institutional history of the development of public relations as an emblematic profession for our times. It engages in a sophisticated and personal way with leading gender, critical race and diversity theories, locating these debates in the contemporary reorganization of professional occupations, and of the political economy more broadly. And all of this is delivered through a clear and very compelling narrative.' - Daniel Muzio, Professor, Newcastle University, UK

Modernist Aesthetics and Consumer Culture in the Writings of Oscar Wilde, by Paul Fortunato

Oscar Wilde was a consumer modernist. His modernist aesthetics drove him into the heart of the mass culture industries of 1890s London, particularly the journalism and popular theatre industries.

Wilde was extremely active in these industries: as a journalist at the Pall Mall Gazette; as magazine editor of the Women’s World; as commentator on dress and design through both of these; and finally as a fabulously popular playwright.

Because of his desire to impact a mass audience, the primary elements of Wilde’s consumer aesthetic were superficial ornament and ephemeral public image – both of which he linked to the theatrical. This concern with the surface and with the ephemeral was, ironically, a foundational element of what became twentieth-century modernism – thus we can call Wilde’s aesthetic a consumer modernism, a root and branch of modernism that was largely erased.

Review

"This book portrays playwright Wilde as a consumer modernist, working in the very heart of 1890s London's mass-culture industry." -- Columbia College Today, March/April 2008

"...this excellent reinterpretation of Oscar Wilde’s aesthetic in relation to consumer and mass culture most definitely rejuvenates Wilde studies with a new trajectory of exploration not only for literary critics, but also for critics and researchers who study fashion, art and consumer culture from the purviews of economics, history, feminism, and sociology."

-- Rocky Mountain Review, Fall 2008

"I think that this book makes a good contribution to Wilde scholarship in general and is especially useful in examining Wilde's earlier writings."--English Literature in Transition, 2010
